Wasnt at the game but tense or what?! Following the updates was like murder! Mind you wouldnt be bristol if we did it straight forward! Anyone who was there care to shed any light? Did we play poorly or did pirates play well? I just hope its "first meaningful game" nerves!

just got back..
thought we looked tense tonight and to be honest they had a game plan and executed it well. Kept us on the back foot and kick to corners. aggresive (offside) defense and at times looked like they wanted it a bit more than us.We weren't quite dynamic enough of the back of rucks or mauls a bit like England! But perhaps the Jarvis moaners might shut up as he kicked all points he could. Hopefully we will improve because if we play like that away we will lose. Thought Spice was very poor tonight and should have come off sooner.
A win is a win tho

HappyH - from the PiratesTV coverage it seemed to me like they were living offside at almost every ruck and scrum. One of the commentators kept praising their kick-chase and the pressure they were putting on our backs, but the reality is that if they were behind the kicker or the back foot, they wouldn't have looked anywhere near as impressive as they did.

Fair play to AJ, kicked what he needed to, and didn't play badly with the poor ball that he was provided.

Happy H - AJs kicking between the posts may have been better but his decision making in play still leaves a lot to be desired.....

zzzzzz
let me guess bring back Jason?
he had little option most times with the defence in his face...bit like England with ponderous ball

kicking was better..he kicked all his points, found good touch from all his penalties

most of the ball kicked away was by spice

its been his decision making that has created most of our tries this season

no pleasing some people

Thought AJ had a god game tonight. Place kicks perfect.Ball from hand mostly very good.IMHO I thought that we ended up playing safety first rugby to secure the win. Nothing wrong with that IMHO.A bit to close for comfort in the last 5 mins but we came away with the win which is an improvement on last week.Rain and wind seemed to be in our faces first half and conditions changed in the second. Also thought that the referee was good and consistent tonight.First game down, job done.

i thought spice was poor tonight. shovelled a lot of poor balls to Jarvis who gets the stick for trying to sort out rubbish.

agree with the earlier post. the ref didn't police the off side which played into their hands. they closed down the midfield and stopped us playing.

cant believe he pinged DC twice in 5 minutes especially as the oppo prop shot backwards for the 2nd pen

I thought when we score the try that we looked like we were going to storm it, so fair play to CP. To be honest I cant say they ever actually looked like scoring a try, but I am stuck in the corner. Good job though, bit tense in the last five as they rumbled ever closer, and they could have sneaked.

Wouldnt say they are the strongest team out of the 8 in the playoffs so the Bedford game is looking more than interesting.

Good summaries of all of you. The Pirates definately had a game plan and it was flagged in advance on their forum.

Keep it tight
get in Spice's face
use the conditions
stop it going wide
nick a losing bonus point

job done well I'd say.

I'm not going to be hard on the boys, this was always going to be a hard series of games. It'll improve. We will be in a home semi final.

Looked to me like Pirates didnt look like winning the game unless a broken play breakaway or interception happened. We looked really dangerous at times getting the ball through some hands but agree we looked nervous.

Hopefully we can settle down and get back to how were playing before the plays offs (Moseley game aside!)

First may I congratulate Adrian Jarvis (after criticizing him last week) for giving us the victory last night. For with out his accurate place kicking the result may have been very different. lets hope he can keep last nights form up, for the rest of the season.

But as for the BIG PUSH, looked more of a nervous shove. But hopefully now we have the first win under our belt we can bring the confidence back, that we seemed not to have had last night.

As Lord Nelson said.

I accept that we did not play well last night, and they seemed at times to be faster, more innovative and almost wanting it more. But it must be difficult from Bristol's point of view in coping with a three quarter line which is consistently standing offside, and which the ref does nothing about. We know we are up against 3 good sides in the playoffs, and we have to come up with tactics capable of coping with other sides spoiling tactics. None of these sides can get promoted so all they are hoping for is to spoil our chances.

And the Pirates (Sm109) very nearly made a good job of doing this last night. Lets hope we can come up with some cunning plan to stop this happening again. eh Baldric (Sm23)
