Ok let's put the cat among the pigeons! Who's going to be the proud owner of the captain title this season? Is grieves still holding the honour or is it going to be passed to.......? Suggestions anyone?
Been thinking about this and I think I would stick with Mr Grieves. Always gives his all on the pitch, constantly putting his body on the line and that is the best example to give and the best way to lead.
Grieves all the way, he is a natural. We need a vice captain. look at what happened during the first leg of the semi final with the Cornish Pirates, We fell apart the last 20 or so with no clear leadership. We cannot afford for that to happen this season with the play offs being so tight.
Grieve for me also, but there needs to be something done to boost the sense of leadership within the rest of the squad, so that when IG goes off/isn't playing for whatever reason, we don't get the headless chicken approach of the semi final first leg - we looked completely directionless at that stage and the situation needed a leadership firgure to step up and grab the game by the scruff of the neck
In Hobbo, Sambu, Winters we have recent internationals with prem experience and (sadly) extensive knowledge of this league. Jarvis, Eves and Pennnycook from the prem, and Otto with recent international experience. Add the two Scots and if we're looking to Ian alone for leadership we have a problem!
a lovely bloke and he has done a good job in a whole as a captain.
However i now believe the time has come for a new captain. this is mainly due to the fact that i believe his game has suffered recently and he is not the player he was, i dont think he is even certain of a place in the back line now especially with the performances mamma has put in.
i'm not in any way doubting his ability but i believe the time has come to hand over the captaincy to someone with a little more experiance.
At times last season Bristol appeared to lack leadership on the pitch, especially when under pressure. That is not down to the captain alone, but there were occasions when Grieve needed to take control and, in my opinion, failed to do so.
I'd like to see a new captain. I think Grieve's game will improve too. Win/win.
Grieves' game has suffered while he's been captain and he needs a chance to get back to being the player he was.
There's also the fact that, more than once last season, he let his temper get the better of him and he started having a go at the ref or opposition players. It didn't happen often or blow up into full scale fights but it probably didn't help us any.
We need someone with a cool head in heated situations - and sadly Grieves doesn't fit in that respect.
Brizzer by adoption
The loud Scottish one on the Centenary (sunny) side.
For me the jury's still out on whether IG's game is adversely affected by the captaincy burden. More to the point, why hasn't the club management been able to develop demonstrable leadership qualities in other squad members? Apart from Ruki, that is.
Grievesy has done nothing wrong over the past couple of years and actually he has probably got better as time has gone on...the club is everything to him and I like that about having him as captain..although it does help having some 'unofficial' captains on the pitch with people like Roy etc.
