Red card yesterday for a late hit against Sale yesterday.
I remain convinced that he contributed significantly to our relegation last year by his cynical late tackle which caused Gav to miss half the season.
Time for a lengthy ban.

This is one of the better things about modern rugby.

Times past, cheap shot merchants like Marler were revered as hard men, and masters of the dark arts.

Nowadays, thankfully, these cretins are called out and punished

Shame, cos on form he is a good player.

Whilst I wholeheartedly agree about his "hit" on Gavin last season, overall he did us a huge favour as otherwise we would still have our earlier management in place.

In most ways we are in a far better position now than if we had just scraped through last year.

I still can't forgive him.

Irrespective of our management etc etc he ruined Gavin Hensons season as Gavin was playing really well. Marler backed off with his hands up when he got involved with Courtney Lawes the other night when Quins played Saints.

Agree and even if Pat was still brought in he'd not have had the chance to embed the new style due to the need to fight off relegation. We can see how long it's taken us to get to the level we are currently at (still not high enough for Prem probably) and that is with playing in the Championship. Long term I think this season will prove to be a key beneficial one for the club.

Nail on the head. Survival last season would have put us in a worse position 3-5 years down the line

"England prop Marler received a straight red for a dangerous clear-out of a ruck with more than 20 minutes remaining."

Harlequins director of rugby John Kingston:

"This is not an isolated punch, stamp or kick by Joe Marler. It's a clear-out that's not legal. He's taken somebody out without using his arm.

Marler can be a complete idiot and liability, but having seen it live and replayed I still don't think there was much wrong with his attempted charge down on Gav at HQ. If it had been are bad as so many on here seem to think he would have been sighted. Yes it was slightly late but he was already committed. The same and worst happens every match without any actions, including by our players, and in that case unfortunately the damage was caused by Gav's follow-through hitting Marler rather than being taken out bu Marler charging through him.

Our DOR contributed more.

Sure did and a nice pay off as well. As cockney w#nker would say in Viz Magazine 'a nice little earner'.

To me, Joe Marler is a bit of a Jason Hobson. Plays right on the edge, goes over the edge quite a lot! but always puts in a shift. Loved by his own, hated by everyone else.

Mark Regan to for that matter.

Supporting Bristol since... since... Oh, not enough fingers.

Having just watched it on the highlights Marler could not claim he was 'clearing out' on this occasion and I think he is on for a long ban.

The bloke is a thug, repeated offender. This one was terrible - hitting a guy facing the other way in the head.

I hope he gets several months, the game is tough enough without that behaviour.

Agree totally with above post , he’s an old fashioned thug who forgets what a ref is looking for and that there are many cameras catching his repeated indiscretions. Sort of thing was common place 20 years ago happening in almost every combination pitch on a Saturday afternoon. No place for it now - Kingston’s attitude appalls me - what’s the difference between him punching someone and a forearm. Should be banned for the rest of the season. He’s publiically transgressed so many times obvious he’s not going to learn- a talent at prop a liability to his team.

having seen this replayed several times on rugby tonight and I am a fan of Marler as he is a silly sod but makes me laugh at his antics, totally agree with Lol and Austin Healey ( for a change) it was yellow at worst, he never made contact with the head and now he faces a 6 week ban that will probably be very detrimental to Englands 6N plans although I think England will not be in contention this year. I agree Furnessman. I can’t stand Marler and if I was a ref I’d card him just for walking on the pitch. But it looked fairly innocuous to me. However, what about the intent? You can get red for that these days.

Re: Marler off again
Graham_U 12 January, 2018 11:07
Only saw it on the Ch5 highlights which is never great for details but whilst it looked a deliberate swinging forearm aimed at the body up the side of the ruck, it was difficult to see the contact with the head. Certainly a card but would need to see it better to see if it justified a red, but it really was so obvious and stupidly an illegal hit.

For me it typifies one of the many problems with the implementation of the laws that ignore what the refs were asked to do. Many years ago a safety clarification was introduced to the laws to stop players "hitting rucks" by saying they need to bind onto rucks and maul as first contact when they join it. But this has been totally ignored for many years.

Intersting that the guy he hit has also been banned for hitting Marler earlier. Is it possible that the one incident is linked with the other?

Standardprocedure 12 January, 2018 11:22
I agree with Graham re problems of law implementations. Too often the IRB/WR try to deal with or outlaw something by tweaking a different law. In the example Graham refers to, it would have been more efficient to simply introduce a new offence (call it "charging") rather than to change the requirements for the formation of a ruck/maul. Properly drafted, it would give a degree of transparency and certainty that the laws currently do not.

Re: Marler off again
Standardprocedure 12 January, 2018 11:28
Having seen the vid, I can't agree with Dayglo or Healy. Marler clearly makes contact with Ioane's head. I know rugby players aren't always the brightest of buttons, but surely they know the difference between a shoulder and a head!
