According to Carlos Spencer we have signed a certain Patrick Tuipulotu for next season

Where and when is he quoted as saying that?

Just had a quick look at the Steve Lansdown interview and he's asked how many more players are needed. The answer was that a lot is done already, but that's not to say we're done. It's not finished. Also comes out cautiously in favour of ring fencing given the amount of money he's put in! But still needs to be a way for ambitious teams to come through.

Tuipuloto would be a great signing. All Black lock nearly 6.6 tall and pretty meaty. Him and Vui backed up by Joyce and A N Other (maybe keep Holmes) would make us so much more competitive.

But what is Tainton saying? I replayed the Lansdown interview and you cant say for sure whether hes agreeing with Tainton.

We wouldn't be able to have Tuipulotu, Luatua and Morahan in the same match day squad because of the 2 foreign player limit.

That would depend on what his place of birth was.

He was born in Christchurch, New Zealand and let's not forget Piutau was also born in NZ. Not sure how it will all work?

One thing that Taints does confirm is that Luatua and C.Piatua are the marque signings. There was some wiggle room about recruitment for injury/pre-season, but unless he is separating announcement from already completed signing it doesn't sound like we've got anymore coming.

Another interesting point is that the players have agreed to cut short their summer break from 5 to 4 weeks to get back in early and take a break later in pre-season. With so many new faces we are going to need as long as possible, as the Lam way has only really started to look effective in the last couple of games, and there's a lot of new faces, and much tougher opposition to prepare for.

It would be interesting to see our current team play the team that had a similar record but lost out in those crazy 5 mins at Wuss. I would say that team was far stronger and more ready for the prem than the team last season.

Being favourites for relegation means that even without the handicap imposed by the play-offs we still have to pay a high price for those we can attract. Which means we push the salary cap for lower quality and smaller numbers. I'm concerned about the pack as it now stands. And the time an untried defence coach has to work in. Great to be promoted but worried we will just be straight back down without some more strengthening and a great deal of hard work in very short time.

We will, inevitably, be everyone's favourites for relegation and, maybe, some on here are playing the same game as the pundits?

What we need is for GrahamU's mantra (PL to justify his massive salary) by ensuring the team is greater than the sum of it's parts, much as Richard Hill did before the Newport/Mem fiasco.

We have the disarray at Northants (sorted?) Quins, Wuss and Barf in our favour and, who knows how well teams like Newcastle and Sale will start the season?

There are many examples of untried coaches succeeding and exceeding expectations around both international and 'club' sides (Borthwick, Baxter etc)

Like everyone else here I want us to succeed and, being an optimist by nature, I look to the positives we have:

Disarray elsewhere as above.
Pat Lam - a man with a vision and a stated target which he is capable of transferring to the other members of his team.
Some massively talented and proven players amongst some younger and intelligent ones.
Solid financial backing.
Terrific stadium and playing surface.
Fans who are second to none who will back them to the last.

So please don't write off our chances quite yet.

It's about passports not nationality. Piutau counts as Tongan same as his brother, Luatua hss Samoan heritage so only Afoa and Morahan foreign technically.

The following article confirms NZ players with Samoan heritage; John Afoa and Patrick Tuipulotu are included with the other names already mentioned.

If correct that makes Morahan are only non Bosman / Kopak foreigner.

That what I've said many times in the past HS, for me that is the measure of a coach. So far this season, with the exceptions of the last couple of matches, we have been a long way short of the sum or our parts. That was where Robbo fell short when he started to bring in bigger names, and the same could even said of Hilly when he got some money.

Although on a limited budget Hilly, Haagy and Hully did absolute wonders, even proved you don't need much of an attacking/backs plan if your defence and forwards are good enough. If PL and crew could managed to do what Hilly did with his bunch of journeymen and has-beens in the 2005 preseason then PL will be worth it.
