Crest v badge

Just found this on the bcfc forum. It might explain a few things
Just found out it is actually illegal for any football club,or any sports club and even schools,to use a coat of arms of a city, and there is an organisation called "The College of Arms" which can prosecute any one using the coat of arms even if it has permission to do so.Two years ago Airdrieonions were told to change there badge or face prosecution. There is a company called "MR B and Friends" which I believe designed the Bristol Sport logo, who flagged this up when Airdrieonions had to change to a new badge, warning several clubs that they may also have to change theirs. Fulham changed their badge from the coat of arms of Hammersmith and Fulham to it's current badge in 2001 because of problems with trademarking. So perhaps if we are to change our badge, this could be the reason rather than the city council.

If that's the case it would have saved the club a lot grief from a lot of us if they'd said that that was the reason for that particular change.

This has been discussed before and is why we had an interpretation of the crest.

We certainly canít use it to make money.

Obviously the case highlighted in the OP was in Scotland not England. I can't think of any threatened prosecution in England. And the reason the Airdrieonions one was a problem is because they had put the letters AFC in the crest, and you aren't supposed to have letters or words in a crest.

That's no real problem with using the city crest except you can't trademark it. This isn't a major part of the hideous rebrand but possibly has some influence on the club. Or perhaps not given the strangely unprofessional way they've gone about this.

I understand that neither Rugby nor City are the actual Bristol City crest. They are variations of it which are not banned, so I understand from the thread on OTIB.
