Chris Ashton - leaving Toulon

Chris Ashton looking to return the UK, Lam likes him, we have money free - Do we need him??

As a proven performer at the highest level I think he'd be a good addition for us.

I would take him here, he still has a couple of years left in him i believe, and a back 3 of Ashton, Morahan & C.Piutau is as good as it gets imho... Sign him up Pat

Toulon rumoured to be about to announce Julian Savea on a 2 year deal to replace Ashton. If so, that would either be quick work by Toulon or maybe Ashton asked for a move a while ago?

Mind you they are very used to having top internationals on the bench. Of course Habanna has left them so perhaps Savea is simply a swap for him.

Bringing Ashton here would be great. He'd prefer a team in the Heineken no doubt but I'm sure he won't need that to get back into the England squad.

Perhaps but we have to have some English players - and Ashton is big box-office.

Wouldn't say no to a couple of years of Ashton. Back three feels like one of the areas where we lack a bit of quality and depth.

I remember hearing PLs comments after the Baa Baa's match and wondering if he knows something about Ashton's future that the rest of us don't. So perhaps there's something in it.

Guessing Chiefs could be a possible destination, given their track record of revitalising careers. But not sure his personality would be the best fit with Baxter's ethos. Not sure who else in the Premiership would have the space or cash to bring him on board at this point?

Definitely yes from me. Outstanding finisher. Can't believe EJ doesn't want him for England, far better bet than Brown on the wing.
Let's hope we still have some gap in the salary cap!

And the reason he would want to come here is what exactly? He comes from Wigan, so Sale makes more sense. Plus if he wants to be back in England for WC selection then he needs to be playing for a club that is mid to top table, not one aiming to avoid relegation. The only reason to be here is if we offer him so much money that it is ridiculous. That's with our marquee slots apparently taken, so we'd have to fit him in to the cap somehow. I can think of positions to strengthen before looking at the wing. Yes, there's a box-office element to him but frankly I'd prefer Savea.

He won't be going anywhere in England for the money alone - as he'd get more in France.

As for Exeter and revitalising careers - yes they do but Ashton's career has been revitalised in Toulon already (if it needed it). If he'd be playing as well in the Prem this season as he did in the Top 14 then he'd have started last week in South Africa surely.

As I've said I personally don't think he needs top of table and Heineken Cup rugby to get into the England squad so he MIGHT consider us if he feels Pat will get the best out of him. I don't think he will come here mind

Ashton also needs to be guaranteed a starting spot. There are some quality wings in the AP. Sale have both Yarde and Solomna, neither of who will be happy with a bench spot. I suspect Ashton won't want to be playing 15, he doesn't stand a chance of getting the England 15 shirt.

Well Pat definitely liked him and I’m sure he found Pat a big positive so who knows.
Stranger things have happened!
We def need an extra winger imho

Apparently he's going nowhere.

Does that mean we can have Savea then?

I think the key wording in the statement is "to date" they haven't had a request.

Hardly closes the door, almost sounds like they're expecting his request to leave.

Yes IF he really wants to come to the Prem next season then I doubt he will request to leave until he has something very definite sorted over here. All that said what evidence is there to suggest he is looking to come back to the Prem next season? As far as I can see all we have is the following from one of many 'pop up' rugby sites - 'The England winger has reportedly told the French Top 14 club that he wants to leave, just a year into his three-year contract' - now you could not really be successfully sued for writing that (even if Ashton or Toulon could be bothered to pursue action) and so this has given RugbyPass lots of clicks and exposure (I'm assuming it originates from them). I'm in no way saying they did but they could easily make something like that up simply to get cheap exposure - much of the media do it all the time. Keeps us active during the close season mind

He has signed for Toulon.

Maybe that affect Ashton's thinking.
