New tackle law to be trialled in Championship Cup

The RFU has announced that a trial of a new law governing the height of tackles is to be held in the new Championship Cup competition for the 2018/19 season.

In collaboration with World Rugby, an amendment to Law 9.13 will operate in the new cup competition and alter the definition of a high tackle from above the line of the shoulders to above the armpit line.

So you have to wrap under the arms, any seat belt type tackles high or not will be punished. It's got to be a good thing for rugby, maybe more people slipping off runners which would be entertaining.

So what happens when there's a maul and arms inevitably get wrapped over shoulders?

What's stopping players bending over or down into contact to intentionally get a free penalty?

Can't see it working well at all myself. Any coach worth their salt will be training methods to milk pens.

Well some players run with low body height at the moment so not sure much difference. Will be good to see the difference. Is Championship Cup a new name for the league or the new cup competition? Will be hard to change your tackle technique just for cup games

Currently you could attack their shoulders, with new trial laws you cannot as it would be high. Very difficult situation when front-on.

Hard to think now but do they really attack shoulders now? Would mainly end up giving a penalty away with that small margin for error

But this is just for the replacement for the B&I. Plus the RFU's own data show that it is the tackler who is more vulnerable to injury not the tackled player so I'm not sure this will really tell us anything. They would do better by enforcing the current laws properly, particularly those about wearing padding.
