What exactly are they selling though, all the club's are owned by different people and if 5 or 6 off them decided they don't like the deal what's to stop them setting up there own league.

Certain types of shares were the things being sold, including the P(?) shares which Exeter first tried to pressure us into selling before going after Leeds and getting them for a few million IIRC.

The clubs themselves are not up for sale, except Worcester.

Luckily, as most probably know now, the Prem clubs have said no to this request to buy majority shareholding but looks like there are parties interested in a minority stake. Officially they are saying selling a majority of ownership is not theirbpreferred option (unanimous view as well (but reading between the lines it seems they've ruled it out unless things in the future ever got so desperate that they were forced to consider such offers.

So good news

So do the shares come with caveats that make the ex owner play in a league they don’t want to?

Last season it was quoted that there were two or three clubs up for sale including Worcester, LI and one more (who I can't remember).

There is very little available in the public domain on "P" Shares, the only bits I could find seemed to indicate that if a club was in the championship for longer than 2 seasons than they were expected to sell them when asked (who sets the price don't know and the other question I had was how long a club had to be in the premiership before they could put an offer in)

Sarries were probably the other club you're thinking of but it's a non-issue now and LI are in the championship. Of the premiership clubs only Worcester are actively up for sale.

There's quite a bit on the various types of premiership shares, I think the guardian(?) did a piece regarding the CVC bid and the shares within the past week or so if you want to search it.
