Kick off and restarts

Can anyone explain why we always kick long and give our backs no chance to compete for the ball? So easy for the opposition to gather the ball and clear their lines.

That is something I have thought of as well. Danny Cipriani's 2nd half kick-off and the successful chase led to a try and maybe kick started there turnaround against us.

I don’t think Mads even cared what was happening yesterday. Every punt, place kick and restart was miss-kicked. His brain wasn’t there.

I think the idea behind deep re-starts is that the opposition then have to gather it and kick it back to you.

The assumption being that the kick back will probably go out somewhere inside their half thus giving you an attacking line-out inside the opposition half without having to do a great deal.

I wouldn't say our re-starts have had a great deal of baring on our results this season though!

If that was the theory at Saints 2nd half game it was a fail ,they happily adopted a counter running strategy from my memory that had us scrambling to defend back in our half.

I couldn't disagree more with this statement.

He didn't have his best game, but that is one heck of an accusation towards one of our more senior players, and a player who has embraced his off-field role as much as anyone in the squad.

Every time we kicked off against Worcester we kicked long (both Madigan and Sheedy) and every time they were able to comfortably field the ball, hit up a ruck and then clear to touch, usually back in our half.
Compare that to other teams who hang the kick up shorter enabling their backs to compete and often win back possession.
We have some fast backs, let's use them

Lets be honest we have never been good at kickoff’a and the length we get from penalties is a joke , kickoff should come down covered in snow and penalties should get aleast 20 meters.
