Sale and Sale Sharks - not very parochial!

Recalling some great Sale and Sale Sharks teams since I started watching in the 50's we've had players from all over the world and from every major Rugby Union playing country and some minor ones.

Obviously the home countries, Eire, France, Italy, Romania, Spain, Argentina, USA, Canada, SA, NZ, Oz, Tonga, Fiji, Samoa, Cook Islands.

Any advance on these with a Zimbabwean or a Namibian?

Good spot with SLM.

Briggs was born in Germany although was that forces Germany (technically the UK) or German germany?

I've a feeling one or more of the Saffers must have been a Zimbabwean and someone from the IOM would be good as well.

Who was the Romanian and who was the Cook Islander, only been following Sale since about 1997, so only remember all the journeyman SH players like Jannerman Brand, Craig Turvey etc from back then

Wasn't Bondi a Cook Islander?

..er... no he wasn't and apologies. He was born on Duke of York Island Papua New Guinea.

So strike out Cook Islands and insert Papua New Guinea and Czecho.

I remember the Romanian - he was a lock but I can't quite remember the name; I'm sure it began with M . it would be late 80's early 90's. I bet Dave Baldwin would know if anybody sees him around.

I don't recall a Rumanian - I think it was Machacek a No 8/lock you were thinking about.

I'm beginning to doubt myself now - the problem is that match reports from that era aren't digitized and so don't turn up on Google.

Ok - look about 1985 - 1990. Iirc he came before the Revolution. No doubt the welsh in charge after 1990 got rid of him out of embarrassment at losing to Romania.

Christian Raducanu. His Sale F.C.league stats are as follows:-

League appearances - 7 (all starting apps.) In Courage League Div. 2 1991-92 season
Debut. - 04/01/1992 versus Plymouth Albion (Away)
Final app. - 25/04/1992 versus Coventry (Away)

Will try and think of a few more.

Thanks for that iBozz. Christian Raducanu - that was him. Apologies for the wild goose chase with the letter "M", and the dates. At least I got the country and position correct.

He did a lot for Sedgeley Park.

Here's a bit of info about him from 1999:-

'Christian Raducanu could write a book - and not just about his experiences on the rugby field.

Sedgley Park's Rumanian skipper defected after a game against Scotland during the Ceaucescu regime back in 1989.

He was in good company. World famous gymnast Nadia Comenec did a runner at the same time.

Ironically, four months later the revolution in Rumania happened, Ceaucescu was ousted and the oppressive Communist reign, stretching back to the Second World War was over.

But 31-year-old Raducanu, a second row forward with Leeds and Sale before joining Sedgley last season, had seen the world with Rumania and it opened up new horizons for him.

"I had been brought up under the Communist regime in Rumania. I was only a young lad of 20 when I defected. Things happened so quickly afterwards. If I had known about the changes that were going to occur maybe I would have stayed, but it was just a matter of getting on with life," says Raducanu.

"After defecting I found new friends and established new horizons. I was fortunate enough to have travelled since being a teenager, thanks to rugby. "I first came to England when I was 14. Since then I have also been to places such as New Zealand and Hong Kong to name but two."

Raducanu, an imposing figure on and off the pitch, is "hewn from stone, a marvellous physique". That is the way Sedgley chairman Dave Smith describes him. He was the youngest player at 17 to play in the (1987) World Cup.'

Emerging - we've had players born in both Eire & NI - I included NI in the shorthand "Home Countries".

To answer Mrs Ts ignored question, our Canuck was Prop John Thiel. Underrated at Sale I felt.
