The atmosphere

I'll admit I am not the most regular visitor to EP and a few of the times I've been recently the atmosphere can get a little stale. But it was great last night - I quite enjoyed Martin Toal too, nice touch. Lots of singing and shouting, and the odd touch of panto-esque jeering.

Lots of people defend it and lots of people moan about it - is it still etiquette for silence during kicks? Is booing wrong?

is booing kicks wrong? I think this is something we all need to discuss, I don't think it's been mentioned enough.

In Wasp's case NO, they really were the pantomime villains solely due to the devious prior actions and attitude of their head coach/garden gnome, Sean Edwards.

IMHO it was essential the Wasps players were reminded of that fact all match, in that it would be unacceptable for them to profit by even a single point from this replay.

I distinctly got the impression that unsurprisingly the Wasps players hearts and souls were not 100% in the game as reflected in the performance and apologies given by one or two of their players for their actions on their last abortive visit.

However I also think normal service should now be resumed.
Both their players and supporters were pretty blameless with only a few misguided one-eyed souls seeking to defend the indefensible.

Oldham - forgive me for enticing a discussion on a discussion board, but please re-read the post. I never asked about booing during kicks. They were 2 separate questions....

Wasps fans have mentioned the booing/reception a lot on the board and was wondering what the consensus was.

As far as the booing was concerned, fully justified don't have a problem with it. We needed to put Pizzagate and Frostiesgate behind us us and I suspect it has now been well and truly expunged from our psyche (Sm100)

I always keep quiet for kickers... except last night!

The crowd was superb and the booing - was appropriate for "this" game - after all - WASPS directly cost each one of us who attended the "no game on" night - a fair amount of cash ... and it was a way of showing our feelings about that decision.

Back to normality now - so SHHHHHHHHH for them kickers!!

Like most people I’m one for keeping quiet when the opposition is kicking, however last night that rule went out the window due to Wasps shenanigans back in November.

However I suggest we all move on now and put Pizzagate to bed, we got the result we deserved.

It d*mn well should be and I think this is where EP management let themselves, and us, down. they should remind supporters of the etiquette over the PA.

Except in truly exceptional circumstances, such as last night when serial cry-off-baby refusniks are visiting, yes.

Bunch of hypocrites then, quite frankly.

The postponement is no fault of the players, just the coaching staff. By all means boo the kicker, it really doesn't matter, but to pick and choose and try and justify seems a little childish to me.

Personally, I couldn't bring myself to boo - not even for the pizza eating shandy monkeys.

There's no doubt though that the pantomime villain thing contributed to the atmosphere - can't remember noise like that at EP for a long time. Look forward to a time when the whole ground is united and making noise for our own reasons.

Clutch if you are unable to discern that the circumstances surrounding the Wasps postponed game were extraordinary in the extreme, then you really are a complete numbskull.

Leave it out SHOUTING - Mr Tickle IS my real name...

And for the record, I don't have any issue with the crowd getting stuck into the jessies the other night - I just chose not to do so myself. I'm pretty sure there's nothing in my post that says it did bother me either, so no need to be paranoid.

I agree but feel the need to point out that this is mentioned in the match day programme.

Fair point, Mike, but audio would be better than visual in this case I feel.

I don't buy the programme any more, but when I did I read it at home after the game so, with a memory like mine, I'd forgotten everything in it by the following game.

And who reads small print (if small print it be)?

My concern is that if we all sit here and justify booing Wasps then we'll soon be justifing booing something else and before we know it'll be a common and unwanted feature.

(Must admit followed the pantomime booing until my girlfriend pointed out the above to me)

I think it's hard to create and atmosphere at a Rugby game in this day and age when you're being told how you have to behave every 5 seconds on a message board. No noise during kicks as if it's a well known tradition, when in fact in my mind it's just Munster and Northampton who are well famous for that. No swearing, even though most people at a game will probably mutter bloody or f-in hell to themselves quietly if a player misses an easy chance. Then there's people comparing it to Football hooliganism if there's anything but a chant of SAY-ULL.

So I just generally sit on my own and swear quietly all night at how rubbish we are usually.

imho noise at any time during the game is not a problem, it only becomes a problem when it turns abusive. I know for fact that Charlie dislikes total silence during kicks and prefers a noisy background. Having just recently been to a Super 14 match with 50,000 people, noise during kicks is commonplace in the S Hemisphere and adds to the ocassion..

Re: The atmosphere

Exactly. The players don't really care if there is booing, and if they do, then that is an issue they need to address. I don't boo kickers, as I'm not 8 years old, but I don't have a problem with it. I may boo the occasional player, or a refs decision, should it be warranted. I booed Sale once, as well.

Personally, most things in life you either believe in, or do not. Whatever the circumstances, I don't understand how people can switch on and off the booing is fine switch. It is something people on this board feel strongly about, starting various threads. A bit of cheating from the Wasps management isn't sufficient to temporally change ones mind, over something they believe in (allegedly) quite strongly.

It's perfectly simple clutch. It's not black and white it's just context.
"when in Rome..."
Consequently one tries to speak french in france, one doesn't go around bare-armed or bare-legged in some Moslem countries, one covers one's head in Greek churches, one doesn't show anyone the soles of one's feet in Thailand, one remains silent during kicks at Thomond Park, etc, etc...

Its about not causing offense when in someone else's house....

EP however is more complex and ambiguous, some do silence when we're winning, or easily losing, noisy if we feel aggrieved, if the ref has made a mistake or if it's down to the last kick of the match and we're facing a crucial loss......
i.e there is no real concensus but everyone has their own individual sense of what is right and they follow that...winking smiley
