Sale v Northampton on-line commentaries 2012 02 18 @ 1500

Are you all sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin ...

Audio 1: BBC Radio Manchester

Audio 2: BBC Radio Northampton iPlayer - you'll need Flash enabled.

Audio 3: BBC Radio Northampton Console - could well be the same as Audio 2 source above, if one doesn't work then try the other.

Audio 4: BBC Radio Northampton Listen Live. Click the Listen button towards the top right of the page.

They broadcast on air on 103.6FM and 104.2FM and indications are that they are covering the game "live", but whether that is a full commentary or merely commentary interspersed with local Mozzerball games I know not. Their schedule reports: 14:00–17:00 Northamptonshire Sport 18/02/2012 Crawley v Northampton Town, Barrow v Kettering Town and Northampton Saints v Sale Sharks.

SKY Sports TV do not appear to be covering the game - unless Gogglebox Olyy knows different - so I can only cite the following potential video links for your delectation ...

Video 1: http://www8.livetv.ru. This currently leads to a blank page.

Video 2: http://www.vipbox.tv/sports/rugby.html. The game isn't listed in their schedule.

Video 3: wiziwig.tv. The game doesn't appear to be listed.

Text based services may, or of course may not, be available as follows - no-one tells me whether they work or not so I have no idea if listing them wastes your and my time. i guess they are little used when there is alternative video or audio available ...

Tweet 1: @salesharksMEN - Neil Leigh. Manchester Evening News.

Tweet 2: @salesharksrugby - Sale Sharks Official feed.

Tweet 3: @MickTheMove - Mick Collins.

Tweet 4: @Roger_Bowen - Roger Bowen.

And now into Security Hell:

Facebook 1: Sale Sharks official Facebook

The Iffy is also alleged to post updates but, from what I've heard off-board, these are now retrospective summaries rather then the live updates we had last term. I'm happy to be corrected, so here goes anyway ...

The Iffy 1: Stephen Thomas may be posting website updates,

The Iffy 2: John Everton may do full minute by minute updates or merely the half and full time summaries.

No matter what you say, or how you say it, someone somewhere will deliberately go out of their way to be offended.

In loving memory of Her Ladyship - d: 29/12/2007.

You don't know what you've got 'till it's gone. RiP

Saints penalty at the scrum, sounds like they're attacking well in our 22m from the pen.....but we turn over and Frank clears.

Have to say, whoever this commentator is is obscenely one eyed.
I expect them to favour their side a little bit, but Sale can do no right in this game in his eyes
"OH THATS A PENALTY" "OH THATS HANDLING IN THE RUCK SURELY" "OH THAT SHOULD BE A YELLOW"
Shut up and talk about the bloody game.

Peel seems to have picked up a knock, staying on but they're saying he's in some pain.

We had a scrum on their 22m but they won it against the head, but then knocked on - scrum again.

Saints back in front from a Myler penalty:
6 - 3

Saints on top in the scrum and in the driving maul, we're doing well in the loose though, or so it sounds.

If we can come out firing in the second half, like we often do, then hopefully we can grab an early try and go from there.

I don't like the aerial ping pong, however Saints seem to be struggling with it so it may be the best option.

Myler with another penalty to take it 9 - 3.

they cant scor tries right now, but we just keep gifting their in form kicker pots at goal.

Late lineout on our 22 and we go long and lose it. FFS, who's calling that @#$%& (gaskell presumably?). Go to your most reliable call and just get the ball and get it clear.

Penalty right on the death to get the losing BP.....he get's it

Thankfully we get something from the match, but can't help but feel we could've won that if we cut out the 13,000 penalties.

Still, a losing BP away at Saints is a decent enough result, and better than coming away with nothing.

Says something about our defence, and their attack, when we spend a quarter of the game a man down, and they don't really look like crossing the tryline.

also says something about our lack of intellect.

Stay patient, stay at 15 men, trust the defence and dont let them kick us out of it.

1 point is, on paper, ok, but it feels like 4 was in our grasp if we were bright enough to see it.

Not sure about stay at 15 men!!! Perhaps we should just play 14 from now on.

Did we "win" 11-3 when at 14?

Not too bad a result though there is no reason why we cannot beat anyone on the day.

1 point helps us to pull away from Irish though wins for Exeter and Gloucester are bad news.

I knew it would be very tight and very happy with 4 points. Certainly didn't expect a 5 pointer. We certainly didn't look like scoring many tries as your defense was so good (so was ours for most of the match!) Foden injects so much pace in our counter attack that without him we struggle to create things.I suppose we should thank you for that too although we have had some input into his development.
You will be a real force next season and should be top 4 (u still could be this season) Good luck for the rest of it.

But we dont do we? we too often throw games away with careless play and indiscipline. v frustrating.

The guys are trying to set HC standards. Well HC standards demand that this type of game is won narrowly with gritty defence and strong discipline and the odd try, not lost via a barrage of penalties. We are close but no cigar.

We all know that sometimes a commentary can be very biased, first hand viewing often gives a better perspective. The team played well against a strong saints forwards performance and a very one eyed ref. A Bp under the circumstances (14 men for 60 mins) was a good return.MW's comments are simply not accurate.

Couldn't really see what Sherri did for his yellow from my seat so won't comment. Sam's was a high tackle so merited-however he put in a lot of big tackles throughout the match so in my opinion he can be excused one mistimed challenge. Yes there were too many penalties and we didn't really click 1st half despite a lot of possession but the 2nd half was good. Our defence was superb throughout against a side which tried to spread the ball and we scored a good try. ALl in all a merited point away from home against a side who has realistic ambitions to win the title.

14 men for 20mins, surely?

The commentary said Ted killed the ball in the ruck, and seeing as it was in our half and they were on the attack then a yellow is the right way to go - professional foul and all that.
Probably saved us the BP, to be honest, as if they'd have gotten a try rather than the 3pointer that would've been a big mountain to climb.

Plus we got the try with him in the bin (Sm105)

Is it a good spoiling by Sale, dirty tricks or a failure on the part of Northampton to exploit a major advantage in the scrums?

Reads of sour grapes that some of the more arrogant Saints fans may be experiencing, to be honest.
They expected to smash us and didn't, and are now angry about that.

"falsely impersonating a rugby team" despite us playing more rugby than Saints wanted to (Sm105)

It's a shame, really. I've always though Saints had some of the best fans going, however they're going the way of Tigers fans now, in that Saints NEVER lose, or put in a bad performance - it's always the other team cheating, or the ref is against them. This obviously isn't all Saints fans (or all Tigers fans), but it's not nice to see.

We scored more points against them than any team that they have beaten since the first game of the season.

Over the two games we have not only beaten them 5 points to 4, but four tries to NIL.

I wouldn't worry about the MINORITY of their supporters being upset.

Sounds to me like we did what away teams are meant to do- scrap for everything and give them nothing, qualities sadly lacking in Sale teams of previous seasons, especially away from home. I take the remark about a 'side created in Diamond's image' as a rather backhanded compliment.

Not the best game I have ever seen. You battled for every inch. There was nothing left but on the pitch. Your scrum was mullered through out but rarely did you lose possession.

Well done - but glad ther are not too many games like that, It wasn't pretty to watch.

Best of luck for the rest of the season.

Just got back.

One of the most frustrating games I've ever watched. Sale beat Sale today. Not Northampton. Northampton never once came close to scoring a try. If we had basic skills and discipline that could have been a very comfortable win. With 10 minutes until half time we had the upper hand. Then out of nowhere it's 12-3 and it looks like it's a comfortable lead. Every time we had ball in hand it looked like we could have created something but instead we just booted it for no reason. Even with 5 minutes to go and no bonus point at that time, we booted it. In the times we kept hold of the ball Northampton barely threatened and we were making a lot of yards. Come the last minute and the penalty going over it sort of felt like a win as I was expecting nothing at that point. But that Northampton team were there to be beaten today and beaten well. Not many teams go to Franklins Gardens and don't concede a try.

Would have taken a bonus point before the game. But today all the Premier games were close, so a LBP given the weather and hindsight was do able. A shame we can't close out games like this and get 4 points instead of the welcome one. But at least Sale are heading in the right direction and 5 points of one of the pre season favourites to win the Premier is a good return.

Hope my points are deemed acceptable, with my not being there !

I understand your view but apart from the try you didn't actually threaten that much either but you are also right neither did we. I don't want to get into a slanging match over what was a very disappointing game for both sides and certainly for any neutral that had the misfortune to come along.

Saints did nothing today, but then they didn't have to. They simply had to defend and wait for us to cough the ball up (which we did with unerring regularity) and then go through a few phases until the ref stuck his arm out. 3 points and then repeat again and again and again. This pattern was only interupted when we booted the ball away and once when we scored an excellent try after manging to hold on to the ball

Defence was very good. No doubt about the commitment and desire but our poor execution, ball retention and basic skills are killing us a the moment

That was 3 points lost today

always hoped for 9 or 10 pts from Wuss,Saints & Pests. We have got 5 so far & there is no reason why we cant get 5pts next week as pests are sliding towards div 2. We do need to win at Exeter if we want HC rugby next season. As places 4-7 are now looking like being between Tiggers, Exeter, Glaws & us. And we also have tricky away fixtures at Glaws and Budgies, not to mention Quins last game...

OK, wasn't at the game, but outscoring them on tries but losing courtesy of seven kicked penalties tells its own story. There are clearly things we need to work on. But looking at the bigger picture - we took a losing bonus point away from Franklins Gardens. And Welford Road. And the Madjeski. These are all teams that hammered us with 4-try bonus points last season. So whilst we aren't the finished article, let's be honest... we're still definitely heading in the right direction. Negative rugby today, maybe, but still very positive in the grand scheme of things.

Not disputing that its much better than the last few seasons. But it could be even better if we could just cut down on the ridiculously high error count

Onwards and upwards. Looking forward to Wasps and further improvement

Amazing how two sets of supporters see things differently. Over on their forum they're talking about us like we were Worcester last week. As the Saints fan said above - I don't want to get into petty arguing. But it does seem like sour grapes. How dare a team come to Franklins Gardens and not allow them to get pasted? I was thinking Saints had more of a game plan with kicking at goal so often, the drop goal etc. Sure, they made sense with the margin. But I don't recall them playing much open Rugby. When they did they knocked on or we put in some big tackles. Superb defensive effort today.

Completely agree with JMoon - also went to the game and Sale defended really well to restrict Northampton, who didn't really offer a great deal. However as soon as opportunities presented themselves there were fumbles, missed line-outs, pointless hoofing and poor decision-making. The last 10 of the first half were crucial and when we had a chance to settle things down we had players isolated and also fly-hacked from the left touchline back to Northampton in midfield leading to their final penalty of the half. However bonus point was good and great effort from the lads - more composure in key areas and it would have been a very different story

I agree J Moon. Recently when we've had penalties, we've kicked to the corner and put pressure on the opponents line. For some reason today, we were happy to take the points on offer and not even look for any more than the 3 points that were being coughed up on a regular basis.

Bit harsh PAB that you think you should get 10 points against Saints every season, but I can't argue that you beat us this season 5 to 4.

It was a hugely disappointing game where for some reason the Saints didn't want to put your try line under any pressure. Congrats on the combined results this season against us.

I think you misunderstood him: He doesn't want 9/10 points from Saints (though that'd be nice tongue sticking out smiley), he wants 9/10 points from the Worcester, Saints and Wasps games combined - We already have 5 (4 from Worcester, 1 from Saints) so a win/BP win would get us our (PAB's) target.

If we get a bonus point win against a poor Wasps side next week and you get nothing at Irish-which is quite feasible, we'd only be 1 point behind you... bearing in mind where we've come from last season who's worried!!!

Bull Shark, Hardly a shock in the season with the World Cup and six nations combined. As a club, we know our limitations. We struggle without our top 6 (ish) players, and s a result are only in third place at the moment... Both sides were woeful yesterday, Saint didn't score a try and Sale did. But apart from the single try, neither side looked like scoring another. The conditions dictated the style of play, it was inevitable. Congratulations on beating us 5 points to 4, just consider the fact you havn't played us at full strength once. I commend you on your recent improvements, as know all about poor form at Saints, and the feeling of being relagated.

It seems the arrogent ones seem to be on these boards, don't get too big for your boots just yet, your performance yesterday was nothing special, scoring one try does not amount to "running rugby". Good luck for the rest of the season, would be great to see you in the playoffs!

Excuse me but have I missed something here? Dis not yesterdays match yet again reflect the same problems of Sales games latterly? Poor discipline, mullah'ed in the scrum and a lack of basic ball handling skills? Or were we just unlucky and poor refereeing again??????.........................

I think you're putting words in to everyones mouths there....
Think everyone agrees that our discipline was shocking and cost us the game (remove all penalties and we won 5 - 3)

Agreed. 7 kicked penalties tells its own story. As I said before though, I'm very happy that we're going to places like Franklins Gardens, Welford Road and the Madjeski and picking up LBPs as opposed to conceding TBPs. I don't think any realistic fans expected us to be the finished article this season, but results like this show that, whilst there is still some major issues to get sorted (which I think we all agree on), we are definitely heading in the right direction.

Lot of negativity about lack of discipline, yes we conceded seven kickable penalties most for offside or in at the side, based on the massive superiority at scrum time that saints had ( forget Hartley as Haywood is a big impressive unit, and Dowson would have made no additional impact at scrum time),I'm relieved we didn't give more away.
I'm not going to blame the ref, but offside at the breakdown,in midfield and entering the ruck at the side are fine margins and will always benefit a vociferous home crowd.I didn't see us infringing more than we do at EP, but we were under more pressure.
The referee is bound to be swayed by home advantage (Henry yellow at Tigers, last min pen at Irish).
Sherri's card was a poor call, the ball was 35 yards out (hardly red zone),and I don't recall a collective warning.
The offense itself didn't warrant a yellow (clumsy play at best).
This is not to say we can't improve discipline (Sam was not a premeditated hit but an instinctive lazy arm on a winger stepping inside),but we need to understand that this was for most of the match a well structured determined defensive effort against a more powerful pack.
Hopefully by now the saints fans will recognise that whilst Myler is a kicking machine his general game management, kicking options and distribution (as with the rest of the backs)was very poor for this level of rugby.

Call we old fashioned but rugby is about winning - not style points

Everytime Saints threatened - Sale conceeded a penalty - so Myler (at 85%+) kicked it (how many times do teams ever actually score kicking for the corner) which in my book made sense

The loss of Dickson, Foden and Ashton (plus John Clark injured) is hurting the backline - up front, despite being down 3 players to Eng we can match anyone as we are now picking from a pack of ~14 top class players whereas last season it was closer to 9

So that yellow was without warning? Were we infringing a lot, prior to that? If a team keeps giving away penalties then it doesn't have to be in red zone. Did look a harsh call plus Saints should have been carded for the offside after the Leota break, but it would be hypocritical to complain, as Saints were harshly down to 13 men at our place, which cost them a victory they would have more than likely achieved otherwise.

Don't understand why people are downplaying the BP. I wasn't at the game, and I am happy to concede that we were disappointing. At the end of the day the basic errors and lack of set piece is the reason why we are going to finish mid table, rather than pushing for the play offs. Everyone knows that, and I'm sure Diamond is doing his best to correct it. If we have the same problems next year, then the moaning would be justified.

I'd have taken e BP loss under PSA in the same situation!

You guys should be bigging up you team. They worked ferociously hard on Saturday. I tend to agree it was a lazy arm on a winger cutting back in rather than a ore premeditated swinging arm but it was still a bad high tackle and rightly a yellow. He may not get anything in addition to it (ie not cited).

Agree Haywood is a hell of a talent for a 20 year old. He is a big unit but also mobile and makes crunching tackles.

Nice our scrum is more robust when last years first choices are not around.

Good luck for the rest of the season.

Not many teams go to Franklins Gardens and don't concede a try.

(I think) Worcester on 1st January 2007 were the last visitors not to concede at try at Franklin's Gardens (in any competition).

The full England side, I'm not so sure, but I expect a number of our younger guys to make the Saxons, and then who knows from there?
Guys like Henry, Jamma, Miller are all on the radar, and then it's only a matter of time until Brady is too.
Myall and Seymour are also involved in and around the Saxons too.
