Just to keep the thread going over the summer a little story about Burch. I was at a Sale dinner at Old Trafford CC some years ago (can't remember the year but someone may).
Burch was sat beside me at our table. After a great evening, one when Andy Morris spilt a whole tray of drinks down his suit, I got home and discovered that I had picked up the wrong suit jacket. Getting out of the taxi with a mate who was staying with me that night, I searched in the jacket pocket for my house keys, as I say, wrong Jacket. My wife was away for the weekend up in the north east and of course we now had a problem as the house was alarmed. It's now about 2.30am. The only option was break the kitchen window with a brick and after some difficulty the alarm went off, but we were in the house. One of the neighbours must have phoned the police and they duly turned 10 minutes later. I'm standing at the front door in a dinner suit trying to explain why I have broken into my own house.
The next morning I rang Mr Jackman and of course he had picked up my jacket and I had his.
He thought it was hilarious... I drove over to his house later that morning to pick it up and drop his off and we had a coffee and a great laugh.
I've got quite a few pics from that drunken evening....

The quote is incorrect ...

Quote:
He will work with ex-Newport and Wales fly-half Paul Turner.

... should, of course, read ...

Quote:
He will work with ex-Newport and Wales fly-half and Sale legend Paul Turner.

For those who are unaware of Paul Turner's time at Sale, it is undeniably true that neither Sale FC nor Sale Sharks would be in the positions that they are today without his inspirational time with us at Heywood Road.

Indeed, it is highly probable that Sale Sharks would not even exist without his time as player/coach at Sale FC. He could (how can I put this delicately?) be a tad on the "mercurial" side and tact was not always at the top of his list of strategies and he didn't always see eye to eye with the more senior members of the Club, but he certainly knew how to play!

Paul turned round the somewhat faltering fortunes of Sale FC to get both Sales where they are now,

+1

He was playing when I first started watching Sale at 12 years old, and I'm sure he's the reason I've always preferred a random creative 10 to a solid one you can rely on for pens...

My particular favourite move of his was when he'd use his knee to dink the ball over the opposition defence! 22 drop outs were always a complete lottery. Could you imagine commentators today discussing his exit strategy!? smiling smiley

lets not forget his protege, mr Jos Baxendell, who carried on the no look pass/shin kick techniques into the professional era.

Are you sure about that Crutch? I'm sure he had retired before 2005, but I might be wrong. I'm sure iBozz will know.

I think you must have mis-read something there emerging. Crutch said when he was 12 years old, not 12 years ago. Turner (of the Paul variety) was long gone by 2005, we'd had several seasons of Sir Charles of Hodgson by then.

I've had a recheck of the history and think I was actually 13, so not quite been watching Sale for 2/3 of my life yet...

To confirm this was early 90s as Sale got promoted to the top division and Paul Turner was at the end of his career. Think we had Simon Mannix after that?

Mannix joined as 'club accountant' part way through the 1996/97 season I think. Turner had gone to Bedford by then.
