I seem to see the first 30s or so and that's it. Ah well, guess I'll have to engage with the family instead 🙁

From what I saw I think Strauss is going to be massive for us this season. One or two glimpses of his carrying game. Overall typically scrappy pre season encounter

A friendly and no idea about the comparative strength of the teams put out, but that's got to be a morale booster away in France.

Strauss looked good picking up at 8 and making yards. Some good opportunistic tries from the backs but defence out wide didn't look great.

It's a bit of a concern that Tarus limped off the field and that Aulika wasn't fit enough to play.
Seems that the th cupboard is almost bare before the season starts,,,,

Bravo, Tiggs, a final score post! (Sm152)

You must be one of the very few on here who thinks that giving the score is important but, for we who cannot often listen or follow games live, it is essential!

The reported team for Castres.

Composition d'équipe du Castres Olympique
Equipe 1ère mi-temps : Dumora ; Batlle, Combezou, Ebersohn, Jaminet ; (o) Urdapilleta, (m) Kockott (cap) ; Delaporte, Vaipulu, Babillot ; Jacquet, Samson ; Montes, Firmin, Tichit.

Equipe 2ème mi-temps : Dumora ; Paris, Taumoepeau, Vialelle, Smith ; (o) Urdapilleta, (m) Radosavljevic ; Jelonch, Tulou (cap), Caballero; Jacquet, Bias ; Tussac, Rallier, Lazar.

Remplaçants : Kotze, Lassalle, Domenech, Le Bourhis, Caminati.

Their match report is fairly matter of fact. Suggests that they were the more dominant team but were unable to make it count.

Like us, they lad a few decent players missing (david Smith, Steve Mafi amongst others), but theres no reason to think they didnt put out their best team or effort.

If there's any truth in that it suggests we must have defended well

on the surface, a comfortable points margin away from home against last years 5th placed top 14 team is a superb result.

The scoreline looks like it flatters us as we did not have the lions share of posession or territory. At least 3 of our tries were interceptions/runaway efforts rather than constructed team scores, but we scored them all the same.

The case for our defence is well made though, and we turned defence into attack for several scores. I hear we lost quite a few lineouts, which is a concern but easily put right on the training field. I have no worries that we dont have good lineout options, just a pair of relatively new hookers.

If we didnt have much ball its hard to rate the attack, but again it seems we put some good phases together despite the lack of ball, which is encouraging.

One of the reasons that Castres played most of the rugby was that we frequently kicked possession away.

By contrast they rarely kicked but ran back at us....

Perhaps we are looking to play in that way, as discussed on here a while back, Sarries kick more than most and pick when they look to attack ball in hand very well, smothering the opposition well when they have it and using turnover ball in particular

I thought dimes had said at the public BBQ events that we were aiming to run the ball A LOT more this year?

It's not kicking the ball away - more likely to give away a pen during aimless possession through holding on.
Better to put the pressure on the opposition in their own half than try to find gaps 60m out. You, of course, have to ensure that you put that pressure on and pick your moments when to compete for the ball.

I would imagine that away from home against strong opposition there'll still be plenty of kicking. What I'm hoping to see is a reduction of kicking when there's a clear counter-attacking opportunity, and where we're at home against weaker teams and should try to keep more possession.

Also may well be a difference in approach with Faf and JoC compared to Cliff and AJ.

Spot on. We signed Faf and O Connor because they can play it as they see it. They won't be kicking the ball away. Plus, Diamond has said before that we have ignored the game plan and kicked away more often than we should. Finally, kicking is perfectly fine, as long as it is decent, and not done automatically, ignoring overlaps as a result.

hilly07, refs tend to be more lenient on not releasing at the moment. Plus, we'll have a Curry on the pitch all the time, so we'll be fine!

They strike me as the kind of lads who are good at everything, so perhaps they can help England's batting line up. Maybe give Stoneman a chance first!
