In the Brian Leigh Lancashire Trophy

Burnage 39
Blackburn 27

The boys from Varley Park were pretty rusty as this was their first competitive match of the new season. However, despite a fabulous comeback by Blackburn we managed to progress in our defence of the trophy.

Unfortunately I was unable to attend and unable to comment further. Despite the fact that VoL's hospitality is excellent I suspect it felt like a long trip home.

Burnage 2's drew with Fylde 3's
I watched this one but it was robbed of any real meaning by Fylde turning up without any front row players, so uncontested scrums from the kick-off. Unfortunately they also thought it was OK to bring their own booze (in cans). They were never going to spend more than a few quid each, but it grates against the ethos of the game in my humble opinion.

Heaton Moor 3's lost to Burnage 3's

Caldy 1sts and 2nds both won. By a quirk of modern fixture organisation, both were at home against Fylde. Bill Beaumont didn't have a great weekend.
Caldy 35-17 Fylde
and in the 2nd team game Caldy 25-17 Fylde.

Caldy lost the first game of the season, but are up and running and sitting about mid table in National 1.

Although SFC clearly were the better side on the day, Sheffield Tigers never gave up. However, it was a game where, for 70 minutes, SFC played to win.

The other 10 minutes were spent trying to prove that they should all play for SS as we excelled, at the start of the second half, in convincingly trying to throw away a fairish half-time lead (26 - 3)!

Sale FC 52 - 15 Sheffield Tigers

All in all, an excellent afternoon's entertainment.

Next week we Entertain Sheffield. Yes, the same(ish) name but a different team.

Defying SS's frequent example in often snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, SFC today snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

An appalling passage of play by SFC throughout much of the first half, error strewn and at times jaw dropping and definitely uncharacteristic, saw us trailing at half time by 3 - 17 to Sheffield.

A revitalised and much more impressive second half performance saw us run out winners.

Sale FC 31 - 17 Sheffield.

Note that the opposition were Sheffield, and not Sheffield Tigers as bizarrely stated on the team sheet. We played Tigers last weekend! Perhaps our poor first half performance was because we were confused buy our guests seeming to be wearing the wrong shirts!

Or maybe we just weren't savvy enough.

More significantly Caldy are at home to Plymouth Albion and their star number 10 next week on either a 15:00 or 14:00 kickoff.

There will be a lot of people somewhat annoyed at Caldy next week when they turn up at the wrong time. One web article (Caldy - club news 28/09/2017) informs us that the kick off has been changed to 2pm but everywhere else, including the poster at the entrance gate to the ground, is still saying 3pm.

Caldy 17-34 Plymouth

Caldy were second best to Plymouth Albion. Early on it looked as though Plymouth would post a high score, but Caldy came back to lead (briefly) 17-12. Then Plymouth scored a try to level but should have taken the lead when, what seemed a fairly easy kick, hit the upright. Another far more difficult kick, later on, was struck clean between the posts. In the end Plymouth, always the better side, won by 17.

In spite of being down to 14 men following a Sin Binning (a deliberate knock-on, I can't really argue with Sir on that one), SFC maintained their pressure and ran out deserved winners.

Blustery conditions with occasional rain were not ideal playing weather but it wasn't as bad as were conditions elsewhere, it seems.

Caldy nearly had an away win at Rosslyn Park in National 1, but the BBC had the scores wrong. It has now been corrected to a 36-32 defeat, but the Beeb have not credited Caldy with getting two bonus points. The table on NCA rugby has added those two bonus points.

NCA an BBC are at variance in about half the totals published in their tables, so which team really has what, I wouldn't really know.....and don't tell me to go the RFU results and table, because they have got things wrong in the past (and ? present) too.

Try the NCA site here Dave [www.ncarugby.com]

I'd trust them above the other two and particularly above the BBC site which is consistently wrong.
