Yep, even made an appearance for us off the bench in the penultimate game of last season. He studies/d at Durham University, so perhaps it was the proximity of Falcons that drew him away from us.

Just as I started watching Newcastle strolled through a non existent sale defence to score the softest of tries from a 5m lineout. Shocking defence ( or lack of)

No idea of the score

I was at KP for the first half & not really like an A League game tonight, too many of our senior players on the pitch so the game is more structured, less of the more exuberant stuff that you normally get from these games. Nothing deliberate, we just have more senior players needing a run out than usual. Second half should be more like it.

It will still do the youngsters on both sides a lot of good. We have been on the receiving end of games like this, our juniors against a field full of internationals. It happens.

We don't have a big enough squad to not play kids. Would you rather the jets team was winning every week cause it was full of internationals. The jets were successful under PSA I recall but he had no interest in developing younger players.

MartWhit give the youngsters a chance for goodness sake. They will learn a lot playing against experienced players and will get better. Encouraging them will benefit them and you can watch them as they progress and have the satisfaction of saying you backed them

I don't see that getting mullered every game teaches them anything but the opposition are better, stronger, fitter, more skilful, and better coached.

I don't blame the youngsters as the older players weren't any better either.

Just realised how few players we really do have. 41 in the senior and Jets squad compared to 60 in Newcastle's senior and snr academy according to the Aviva Prem Rugby site.

Explains the mis-matches that we see

We have a a very young set of Jets players, I gathered as much watching the first two Jets games at H.R. and if they come up against players much older and with that more experience then there will be only one outcome.
I guess these things can go in cycles, these young Jets players will in time develop and then they may be the ones handing out a thrashing to an inexperienced side.

Yes we do have a very small squad, too small if the truth be told. There's a lot of good work going on at the Falcons, D.R. is obviously building something there. I was talking to a lad on holiday who has an association with one of the junior sides with the Falcons, apparently they have an academy relationship with the rugby league side in the area too.

Only saw a few bits of the first half, thought Sale showed more in attack than defence but couldn't quite get over the line, but what determination by Pearce to chase back about 40 m to bring Sowery down and help win a scrum when it looked like a certain try,.

With only a small squad it is always going to be difficult to put two teams of 23 out in a week when you've only got 30 odd to choose from. But as long as the effort is there you've got to give them some credit. Well done lads.

These games are all about developing young players. We usually have a policy of mainly younger players with some older & experienced players to bring them along. That works a treat and as a bonus is usually very entertaining too, as the younger players are not constrained by systems and structures, they play more naturally and with a bit of flair.

Certainly in the first quarter your team did well, and you could argue they played the better rugby, camping in our 22 on several occasions. Some may mock, men against boys & all that, but they will have learned a lot more than they ever could on the training pitch, and surely that has to be a good thing.

The young lads will learn in every circumstance.

However, I fail to believe they learn better in a losing environment than a successful one. We dont throw our kids in the pool to teach them to swim. We simply need to have a more solid and experienced setup to allow the talented youngsters to progress at speed.

From a logical point of view the Jets being outmatched on a regular basis can't have that detrimental effect on their development otherwise we wouldn't have seen so many of them progress into the first team?!

Thanks, MartWhit. I often wonder why SS always seem to be so utterly disinterested in the Jets? Information is always very sketchy, almost as if they think that no-one is or should be interested. (Sm20)

is that our exceptionally successful 1st team? The one studded with internationals?

The jets haven't always been poor, but after the substantial slimming down of the broader squad last year, this years team are very much reliant on academy players who clearly arent quite ready for the jump in standard and physicality.

FUrther question:
What do you think the morale in Carrington is like today?
The 1st XV is under huge pressure for a result on the weekend, and the 2nd team has been soundly beaten in all 3 games. Not exactly putting any options into Steve Diamond's head. Losing is a bad habit and it gets you down, regardless of how resilient you may be.

I'm pretty sure if you go back and look at the results for the Jets for the last 2 seasons the first team finished 6th then they wouldn't be very good and a number of Jets have progressed in since then.

Asking how many internationals is a bit daft if you ask me, you can't expect the academy to produce a team of internationals, however it can produce a few (which it has done) and a number of solid first team players to supplement international recruits.

Clearly I would like more strength / numbers in the academy and I'm sure it would boost morale to have more wins, but on the particular point of wins and development I don't think the correlation you're looking for is supported by what has come out of academy.
