Translation:

We were rubbish last week, but no selection changes required

We've had to strip training back to basics

I've finally realised experienced and vocal players make better leaders.

In a less facetious note. Tough break for Will Addison. Hope he heals soon. We certainly need his magic. I think its a big step forward that the group will be led in the forseeable by Jono Ross. Less sure about Faf, but as a vice Captain I think he'll lead by example with the right kind of energy and determination. In all honestly, Dimes has few selection options beyond this core group in any case at the moment.

A relatively error free performance will see us beat Gloucs, but thats not exactly a given right now.....

Where is TJ?

Will be interesting to see where O Connor comes on. I guess that depends on the score and how the backs perform!

When Dimes said back to basics, I dint think he meant that far!!!!

But seriously, its a nice initiative, although I feel Leota with his top off on an exercise bike carried it off marginally better.

If volume of posts on this thread are a guide, I'd be concerned that excitement levels are waning regardless of O'Connor's selection. I'm not sure a big crowd will be rocking up.

Doesn't help that when on the SS homepage, the bottom banner, whilst promoting the Gloucester match, offers up a link for season tickets not a match ticket. Two games into the season is a bit late to be offering season tickets guys!

Sorry Mart, bit busy at work today... smiling smiley

Clearly delighted to see JoC on the bench. I can see why he's not gone straight in and agree it'll be interesting where he comes on, but have assume it's most likely at 10 if no other injury issues.

I thought Aulika may start this time but Tarus has done well so not a major issue.

With no TJ or Pearce on the bench might we see Ostrikov on for Strauss and Josh to 8?

Have to assume TJ has a knock otherwise can't see why he's missing.

Does the statement on Will's jaw mean his hamstring is ok, and any idea how long he could be out for?

The most interesting point for me about the squad picked for to play Gloucester is the inclusion of Cameron Neild, who by name position in the replacements is down to play flanker as oppose to hooker as Marc Jones is included on the bench as well. So should we assume from this that C.N. will be more favoured in the back row from now on unless our two other hookers are injured?

The team is about as strong as it can be. Pleased to see McGuigan starting, J.C. not even featuring on the bench.
Such a shame about 'Will i ever get some good luck' he deserves better and how unlucky to be out of the team for not the injury that he pulled up with a couple of weeks ago but another injury.
Not surprised that O'Connor is not starting but really looking forward to seeing him at some point.

Nott went off at h-t in the Jets mullering at Ice Station Zebra. TJ is obviously not fit. So Neild is covering 6.

Selection can't be so difficult these days - select 23 from about 26.

Very much looking forward to seeing JOC make his debut,
Really happy to see Byron back in the side too.

Maybe ioane is a victim of not being EQP?
AJ, Faf, Ross, Strauss, Taurus, Ostrikov, Evans, JOC all bring our average down.
He's also had a number of reasonably serious injuries over the past couple of seasons so could equally be resting/not risking a niggle. Will be good to see Neild back in the back row.

It certainly is a consistent policy this season of a 6-2 split on the bench. I'm uncomfortable with that. It betrays a lack of flexibility in the backs if the starting XV is not gelling.
I would also prefer a ball carrying option as a back row replacement and neither Curry nor Neild provide that, whereas Pearce can.
Looking forward to JOC run out.

Iirc Neilds stats for metres made are usually pretty impressive

Don't know the stats, but my perception is that Neild generally does pretty well as a carrier, perhaps more pace and an eye for a good line than weight and power. Last week Ben Curry probably made more yards off the bench than the rest managed from the start, I realise that may well be damning with faint praise, and that it was the other twin, but have you spotted a difference between them yet?

That said I was hoping to see more of Pearce this year, I never had as low an opinion of his performances as many appeared to, but at the end of last season he impressed with the limited opportunities he got. He seems to have fallen a long way from favour this year.

We seem to have a history of bringing in big ball carrying 8's and then not playing them...

That's why I wondered about Josh to 8 when subs come on as its more likely Strauss will come off than Ross (which also makes Neild on the bench an odd choice).

Pre-season I thought our back row looked very strong to allow proper rotation, but if Pearce isn't going to play, and TJ is confined to the bench, then I'll have to revise my opinion.

Also, has is 36's defence? He's not the biggest 12, but I imagine it's got to be better than Luke McLean's so interesting to see if Jennings still looks impressive.

I fancy Jenning will continue to fare well. He's using his head and his strength this season.

I agree with others on the back row. I guess Pearce will get an extended run during the AI's, unless Strauss falls off Scotlands radar.

6-2 split is all wrong. Reduces options in the backs criminally.

What options in the backs?

Leota, Addison, Paolo injured.

Unselected players are John, Nott, Ioane, Pearce, Seymour - all forwards.

Charnley; younger James( good enough for a cameo last week) , are two options although I agree our choices are very limited.

Neild's carries were always good and as such made him one of my favourite players. Will be interesting to see how the back row works if he comes on.

Looking forward to watching Trinder in their team, he's been getting some good reviews of late.

I've always thought Nield was an effective carrier as well both in ability to get over the gainline and volume, more through good technique and decision making than outrageous physical attributes

agree with Keg. And Dimes clearly keen to keep him in the squad.

I think having Charnley in at least provides a prime finisher. But with Addison & Leota injured, it is true , options out back are limited.

What we do have at least is versatility amongst the 9 backs selected

I think our midfield combo is the best we have (even on the rare occasions Addison is fit) - JOC is interesting, with all the constant "he will play 10" it does make you wonder if it's in his contract. I quite like AJ at 10, I think he has the potential and a bit more time with settled centres and if the forwards ever get fast ball then I think he's fine. If it's JOC then we still get a quality 10 but seems a bit of a waste for the investment in AJ over the past season.

Would be good to see JOC make his debut at 15 especially as Haley's performances haven't been stellar and I think he needs some competition in that spot.

My memories of everytime we play Gloucs is that we should beat them - then Greg Laidlaw used to kick us to death so with him not playing hopefully we'll do the basics well, be strong up front and if our backs get any decent ball they will get points.

I watched a few highlights from the Sarries game. I was a bit disappointing in our defensive organisation for their tries. Leaving the ruck unguarded for one, the worse was Beaumount getting up and going via the wing past the Beard/Denny to take up a position several metres behind his own try line and directly behind the ruck only for the ball to go to the winger who had no opposition as Beaumont had left it vacant resulting in lots of looks between the Beard/Denny and Josh......just absolute basics of managing the defensive line and communication plus seeing where the gaps are. Aulika completely fell for Farrell's dummy and to be honest he looks out of breath getting off the subs bench. I thought Will managed the pack nicely, box kicked well and did alright. Faf is obviously quality and Bryon just always does well for us. Ross looks like a natural leader though was a touch disappointed with his carries (i.e. he doesn't really go anywhere)

Id prefer Byron to be competing with Haley for 15 as we need JoC to be involved as much as possible and therefore at 10 - look at the difference Faf has made immediately.

Everything the club has said relates to JoC playing 10 and IMO that's our weakest link in the current backs selection so makes perfect sense. My only doubt for this game is that as a sub there will be injuries to take into account for where he could come on.

I'm glad that most of us on here are excited to see JoC play, but I'm also fully expecting that no matter how much our attacking play MAY improve with him in the pitch, the first time he misses a kick there'll be grumbles about him playing instead of AJ. There's just too much of a mindset amongst English rugby fans that a 10 is there to kick penalties and little else.

Denny scores after a minute with a chip that just avoids the the touchline to bounce into his arms and then flirts with the dead ball line to touch down under the posts.
