Most satisfactory. This team has talent, but still bountiful with naive penalties and inviting pressure. Still, at least the defensive lineout is back to its stealing best. Been quiet so far this season.

Half time 22 - 3

We look good ball in hand, but have lived off scraps.

Glaws playing a lot like Sale, plenty of opportunities, but inaccurate in our 22, their lineout is almost as much of a shambles as ours a few weeks ago.

We gave Denny the ball in first minute, he scored. I took us 30 minutes to pass to him again

Very odd game so far. Probably deserve to be behind on balance of play. Glos doing an imitation of Sale, plenty of endeavour and quite a lot of invention then do something stupid and concede a try...

Defence has been very solid within the 22, we look worryingly like the drift won't get there but 36 coming inside a lot.

Doyle is giving us nothing at the breakdown, 3 or 4 times we should have had a pen for Glos not releasing on the floor and nothing given. Having said that quite surprised we didn't get a yellow for the sequence of pens in the corner.

Re: v Glaws
29 September, 2017 20:49
correct on Doyle. When Evans won the last Glaws lineout after the last Strauss pen and warning he was played in the air but no pen.

Incredible scoreline, seldom seen a side refuse to score more often than Sale, but Glaws were dreadful in our 22. We must have made close to 200 tackles. I reckon we only blew one proper chance.

Great result, a better side, or even Glaws playing more like the side that beat Exeter, would probably have beaten us, still work to do up front. Looks like injuries likely to see the backs pick themselves, but should be selection headaches when more are fit, all looked good tonight.

Shocked. Not that Gloucester are rubbish, because they are truly the crumbles flakiest chocolate. But how clinical we are. We have talent and the attacki g game is in good order. Defensive lineout back to last seasons form too.

Just imagine how good we'll be if we can avoid the pens and defensive breakdowns which mean we dont control possession and territory effectively.

Superb effort tonight though, in a must win game. Hope some of the injuries turn out to be not as serious as feared.

I reckon 2 of those against Strauss, one tackling lifter, another in at the side, both given by TJ were unjust. Doyle spoke about mitigating circumstances for several of the pens which probably delayed his yellow card warning.

Mart - apart from a couple of early breaks the defense was exceptional and half the pens were for not rolling away where I thought we should have had decisions - Doyle didn't allow any competition over the ball. The ionly defensive worry was again on the rolling maul which clearly needs to be worked on.

Glos threw the ball around nicely at times but our defence created their desperation on some passes that led to the intercepts.

Sam James went clear a number of times from 12, perhaps due for the extra space when they were down a man. JoC looked class, nice pass, pace and solid in defence, with Will missing until Christmas we may see him more in the centre. Any word on if Jennings was injured? Early to bring him off otherwise.

Injury to Curry no2 looked bad, assume out for at least a couple of months. Injury to curry no1 hopefully not too bad as he made at least a couple of tackles after the initial injury.

Defence above all is tye biggest plus. These try fests happen. To restrict them to a last minute consolation try and a pen is fan effing tastic.

He's just said on twitter that it was illness, which (while, obviously bad for him) is good news going forwards.

The match stats:-

Glaws had 67% territory. 8 clean breaks 21 defenders beaten - nly had to make 85 tackles and lost 57 - 10

Most points Glaws have ever shipped in the Premiership. Sale's biggest win since 2004.

2004. WOw. Is that pre PSA. I forgot. Was it against Worcester? I recall us hammering them under PSA?

Am I right in thinking from the same set of fixtures last year (Swapping Brizz and L.Irish around) we had only managed 5 points in total?

0 v Gloucester, Wasps, Saracens
1 v Bristol
4 v Falcons.

This season:
0 v Saracens
1 v Wasps, Newcastle
5 v Irish and Gloucester.

Big improvement.

No it was under PSA and yes it was v Wuss at EP.

Remember it well. Weirdly, like tonight I arrived late for that game as well. Could be a lucky omen. Though I recall a game at Heywood road against Pienar Sarries when I arrived 30 mins and about 30 points late!!!!

Interesting so far.

We've been fairly handily beaten by Sarries & Wasps, 2 team who will compete for top 4 this season. We also played dismally against the seasons surprise package, current leaders Falcons.

Yet we've thrashed Irish and Gloucs, 2 sides who loook set to struggle. Glaws absolutely capitulated tonight.

We havent really tested ourselves yet against any of the mass of midfield contenders. Will be interesting when we do.

A 1pt loss to Falcons isn't looking too shabby at the moment, tbh

Epic performance, a massive congratulations to everyone in the squad.

There were some really cracking individual performances as well, particularly A.J. who had a great game. Faf was impervious tonight, I so like the quick ball phase after phase. Byron is in such a rich vein of form right now, that's 5 tries in two games. Wonderful opening try by D.S. he nearly ran it out of play in trying to make it behind the posts! to be fair everyone had a great game though, no one put a thing wrong all night.

What impressed me most was how clinical we were, completely ruthless at times and punished Gloucester for their sloppy play. It wasn't all about going forward either, we had a long spell in the 1st half where we were defending well and although lucky to not concede a yellow card we didn't panic and kept them out. Overall the defense aspect of our game was for me just as good as the tries.

I hope such a great win hasn't cost us too much with injuries. Webber went off half-way through the 1st half, difficult to see why. Someone mentioned Jennings was just illness but the Curry lad 1 hobbled off and Curry lad 2 looked to be in real pain holding his arm in a shirt-sling. A.J. also came off and Faf had to re-appear. That's the only sour note of an otherwise fantastic night.

Congrats to Newcastle too, top of the league (for now)

Theres no denying both sides were poor in Sale vs Falcons. But signs are it was a blip for both.

Faf impervious eh? No wonder his skin and hair condition is so good.

OMG (Sm60)

One of those nights where all the training pays off and everything just clicks

Built on awesome defence in the first half. felt like we only had the ball for about 5 mins but in truth, for all of Gloucs possession they never really looked like breaking us down. In the very short periods we had the ball we were razor sharp, and too quick for them. Bit of a bizarre feeling at HT. Defending for the vast majority, but well ahead on the scoreboard

More ball in the 2nd half but still majority for Gloucs and same outcome. No real threat from them and we forced them into errors and were clinical with pace, confidence and good handling. How nice is it to be able to say that! Clearly positive things to say about the whole side but I will say that I thought AJ really looked the part tonight.

Poor Gloucs fan next to us looked pretty miserable...bit like I usually do!

Best display for years. Hope is hasn't taken too big a toll in injuries

Thanks Olyy for the Jennings update.

Agreed based purely on Newcastle's results the 1pt doesn't look so bad, but that's a win we absolutely threw away - they offered nothing against us and if our lineout was even half functioning we'd have won fairly easily.

Mart - surely Glos are one of the midfield contenders too? They won't be scrapping it out with Wuss and Irish I'm sure.

Hopefully this gives us great confidence going into the Quins away game, that's the kind of result we need to be closer to 5/6 than 9/10.

not sure Crutch. Maybe. They are clearly just as flakey as ever. I guess they'll win enough at home to avoid the relegations scrap, but they seem pretty limited. They try to put a new side toether each year, and like us in years past, it doesnt work. Evolution is the name of the game not revolution.

Great result and an entertaining match too
JOC looked eager to impress
Team seemed well drilled
Injuries are a concern with a small squad already
JP Doyle was entertaining on reflink
Coffee from Dave Seymour's van was good (way better than the stadium's stuff)
Official attendance up to 5123
Walked from Eccles Tram Stop (35 mins) and overtook the 67 bus
Part of the new bypass was in use - will be interesting how it works when the bridge is actually open (When we first moved to AJB, there was a footpath under dual carriageway)

Is it a stretch to credit the some of tonights resilience and ruthlessness to Jono Ross captaincy?

I cant help but think having a captain in the thick of it and making as many tackles as he does, has an impact on the workrate of those around him.

That's a good question

Lobbe jnr had that effect as a captain and was an inspiration. Jono has a long way to match him but that's not a bad start

its an impossible question to quantify, but It feels like the right thing.

Today our basics were much improved, and the rest fell in behind. I feel our early problems stem from limited communication and thinking ahead of ourselves. I simply can't see either issue taking root under a forward of the type and personality of Ross.
