what are Cips drivers at this point?

Does he have something to prove?
Something of a pull to Sale?
Does he have an aversion to France/French food/ French ladies (delete as pappropriate)?

If not, its a purely financial call, so Dimes will have to have his Coutts chequebook out to beat the offers from France

The guy who got banned for revealing the Yarde signing tweeted a while back that we’d offered Danny a 4 year deal. Now that length of contract on decent money must be worth considering?? Plus we are a different club in terms of financial clout than the one he left.

Him and Faf at 9 and 10 = more heart in mouth stuff

Come on Danny, you know it makes sense!

Toulon/ France was an option last time but are the big French teams really interested in him now? I'd imagine Toulon with all their bucks and pulling power would be aiming higher.

When he left Sale he was in or around the England set-up. He's nowhere near that now. Cips's star is fading and his options will be much reduced, especially when you throw in that many see him as a maverick on and off the field and a poor kick ratio (from hand and place kicking).

I first heard rumors that there had been some initial soundings out between Sale and Cips in early October and they don't seem to be going away. He was settled in Manchester, Cips/ Dimes is a combination that works and both know it. Importantly for Sale with our current attendance issues, he remains one of the more marketable players (in a way AJ could never be). There's more money at the club now but I'm not convinced he has too many appealing options and would be as expensive as you think and not as much as some of the other options being brandished about such as Giteau.

He's knows our structure as well!!!
I'm sure a French team would be willing to fling cash at him. If La Rochelle can have Ryan Lamb as back up I'm sure he will find a club.

I don't think he's fading. You just needed to look at Wasps without him. They looked like relegation fodder.

Imagine if we sign Taylor a SA loosehead Brooks, Barrow, Mostert, Cips and Van Cannonball. Exciting times.

I think you may be a bit quick to call Cips star as fading Bullshark. In most pundits opinion except Eddie Jones, Cips has been stellar this year. If he remains marketable to us, he remains marketable in France too.

Nonetheless, I think you hit on some good points. I havent heard of any firm interest from France for him, more an assumption that there would be interest on both sides. His value in marketing terms should give Dimes freedom to make a pretty decent offer if he wishes to. If rumours are to be believer, the differentiator for us could be length of contract rather than the absolute level of salary.

As mentioned above, the only way i see him back at Sale is a proper big offer for an extended period.

Some mention the great relationship he has with Dinmes..wasn't it true that Dimes told him to fckoff on his first return to the AJ having joined Wasps?

Interesting dynamic if cipriani comes back. Certainly would be exciting to watch if RJVR can be signed long term to play alongside him and with James, JOC, solomona, yarde, Addison et al outside. Plus De Klerk keeping the defence honest around the ruck (albeit perhaps with a more consistent pass from the base would be nice). However it does beg a couple of questions:

A. if AJ isn't starting and cips isn't kicking, who is? Addison and De Klerk capable but I would put them in the back up category.
B. An option of AJ or Cips at 10 is a great contrast assuming we are looking to extend AJ.

What is encouraging is being linked with Danny alongside Brookes, Schoeman, Mostert is we are trying to add quality as well as numbers. Encouraged if any of these turn into fruition.

If we do get Danny back I think AJ would be off somewhere else as he won’t want to play, presumably, second fiddle to anyone. He’s arguably proven his worth over the past few months and it’d be a kick in the teeth for him to be injured, out of contact in the summer and DC signed up.

With Faf as he is at the moment, a bit of a ‘maverick”, somewhat erratic sometimes, I think we need someone more steady outside him rather than another “flair” player like DC.

I would imagine the way our backs have been playing this year, the bonus points for tries and AJ's kicking %, that the coaching team would be delighted to extend AJ's contract, in which case we have sufficient back up, and youngsters coming through to make Cips' re-signing unnecessary.
After all , our current 10 seems to have got to grips with our structure/systems.
If AJ is not to be extended, Cips might be worth a punt but we will need a more reliable goal kicking points machine .

Does Wasps have a kicking coach as good as Callard? Cips would surely learn from him?

Pre injury, some suggested AJ would be leaving. Unless he had something signed, clubs may not commit until sometime in to rehab

Cips is a very talented 10 ball in hand, he just isn't a great goal kicker and his stats throughout his career show that . He is 30 now and I suspect he has had a lot of specialist kicking coaches working with him over the years.
Whilst I have no strong feelings should he return, I wouldn't want him to be the first choice goal kicker.

Danny is still a better kicker than faf, but judging by the article on the offy that macginty would get all the support he needed might imply we'll keep him.
I also don't think macginty would have a massive problem playing 2nd fiddle to cips.

I feel like it's not a case of whether or not we'll offer him a contract but more whether or not he'll choose to leave.

We did a lot of re-signing early season, and AJ wasn't one of the players. Part of me was thinking maybe, with JOC arriving, he wanted to see where he stood in the pecking order and now that it's clear that he's our first choice 10 he'll sign a new contract, but I've got a bad feeling he'll be moving on.

Olyy I think your concern about AJ staying is right. Pat Lam said he'd be back for him after his 2 year contract with us expired. Next season Pat Lam will be in the Premiership with Bristol so guess where I think AJ will be playing next season.

I do hope I am wrong and we re-sign AJ on a long term contract as I think he's been excellent this season and I always have confidence when he steps up to kick a pen or conversion wherever it's taken from. He's only young and has the opportunity to become a Sale Sharks legend IMHO if he sticks around. I think we'll come to regret it if we let him go.

I'd be really torn about Cips returning. He was superb for us, but the harsh reality is that with him turning 30 I can only see him going one way. Add in the fact that AJ has been and we have a couple of extremely talented youngsters coming through and I'd actually probably decide against it.

Oh I don't doubt it. My reservation is that a fair portion of his game is based on his athletic prowess - his speed off the mark plays a massive part in keeping defenders honest.

Im with 45jumper here on balance. I am sure Cips could be very good for us for a couple of years at least but I would rather look to the future with AJ and our youngsters coming through. AJ has shown his potential over the past few months, now that he is settled in, and he has really come on in leaps and bounds imo.

Difficult decision though.

Re: Cipriani back to Sale?
clutch (IP Logged)
11 January, 2018 12:43
It is a difficult one. Don't buy the speed off the mark argument at all. Cips came is based on making late decisions and forcing the opposition defence to make an error. He can do that until he's about 40.

We have to be thinking top 4 though, and making top 4 signings to drive us up the table. At the very least we lack cover at 10, and that needs to be addressed. I don't see the signing of Cipriani hampering Wilkinson's development. He'd just be playing the odd game as our 3rd choice 10 next season, instead of James or O Connor.

How old was Hodgson when he signed for Sarries? He did ok for them! Certainly helped Farrell's development having him there, I believe.

Re: Cipriani back to Sale?
MartWhit (IP Logged)
11 January, 2018 13:06
Cips certainly is superb with his late decision making Clutch.

However, I also agree with 45 that his speed is a big part fo his game, not so much through the gap, but to put himself in a position where he's difficult to defend. He often sprints very quickly from his initial position to put himself into the defensive mismatch he's looking for. Thats an aspect of his game that will fall off over time, but for a guy who keeps himself in shape, I dont think he starts falling off a cliff at 30. I'd personally not be worried until he was the wrong side of 35.

Re: Cipriani back to Sale?
Crutch (IP Logged)

I think a Top 4 side would be looking to have DC and AJ at 10, with JoC at 15 (or 13 depending upon what's happening with Will) with Haley.

Not saying that's realistic for us, but if we truly are looking to match that ambition then that's the kind of thing we should be looking for IMO.

Add in a top 1 and 4 (and Van Cannonball) and I actually think that would be getting close to a trophy winning team!!!

Time for a lie down now before getting too excited........:

Based on what? Wishful thinking?

Not according to Tommy Taylor when I put much the same question to him. Also put to him how different it was to play under Dai Young compared to Dimes - his response "chalk and cheese". Jamma, Myall, Rob Miller all similar and a big part of the culture in the club..

No. The rumour was that Taylor was unhappy and quite a few other players were due to apparently too many big egos. No idea if it's true. Hence the rumour.
Not wishful thinking. I enjoy watching Wasps and only Taylor and Cips would get in our starting 15. Gaskell possibly, certainly the 22. Myall is decent, as is Mcintyre. Miller has put too much muscle on and isn't the player he was when he had his big breakthrough season.

Just rayalistic in trying not to raise hopes too high and to reduce public speculation.

It takes a lot of misgivings to make an ambitious player move clubs to one that is currently far less successfull both on and off the field, especially with Dimes in charge.

In many delicate secret negotiations where that is the case any "light" shed on them on sites such as this is often counterproductive.
I have a very good reason to think that was the case with a certain Sarries scrum-half. Many of those misgivings were addressed in response to the 'heads-up' and he stayed put.

Whilst players ARE under contract elsewhere however and (in England) way way before the relevant January, careless posting of gossip can effect outcomes.

DC, RJVR, James/Addison

McGuigan/Yarde JOC Denny

Arguable that his best form was at Sale however...

I realise I'm probably on my own but I'd personally prefer AJ in there and not just because he can kick....

Correct with the kicking but would definitely be eventful!

Perfectly reasonable Grumpy. I'm open to playing AJ in a different position as well. As well as alternating.

Sarries alternated with Farrell and Hodgson for a good few seasons. They have an excellent second choice 10 now as well.

Not for me.

DC is different class in an entertaining attacking sense.

To exaggerate the point look how many on this board were more than happy with Jennings at 12, and then Rohan came in and showed what a difference an absolute class player can make to a team.

Now Rohan outside DC would be a mouthwatering prospect given how good he is at taking a ball at pace but getting both would be beyond wildest expectations.

Obviously AJs place kicking and defence is better and based on recent performances I hope he stays. I think he can be a really good player for us, but given the option of DC for me it's not even a contest (esp if Faf kept kicking duties).

What has happened to JOC’s kicking?!

Staly's first article above is spot-on re. making the most of DC's ability.
However the article doesn't mention that maximising ball retention also mitigates against one of his faults. He is not that good at a very structured territory game.
..I still have nightmares of some of those charge-downs when he tried to kick to touch.

The article above is mainly about James O'Connor. I'm not sure there is any mention of DC, unless you mean Dan Carter.

The link was brought in to question why would we be missing a quality goal kicker if AJ did not feature and why haven’t we seen JOC kicking from the tee?

Sir Charles the 6th best pressure kicker in the world. Ahead of Andy Goode and waaaay ahead of Jonny (92nd).

Not many would’ve guessed that in 2014.

JOC hasn't kicked much at all since he arrived - penalties/kickoffs/at goal all go elsewhere.
Wonder if it's a hangover from his serious leg (can't remember if it was knee or ankle?) injury that he had when he arrived?
AJ didn't kick for months after he arrived due to his hamstring issues.

Wonder what the sample size is. How often has he started and been the goal kicker for AUS?

Anyway the report is pseudo-scientific twaddle.

For instance: Daly will always have a worse record than Farrell. The figures will prove it. However he, Daly, will only be called on to take the kicks that are outside Farrell's range. Those kicks carry a lower percentage success than one in front of the posts, whether to win the match or not. If Farrell took the kicks he would have zero success, and because of that he doesn't talk them with the result that his overall success rate is higher, as indeed is his pressure success rate.

There's more than one above my post: I was of course referring to the one about Cips posted by Staly indicating he was being made the most of by Wasps. If you look at the timing of the posts you'll see how subsequent posts crossed.
This rugbypass article. Did you not read it? It's referred to numerous times.

As most thought it has now being confirmed that DC is leaving Waps at the end of the season, Japan or France the most likely destinations. I can see him in Japan personally.

I remember O'Connor being the starting goalkicker for the Australians in the last Lions series over there, so he must have been pretty highly rated by them.
