South African Looseheads

The boys on Shark Tank were discussing rumours of 2 South African looseheads. Not heard anything about them elsewhere. Names are Pierre Sherman and Korne Forre. Sorry for name inaccuracies taken directly from listening so spelling errors and mishearing likely.

I had a quick google.

It appears to be Pierre Schoeman, who is a young prop, looks pretty chunky, plenty of improvement and upside in him you'd think but probably not the finished article at present.

Corne Fourie looks to be of similar proportions, but has been around a few years for the blue bulls, followed by the Lions. Probably as good as he's going to be, but not seen him play to comment.

I think both represent Dimes view, also embodied in WGJ, that scrummaging is diminishing as a prime facet of prop play, and that power in the loose is increasing.

Not heard it yet but probably:

Pierre Schoeman (23, Bulls)

Corné Fourie (29, Lions)

There's been a debate and some disquiet on some of the Irish forums regarding the import of South Africans and the fact the local provincial talent that have played upto Ireland u20 age grade are being sidelined by these imports.

Some provinces are starting to bring SA players into their Academys at age 17/18 straight from school, whether this is a way to circumvent the new 5 year residency rule im not sure, even after 5 years the player will still only be 23.

There seems to be a commonly held theory that if they are forwards and from South Africa they must be better than what we have already.

Why do South Africa produce much bigger quicker forwards than in europe, who knows?

By the way 4 NZ players have been banned for Steroid use today.

It starts at school level, as anyone who has toured with a school side knows all too well. Many play down a year, against 2nd XVs and still lose...!
Perhaps it's something to do with the size of South African steaks!

Apparently once you've eaten enough steaks and get to the required size you stop eating steaks and just maintain your size in the Gym,a few players i know say that its an open secret within the game(that it happens in SA) and it starts young(eating steak that is)!

Have we not got too many non-English players?

If we sign RJVR and two starting overseas front/second rowers we'll have up to 10 of our first XV being non-English, 11 if you count Denny. Can you even play that many? For all the bleating on about home-grown local talent that isn’t great reading.

(Front Row X, Evans, Second Row X, Strauss, Ross, FdK, AJMcG, RJVR, JO'C, BMcG & Denny)

I never quite bought into the 75% home grown figures. It just felt like wishful thinking. We are still doing well though and clearly continuing on the right path.

I imagine we will get linked with any South African player potentially moving here for a while. It happened to Sarries. Currently we are linked with 3 or 4. Nice for us to keep getting linked with players though

Well operation Sarries starting with developing a hardened edge and signing SA players. I'll happily follow that mode rather than the Wasps model which will never work.

the 75% local target has to be a medium term aspiration as we simply dont have the pipeline ready to deliver that quite yet.

Denny is as english as roast beef.

The 2 Saffer loose heads add a foreigner where we currently have none, and neither likely starts ahead of Harrison. Possibly offset at tight head in any case if Brookes or ANO comes in to replace Aulika.

At Present RJvR is occipying Leota's spot, so thats a scratch trade.

If Barrow comes, he likely takes starts from Ostrikov, so thats a net gain for EQP.

A Cips signing also adds to EQP vs AJ. A Giteau/Cooper signing leaves us in the same boat.

So overall, probably little change

All of which ignores the elephant in the room of Brexit which could have an impact on European players like Tarus counting as foreign (no idea if Kolpak would also come under review also)...

They can presumably still work here with visas though, something that shouldn't be a problem with a pro-contract?

Normally you are obliged to return to your country of origin, leaving the UK, before you can apply for a work visa or a owrk visa renewal. That obligation may well be waived for EU nationals already in the UK., but it's still not formally been agreed and confirmed.
It's certainly the case for Australian nationals whether they are married to a UK citizen or not.
It's also far from certain they will be granted a visa if there's a UK national who is manifestly able to do the same job.

And even if they are granted a VISA more players will come into scope of 2 foreigner per squad rules unless those are reviewed and relaxed.
