RIP MIchael Green - author, actor, rugby player and journalist
04 March, 2018 11:27
His hilarious "The Art of Coarse Rugby" (1960) made him famous and grew into a succesful series. He was also a rugby journo for the Sunday Times in the days journos rang the story in to a copy taker and then returned to London by train. He enjoyed amateur dramatics as well. Unusually for someone from Leicester he had a sense of humour.

He was involved with the amateur dramatics group in Northampton where my parents met.

He was responsible for a great series of books "the art of coarse...." All sorts of sports were covered, though I don't recall him doing "The Art of Coarse Fishing". They, along with Stephen Potter's books, are necessary reading for anyone serious about sport.

His one run is now over, and what a good run it was.

There were those of us who wandered about the 4th and 5th teams who were probably a very fitting template for some of the characters in the rugby book. There was a ring of truth to most of the contents of that book.

In the same way that Noises Off and The Smallest Show on Earth are documentaries about the theatre and cinema trades, The Art of Coarse Acting was an essential handbook for all Amateur Dramatic Societies.

He was a brilliant author.

Didn't he once speak at the Sale Annual Dinner? (may have imagined it)
