Kendal U15's drew with Kirkby Lonsdale U15's 12-12 in the Cumbria County Cup today - but Kendal went through to the next round, because we were the Away team.
It was the first time in 5 years that Kirkby Lonsdale haven't beaten us !

Were there any fixtures in Division 1? The season these days is punctuated by spare days, in case there is a need to catch up, and the occasional cup game. I see Burnage 2 have played 11 and there are 11 games remaining, i.e. 22 games in total, which is correct for a 12 team league.

Apparently it was a cup game. Sandbach 2's 26 Burnage 2's 20 played in a monsoon.

Kendal 13 Kirkby Lonsdale 11. KL scored a try in injury time, but missed the conversion which would have given them a draw (which would have made a trio of draws in Northern Division). 2 back to back wins has helped to full them away from the bottom two and closer to Lymm who are 4th bottom. KL seem to be in a slump, with 4 defeats out of their last 5 games.

Sale FC 31 - 18 Cinderford, now 10th of 16.

Notwithstanding a couple of bizarre decisions to go for penalties, when we were pretty much in control and comfortably ahead rather than kick to the corner, SFC played well. Had we gone for the corner we might easily have scored our bonus point try.

I doubt it. The team should probably just play under the Sale FC banner, unless SS are the real backers of the movement. If this is the case, they would've been better to highlight/encourage the number of other ladies' and girls' teams in the Area which are all competing for the same player pool.

Macclesfield
Manchester
Stockport
Didsbury Toc H
Eccles
Broughton Park
Leigh

Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of the top level club in the NW having a women's team, but really they should have looked at what others in the local area were offering already.

Exactly, SS highlighting Waterloo's activities would've been a good step. I suppose an issue with that could be that Waterloo are not the best located to be the beacon of NW women's rugby/

By no means does that mean that I don't think they shouldn't be at the top table, I just think a second team in the Eastern part of the NW could also compete at that level; however, whether Sale FC or SS are the Club(s) to do that is questionable given the number of pre-existing women's teams in that Area that are established and have junior girls' teams in place to provide long term support.

Also Sale FC & SS risk irking some other local clubs by poaching* players with the carrot of Tyrells Premiership Rugby when that prize can not be guaranteed by the Club.

*Personally I don't see it as poaching. Players are of course free to choose who they play for but it is all down to personal interpretation.

Late to this discussion and can only assume that Sale are looking to emulate something of what Quins did. They literally moved a team from Kent to Twickenham and created the pro Ladies.

Since then they’ve become one of the preeminent teams in the league but the club has also fully embraced women’s rugby. They’re aiming for the attendance record later this season and the club very visibly promotes the women’s game - all with Richmond on their doorstep.

Mightily disappointed with the 1st XV referee who'd obviously looked at the league table and decided who would eventually win. There was a great deal of earnest discussion between the referee and his assessor.
The Carlisle President nominated the referee as his "Man of the Match" not entirely tongu-in-cheek.

Mike, I'm hoping that you guys stay up.
For Kendal, it'll depend if they are playing in the NW or NE Division next season - I'm unsure how it works when a team can play in more than one area (e.g Penrith were in the NE last season but are NW this season)

Something of a late Renaissance for Caldy. A win sees them push ahead of Cambridge. Winning next week at Moseley would mean leap-frogging them too. A loss (or draw) and a Cambridge win would see Caldy relegated I believe.

More worrying for me is the overall state of rugby. Caldy 2nds were fairly convincing winners of their league, Conference A. However, there are no other senior teams playing regularly. A third team did get out a few weeks back, but that was mainly colts who haven't been getting many games with the demise of the colts' league.

Even worse Sale FC 2nds have been removed from their league, as a number of games had been cried off (five, I think, in total for the season. From the outside the closer links with Sharks don't seem to have helped, to put it euphemistically. I have my theories as to how and why this has happened, but I wonder if any Sale FC members would be prepared to comment. It doesn't seem that long ago that both clubs (and many others) were getting four teems out.

Speaking for myself and not for or on behalf of SFC, I think there are many reasons, some specific to SFC and some more general.

As I have said earlier, I'm not sure that the sharing of players between SS and SFC has been a great help to us. As The Law of Unintended Consequences has, in my view, demonstrated it has resulted in an ever changing and unsettled line up so we lack consistency in our 1st XV.

SFC only have one pitch at Heywood Road, all the others are at our training facilities at Carrington so when playing at the latter it doesn’t necessarily seem to the players that they are a part of SFC because they are geographically remote from the main Clubhouse. There are, to the best of my knowledge, no real social or bar facilities at Carrington (I'm happy to be corrected as I haven’t been there in a while) and to an extent that takes the pre- and post- game atmosphere away.

The advent of professionalism has turned the game into more of a “spectator sport”, by which I mean that more people watch yet they would never consider joining a local Club or playing the game themselves.

There is a general tendency away from volunteering or joining Clubs and societies of any form. I volunteer with several charities (National Trust, Cancer Research UK, Stockport Plaza, RNLI and, until recently, the Multiple Sclerosis Society) and each and every one of them is struggling to get volunteers to help for even as little as collecting for only an hour a year! Quite why this is I know not, but it may be to do with the “instant gratification” culture in society generally and a lack of understanding that behind every event, no matter how small it might be, there has been an invisible group of people working very hard to get the show on the road,

If volunteering and/or Club memberships continue their decline then a lot of charities and Clubs will cease to function to the detriment of us all.

One thing that does surprise me is that amongst membership of this august and highly esteemed forum must be members of many different local rugby Clubs of all levels and ability and yet rarely does any Club come on here to promote their Club or its activities and special events. There are a few exceptions, of course, but in the main there is no local Club information. Even Sale FC rarely post under their own user ID and they have both historical and current relationships with Sale Sharks.

If Clubs don't promote themselves then how are the "unattached" to become aware of what local Clubs can offer or what events may be coming up? I know that many Clubs send out periodic newsletters by email telling their Members what is happening at their Club - but they are preaching to the already converted, how does that encourage potential new Members or casual attenders who obviously don’t get such newsletters?

My fellow Moderators and our highly regarded and respected Editor (I can do sycophancy and fake sincerity with the best of them) may disagree but I would look favourably upon “public service information” posts that weren’t blatant advertising.

I shall now get shot down by all and sundry but, hey ho, it’s Sunday and I’m off to toast some crumpets! (Sm72)

Broadstreet 16 v 17 Scunny

Finish 1st Midlands Premier. Promotion to the national leagues, let's hope we can put up more of a fight than last time.

I wonder if Mr Folau would be interested that Scunny's points for this season - 666

Poynters, I presume that's a case of the devil being in the detail.

iBozz, thanks for the detailed reply. I pretty much agree with all you are saying. Some things such as there only being one pitch hadn't really come into my thinking. (As an aside, in Uni at Cardiff our playing fields were a few miles out of town. At that time, late 1960s, we had a coach for home games, never mind away games. There was no disappearing by anyone immediately the game had finished.) one would hope that fixture lists, as much as possible, would be organised with one side playing at home while the other were away, and vice versa.

My theory was, and maybe still is, that Sharks have player A who needs a run out at Sale FC so long time servent of the club player M is pushed into the 2nd team from which Player X is excluded and so doesn't get a game. X then joins another club, or more likely stops playing altogether. The next week A doesn't need a game so M is recalled, but the second team are now short of a full complement. As long as Sale FC have a first team doing reasonably well, I don't see Sharks being too bothered.

I did see a snippet a week or two ago the RFU and other unions were becoming concerned about the lack of numbers. I tried my best ten years or so ago to re-establish a 4th team at Caldy. Other than several individuals, the club itself weren't too bothered. Nor, of course, were the RFU. So long as there was enough money coming in for the prawn sandwiches the RFU had no need to be worried.
