10-12 Signings / Re-signings

Pretty amazed this hasn't been discussed on here - Diamond made some very interesting comments after the game as per the BBC match report...

Quote:
On Sale's hopes of keeping Rob du Preez: "Negotiations are going well and we will probably be making around 10 to 12 announcements in the New Year of people who have signed and people who have re-signed, and Rob will hopefully be one of them.
"He's confident and he's good. It was wet conditions so it wasn't brilliant ball in hand across the field, but we managed to control the play."

On Sale's performance: "We managed, through our defence, to stop them playing. Every time they tried to get it out to their big lads on the wing, we were up in their faces and they couldn't get it there.

"Their number 10 had to turn back in and he must have carried eight or nine times in the first half and that was our intention; not to be able to get the pass away. I thought Tom Curry, Jean-Luc du Preez, Jono Ross and the front-row looked after that area really well."

I am a big fan of Dimes and admire how he has regularly had us punching above our weight with, until recently, easily the least resources in the Prem.

If there is one thing that irritates me though, it is his habit of making grand predictions about signings. Based on previous form, I suspect that we will be very lucky to have news of 10-12 signings/re-signings in the New Year

ēLooks into the crystal ball*

Re-signings:
Webber is only 33 in summer and the way heís been playing Iíd give him another year. That is unless someone better and his mould comes in. Langdon and Nield could do with another season fighting it out for the 16 spot.

Evans will probably go back to France, potentially to Biarritz or back to NZ. A very good servant to the club but it seems as though Beaumont is in the process of taking his mantle of caller and the more lithe of the two locks.

Faf. We hope. He appreciated the ovation he got on Saturday.

RdP Iím not sure about. Is he better than AJ? Do we want two similar type players in the same position? Look at Bath with Burns and Priestland. Wilkinson needs more game time and unless he goes on loan next year then having two 10s above him isnít going to do him any favours.

JldP adds a lot to our back row, his carrying could potentially have us playing x2 Curry which in the long run will undoubtably help us keep both. Strauss hasnít (other than Bordeaux away) hasnít hit the heights we may have expected and Beaumont is taking the lock route. Moore would be the 8 rotation option the season after next when Straussí contract is done.

Jono reportedly joined on a two year deal which suggests another contract for him too. Deserved.

The rest Iíd say would be academy guys.

I spotted a very quick item on the telegraph website about RdP signing for longer, but it seemed then to very quickly turn negative about it, as RdP said 'I would rather not comment' and that was more or less the entire article!.

Donít forget Beaumont is out of contract this season and there have been hints he might leave.

Think it would be good to get RdP - strength in depth is what we need.

I forgot Beaumont but you would hope he would stay.

10 isnít really a rotation position as you want your out and out first choice, trusting them to run the backs and to an extent feeding their ego to make them confident of running the show. Wilkinson as the back up and our utility players if weíre in dire need.

Wilkinson has looked good but he's very young and and only really getting a look in because we have no one else.

AJ will be missing for internationals and is pretty injury prone, Sam James isn't a 10.
If we don't sign RdP I still think we need another 10.

Iíd rather a trusted 9 who could play the Faf role when heís away than a similar level 10 to AJ. However if itís an agreement to play from the start of the season, missing the Currie Cup and covering for the RWC absentees then thatís another story.

You need two good players in each position. Assuming Wilkinson isnít quite ready then we do need someone. Sarries had Farrell and Hodgson.

One was at the end of his career whilst the other the start. They have Farrell and Malins now with about 5 years between them. Same with Exeter though the gap is wider between Steenson and Simmonds. Two 10s of the same age and ability is a different kettle of fish.

First announcement tomorrow according to John Everton on Twitter. What would be the best present for Sale fans on Christmas Day? Got to be Faf re signing

Faf signing a new, early, long term deal would be genuinely massive news.
