Connacht v Sale commentary : Saturday, 12th January 2019 at 3:00pm.

Galway Bay FM say that they are carrying live commentary of the game on Saturday:

Quote:
We will be carrying live commentary of Connacht v Sale in the European Challenge Cup on Saturday afternoon from 3pm.

Go to their website, click the menu and select Listen Now or go direct to their radio player. You will be presented with an advertisement for something or other but can just close it and the live stream should then start. If those fail, try here.

I am assuming that “rights restrictions” won’t apply and that the commentary will be available in the UK. If it isn’t then go via a VPN which has servers in Ireland.

A later email states:

Quote:
As far as I know it is available World Wide

For those going to Galway who may wish to listen to the commentary on air whilst at the game they broadcast on 95.8FM (Galway City), 96.8FM (County Galway), 97.2FM (Gort) and 97.4FM (East Galway and West County Galway).

Many thanks for the advice from John Mulligan at the Sports Department of Galway Bay FM, much more helpful than when I have contacted the BBC with similar queries in the past!

Incidentally the station is Galway Bay FM, not Galway FM.

Kick to win and we decide to go for the corner and give away a penalty in the lineout (as we had been doing all game). Connacht then (tap it and) kick it dead for the win.

Listening to Galway bay fm they said he had given away 29 penalties 14-15 which they said was down to inconsistent refereeing more than anything.

Agree that faf should have kicked for goal as even a 33% chance at goal is better than the percentage chance of scoring a try.

2.3b. If 2 clubs in the same pool are equal on match points at the end of the pool stage then ranking will be decided by the results of the 2 relevant clubs.
i the club with the greater number of match points from those matches or if equal
ii the club with the best aggregate points difference from the matches.

We had our chances today, and failed to take them. Careless discipline failing to respond to something that the ref, right or wrong, was going to ping us for every time. Shows we still have a lot to learn outside of the premiership environment.

Nonetheless, we got a point, we're still top of the group and our final game is at home against a team likely to be very disinterested. No other side came away from ireland with a win this week, so we hardly underperformed. Connacht are a decent side.

I think the improvement story is still well intact. We stayed resilient when into the wind, and put ourselves back into the game quite comfortably.

Because we are top of the group, results against Connacht being the determining factor as we are on the same points. So we just need to match or better their result to finish top. Think 5 points would also get us shone quarter, but I’m struggling to see beyond clermont winning this competition

Some thoughts from the match as I consider what to have for lunch......

For starters - great to see so many Sale fans over, Galway was a lovely place to visit, locals were very accommodating and their supporters were most welcoming

Always going to be a tricky game so for a loss by 1 point but still remain top looking at the big picture is good and in theory we should have an easier fixture next week.

Positives were I thought Strauss had some real runs, Wilkinson after a couple of slips early on showed some good strength when he took contact to allow support time to come over to him. He was forced inside several times and overall the experience can only do him good. He's got good hands as well. The back 3 looked solid under the high ball - the wind was pretty swirly in the 2nd half and Reed in particularly took a really good catch under pressure. The front row held the scrum up well and won us a crucial penalty with a few mins to go.

On the areas of improvement. We seemed, in the first half in particular, to revert back to 5-6 weeks ago - dropped balls when not under pressure in particular really halted any momentum, passes not to the receiver cost us their second try. I personally think it was notable that without Josh Beaumont we lost bulk and struggled to get any momentum in mauls and struggled massively to combat their rolling maul which cost us them match (IMHO) as we just leaked penalties.

In the first half we just didn't have the linespeed nor aggression we've shown in defence recently and although it came back in the second half we were passive at times and they made yards. I lost count of the number of times we took the ball into contact and ended up losing it, recently we have been a real tight unit whenever someone has taken it into contact but perhaps with the exerts of recent events we just couldn't manage the ball in contact.

Faff missed a couple of kicks but landed quite a few - we really need AJ back when the Prem start.

Frustrating way to lose - came down from 17-5 at half time (I think) - were leading 21-20 then really messed up. Most unusually the James brothers made a very rare mistake. From the kickoff Luke failed to clear lines and maybe keen to make an impression tried to run the ball out of our 22 - ran straight into 4 defenders and got ripped......a few moments later from our scrum Sam booted it out on the full - however we have taken the ball back in - lineout to them, rolling maul....penalty and that 3 points were the only ones they scored in the second half. We did have chances to get the win and having turned down what looked a very difficult hit we went for a lineout drive and for the 4th or 5th time got pinged for what I assumed was having players in front of the catcher.

Connaught deserved winners - the loss isn't that big for us - more frustrated that we reverted to old habits of handling errors and have lost the chance to build momentum we had really been gaining

Half a dozen errors, home advantage and Connacht having a better driving maul cost us the game IMHO.
A forward's decision to shovel on a loose ball, a ref missing James Mitchell's (later admitted) knock-on, the odd interpretation of "crossing" in Mauls, Luke James' kneeling not being a 'tackle complete' (-release!), a bit of first inexperience from our 10 and a couple of poor kicks (one place, one field) just enough to negate the fact that we looked the better team overall.
I always reckon that whilst home advantage is around 10-15 points in England it's more like 15-20 in Ireland.
It would have been a very difficult penalty kick at the end, only an oddish call therefore.
Both options significantly less than 50% success rate I reckoned.
Great week-end though. Very friendly supporters.

In any case ? less likely to play Clermont before the final ? I call that a RESULT!
