Ah, so it was a proper band - that explains it. I mean, previously when we've played you (home or away) you've had some 'enthusiastic'winking smiley drumming going on, but I was impressed with the musical performance coming across on tv tonight. I had wondered if it was a recording being played.

Still a Tyke - whatever the name!

An extra dimension to the match day experience.
I heard lots of positive comments, no negative ones.(Sm152)

I thought they were good, too. But, as I said in an email ...

Quote:
I couldn't work out whether the band were ours or theirs - their playing seemed spasmodic (yet melodious) and seemed to favour neither team. I presume, as they played a couple of snatches from "Do you hear ..." that they were ours so a little more "enthusiasm" would be better with appropriate playing to whip the crowd out of their traditional torpor. We need something to get chants going, as the drum used to do. But it's a start and I'd like to see it developed and expanded.

I note Cleggy's comment "... every time the lads set to a scrum!!" but he must have a more tuneful ear than mine for I detected no pattern to their playing.

Apart from that, a very sound (Ho! Ho! (Sm16) Not bad for before 8:30 on a Saturday morning!) experiment.

Is that to be the permanent location for the proposed band?

I too thought the band was great! The little snatches of music every now and then didn't seem too intrusive, but were good for jollying along the proceedings. I couldn't tell if the band was ours or brought along by Brive - it was certainly the sort of sound that we've heard at away trips abroad, and I liked it!

More please!

(Not sure about "Do you hear the people sing" though - perhaps we should lay this one to rest...... (Sm14))

I thought "Do you hear...." was excellent and Sue B and I were belting out the words, don't think anyone around us knew what was going on though! I think if it was played at every game though we would soon get to identify with it and enjoy it.

I too thought the band excellent - played at all the right bits, added to the event without intruding into the rugby. LOVED the tradional rugby half time - brass band playing, supporter on pitch trying to kick ball.

Even though the crowd wasn't as big as we've had previously I thought that was the best atmosphere for a long time.

My vote also goes for "more of the same please".

Sounded brill.

I'm deffo with Anne, I think "Do you..." has the feel of a REAL anthem for us although there's a bit in the middle where I stumble over the words.

If this could be rewritten slightly and played a few times I'm sure we could be onto a massive winner here.

More please!!!!

Absolutely brilliant band! Enjoyed the sing-a-long to 'sweet chariot' by a few of us in the Printerland. No one seemed to join in with 'Do you hear the people sing' so no I didn't hear the people sing. Shame!! Much much more of the band please, please please. Would be good with some maturish cheerleaders me thinks

Also much enjoyed on TV by 'her indoors' who still can't get to a match owing to post op recovery, she particularly enjoyed the 'Star Wars' theme because it helped Luke 'feel the force' and play a stormer! (Sm152) She didn't hear the people sing either!

Excellent night all round and for me it was the most entertaining game for a long while, very good for lovers of tries!!.

Also enjoyed Kingsley's comments on Radio Manc. on way home - more disturbed about conceding 4 tries than the dominance of the victory. A good analytic coaches perspective.

Great programme as well with some good articles, particularly Pete Liggins & Jenny Dixon plus others but not 'on this one occasion', the Mole, unfortunately (IMHO of course). Surely, if the 'customer' receives poor quality produce he/she is entitled to have a moan and be 'glass half empty' on occasion Mr or Mrs Mole?

Ditto for our little group in the Vernon-as-was: loved the band! Thought the section of kids (Railway End, in red) who cheered and danced and bounced despite the rain were worth evey penny they were paid smiling smiley

Musical theme continued:

A: At least Brive haven't given up! They ARE trying
B: Well, ok - half trying. Sort of a semibreve
A: *groan*
C: (from row behind) That's a comment of note
A: *groan*
B: Keep this up and I'll be very crotchety
A: *groan*

- and it went on - but I guess you just had to be there...

Good game, wonderful atmosphere - thank you!

Excellent idea of having the band and suppying the SaleSharks flags, both of which were prominent in the ground and on TV.Some one is listening in the club and I suspect that it is James Jennings

Yes, loved the flags! Those, and the band, good idea. It gets the crowd going, and helps the atmosphere. The kids loved the flags - they were going like the proverbial hot cakes - and a nice souvenir for supporters too.

Having previously stated on this board that I will not be renewing my season ticket next year, after last night I am having a serious rethink.

I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience (apart from post-match - more on this later). There was a real buzz from prior to the match, caused partly by the giving away of free flags. I gave some out and the kids just couldn't believe they were getting something for nothing. Seeing the flags waving in the ground and when I watched the recording this morning reminded me of one of the elements I love about European rugby - atmosphere.

However, that would not have been enough on its own to make last night a special experience. The clincher for me was the band which was just excellent and we simply MUST have them for every match! Despite a good friend having to move seats to reduce the deafening effect of the music, their contribution to my personal enjoyment was immense and my favourite tune was the Star Wars one. Can we adopt this as our own as I think it has exactly the right feel to inspire both the players and the fans.

Oh, and the rugby was brilliant too!!!

As for the post-match experience, I echo what Rosie SS's Mum has said on another thread. I was looking forward to a celebratory drink in the tent but it was not possible! Never mind, look out for a new thread about a Rozafa gathering post match on 20th.

To reiterate: Stockport Brass Band must be adopted as our official band. Please will someone look into the possibility of having them for every home game - their position may need to be reviewed to minimise inconvenience to supporters that still want to be able hear the following day, but I'm sure this hurdle can be overcome.

the band came accross fantastically well on the tv good mix of tunes and their timing should only get better if the become a regular fixture, loved the use of the Imperial March in the second half every time the scrum packed down. I even joined in do you hear the people sing despite being sat on the sofa, even if no one else could I suspect my neighbours could hear the people sing!

Before I post a have to declare an interest, a band member is a friend and work colleague.

Putting that to one side I thought it really added to the atmosphere last night and I really hope they play again and again. Please can we move them out of the rear corner and nearer to the front of the stand so that those of us in the Cheadle end can hear and see them properly and that will be the icing on the cake.

I think last night showed what a few tries, a few free flags for the kids and some music can do. I didn't get in until 3am and am happy despite the hangover.

Please PSA and BK can we have some more nights like that. Cheers to all involved in setting it up.

The band were great, sure hope they will be a regular feature.

Perhaps they need to play a few more 'traditional' rugby songs to get the crowd singing.

Well donw Swanny, I guess you organised this.

I have to re-iterate what has been said above. Well done to whoever organised the band and the flags. brilliant particularly the Imperial March. Was The Flintstones especially for Seabass (Sm100) . And I'm sure the more the band is given the opportunity to play the more 'appropriate' the music will become - e.g. the last post for the binning, the up and at 'em for kickoffs etc.

On behalf of the band (and as one of the players last night) I just want to say thanks for all the kind words on here and express our gratitude to all the supporters who applauded us/thanked us on their way out.

I know all the band thoroughly enjoyed themselves and we would dearly love to be asked again soon (vs the Budgies maybe??!)... or even better still build some sort of more permanent relationship with the club.

With regards to the timings and music played last night was really an experiment to see what works (and what doesnt) but the over all feeling was that with some fine tuning (sorry lol) and with a few suggestions/input from yourselves it can only get better and better!

Thanks again

Ah yes, if you came back for the Falcons game you could give us a few snippets of 'Stop the Pigeon' should they be fortunate enough to make a break with the ball.

If we're in need of holding onto the ball for the last couple of minutes how about 'Oompah oompah stick it up yer jumper!'

Theme from Ground Force for the groundsmen at half time!

Quick...someone....this is a totally positive thread about Sale Sharks!!!!!

I totally agree that the band came over well on TV and personally I think they should become a regular fixture, if not permanent. The flags idea did work, as I posted after the Sorries match, it gets people behind the team and possibly lifts the players, (just look at the scenes at the MadStad today)....it's great to read a positive thread and hear about everyone enjoying themselves. Well done to everyone who played a part.

The brass band were superb - really enjoyable - sorry they only had time to play two tunes at the interval.
Pity they were tucked away in the corner of the stand - hope they are here to stay - I would pay an extra few quid on my season tickets to pay them to play at home each game!!

Well done the SBB!!!

Loved it! Do you know what I really liked? It felt like it suited us and made it feel more like a club than it has since we moved to EP. People were singing along and laughing at the funny ones, it was nice. My fave was 'We Are Sailing'!

It'd be great if we could think of some Manchester-y songs for them to play as well. I bet they could do the Corrie theme but I'm not sure what I think of that, lol. We live in a great part of the country and ought to make sure the opposition fans know where they've been! I've always said this in relation to the music they play over the tannoy - a bit of Oasis, The Smiths, Take That etc would be good.

Hi everybody
We, Ray and Val, from Blackburn also really enjoyed the Stockport Brass Band last Friday night. It certainly added to the atmosphere as has been said so many times! Thought the choice of music was great! Do you hear the people sing sounds good played by a brass band and encourages people to join in and sing. Like the idea of "Sharks Official Band". It reminded us of the jazz band at Heywood Road.

When JJ first mooted the idea of a proper band replacing a drum at the 'Meet the new Chief Exec' SSSC meeting I seem to remember that he indicated that he hoped to have something in place for the start of next season.
At the time i was slightly concerned that it might be perceived as too slow in coming.
What has occurred is a classic example of 'exceeding client expectations'.
Well done that man in getting something in place to whet our appetites this season.(Sm152)
