It'll all end in tears
Round one of the playoffs in the Championship, has been completed and if you think it's tough being a Leeds supporter just imagine supporting Exeter, with all that money and all those players they lost to Nottingham today, and Bristol only just scraped through beating Pirates More shocks to come in this crazy playoff system me thinks.

4 teams in 2 groups in a round Robin, the teams who finish top of their group play the final. Exeter are particularly up against it, losing their first game and having to play London Welsh, the form team.

Isn't there a semi final, and then a 2 legged play off??

• after 6 pool matches, top 2 teams from Pools A & B progress to semi finals

* semi finals weekend of May 8

• semi final draw - 1st Pool A v 2nd Pool B & 1st Pool B v 2nd Pool A

• final May 19 & 26 - the team with the best playing record in Stage 2 will have the choice of whether to be at home for the first leg or the second leg of the Championship final

• winner of Championship final promoted to Guinness Premiership subject to fulfilling entry criteria

Re: It'll all end in tears
That means that whoever is coming up wont be able to recruit GP standard players (as they will all have signed by then), so they will instantly be at a disadvantage. You will also have a real mess on the RFUs hands (at that late in the day) if the ground doesn't then qualify. Thats REAL progress for you!

Re: It'll all end in tears
Perhaps they could get around this by developing GP class players from their own academies/grass roots scouting systems? All the coaches will know what it's like in the Prem so they should be in a position to ID talent that could make it.

Not saying this is ideal, but it seems the only way, and as Loosehead has said on many an occasion, GP experienced players do not come from the womb fully formed; there is a time when they aren't GP experienced, but even so they will be good enough. The trick is to spot them...

Re: It'll all end in tears
But do the likes of the final 8 have good enough acadamies? If they can spot up and coming players, will they have the necessary experience to handle GP pressure (which lets face it is a step up from the Championship), if they can (thats a big if), the rest of the team have to step up too, otherwise its a certain return for them the next season.
Yes, I agree that GP players don't come 'out of the womb' like that, so to develop them takes time. Is 1 season long enough?
I just hope we can break the mould after several years of trying. Lets just say that the start of the season wasn't awe inspiring, but the form of late (if we can continue it) will definately help us

So.... the team that finishes bottom of the premiership still won't know if they are going down, unless either both or neither teams that win the semi finals have Ground that fit criterea!! again that makes recruitment/resignings difficult!!!!!

Just to cheer you up Dragon. I've not smoked for over 25 years now, but, every so often, I still fancy a cig. Having said that, stopping smoking gave me a new lease of life. That is something you can look forward to.

I think I knew her Dad, going back to the thread Munkitastik raised the issue of the team relegated from the championship, like the promoted team they will not know until mid may. How can a club plan for the future, maybe the confusion is a deliberate attempt to introduce ringfencing by another name.

And Donny beat Nottingham in a great game according to my Dad.

Rumour there is Donny's budget is going down considerably next year, so perhaps ambitions have been tempered by financial and other realities. Shame, but you can't keep swallowing walloping losses. Even great, loyal sugar daddies have boundaries.

the scandalous thing about this is what's happening in the relegation play offs. bees, who didn't win a match during the whole league season and ended up on negative points, have now won both their play off games so far. if moseley, coventry or roth were to go down it would be a complete travesty.

Yes and haven't Bees suddenly got loads of loan players from a GP side - someone remind me who it is? You'd be livid if you went down instead of them.

Bristol will play Exeter in one of the semi's.
Which ever team goes through to the final will play a relaxed team with no pressure on them.
But we will be safe before our trip to Bath. So it will be Woss, Sale or Newcastle thanking LW, Bedford, Donny or Nottingham.

Why would they be relaxed olliek, don't they have to win the final? Remember what Moseley did to us at Twickenham.

LW, bedford or Donny don't meet the criteria to get promoted so they will not be playing with the same pressure as Bristol or Exeter.
