Today's game against Hartpury

Certainly was not a vintage performance and I kept looking at the scoreboard and pinching myself as I left the game. How do we manage to scrape these narrow wins? Hartpury deserved more than a losing bonus point, they have lost ground on Roth this weekend though have just got in front of Scottish on points difference.

I was sitting just in front of the radio commentators but my hearing is not what it was and I could not catch what they were saying. Can anyone who followed the game via radio fill us in on what their comments were?

I thought the performance was dreadful to be honest. What do they do in offence in the week? Whatever it is it needs changing because every other team in the league moves it better than we do, FACT. No clue at all. Inside crash ball to Fred.... and that's it. Flat and slow. U see better in Yorkshire 2. It's gone on to long. Either change the plan or personal.

The defence stood up. Mayhew beck West newborn wetton Thomas all put everything in. Scraped the win with some good vision from Watkins and support by Stevie.

Got to do better though cos that was $hite with a capital $!

Almo: I think I was a few rows in front of you with Radio Leeds in my headphones.

They essentially agreed with JDH above, but not in such strong terms. They thought that Hartpury played well after a shaky start and basically had a fairly easy job of fanning out to cover our blunt attack.

Said there was effort, but no plan B and we were a bit short of ideas and creativity behind the pack. There wa ssome praise for the forwards and the defence which forced a lot of turnovers.

They were joking that it was going to be hard to award MoM! 'Stodgy' was their, slightly generous, description. J-Lo called it 'a bit stop-start'. He also criticised our execution for most of the 1st half and said tht the team didn't do the things they were supposed to do and practised during the week.

TBH, I found the fox making its way across the Western Terrace and onto the cricket pitch the highlight of the 1st half. I was meant to be doing my wife's tax return today - it might have been more entertaining than the game.

At least we stepped up a gear after the winning try and the defence at the end was awesome. Shame it had to take impending defeat to snap us awake. Homer's tackle into touch near the death was fantastic.

I know I'll be back, but at times I sat there and wondered why I bother.

Great post Nos. I think that we are suffering from not having a proper fly-half. No disrespect whatsoever to Pistol Pete, but the game management, when to kick, when to pass, when to go into contact (unless you are J Ford of course) was not on par with our position in the league.
Many times we were running the ball out of our own 22, giving the (slightly whistle-happy) ref opportunity to penalise us and for Hartpury's accurate kicker to get 3 points.
I know that kicking possession away does not win you matches, but when the opposition defence realise you are not going to use the kicking option they bring their wingers up and mark your backs man-for-man thus negating your attack.

Agree with JDH. What a miserable performance? Can't imagine that loyal fans took much away from that? We made Hartpury look good...and they probably deserved the win? What is the point in saying "good defence"...more like desperate defence from putting ourselves under unnecessary pressure?

The line out started to go awry at Scarborough and definitely functioned poorly today. The stats speak for themselves. Our attacking rugby is definitely in the doldrums...we were lethargic. There seems to be a lack of focus and galvanised leadership both on and off the pitch......Where, indeed, was the purpose, energy and direction in that game?

Is it simply being 'starved of adequate funding'...or just a lack of ideas, belief and enterprise? Is this the team that I came to watch in the Premiership? Obviously not. There was occasionally some good energy and ideas up on the East coast last week...but by comparison that was definitely a sad performance through out? Sorry to sound negative...perhaps someone could furnish me with the positives!?

Positives:
1) We won
2) Good defence
3) We are a clear 3rd in the table
4) We played badly but still won - sign of a good team

I thought it was dire, you wouldn't have thought they were the team one notch above Roth. We need Homer on from the start, whether Davies, Irvine or even Lucock is outside him. We need to keep hold of the ball when we have it and not kick it away or throw it forward. In the end we scrambled well enough in defence and had one break which paid off, but no-one will be worried about coming here. Just as well that it doesn't really matter.

Why don't they watch the u18s tries and see some decent offensive play.
These are professional players and you get that? Not one 80 min performance this year or last for that matter. Harpbury can move the ball with options dummy runners missed passes etc. We stand in a flat line and pass it very slowly down the line. It's absolutely pi$$ poor and if they ain't doing what Jimmy wants then leave em out of the team any play someone else, even the uni lads.

And we'll done homer for that tackle it was class.

How we are sitting nicely in 3rd place is perplexing. There has been some real quality rugby from our visitors, but little from ourselves, yet we are grinding out wins and the table doesn’t lie.

Does it say that the players don't want to or will not obey instructions. Is it because they are not happy with the situation or are ready to move on next season

I think starting homer and Davies would help. Lucock 12 and Fred at 13 from what I saw today as they have better all round game. Get one of the young 9s and callum on the bench. Get the wingers ghosting around the corner tracking the runners. There 14 did that well today.

I can't help thinking that a specialist 10 rather than a good centre playing out of position might've helped the backline function bettter. The fly half selection question was put to J-Lo after the game and he seemed a bit evasive about his reasoning.

Another thing that one of the commentators mentioned was poor body language and a lack of anyone rallying the troops e.g. when we were back in our half waiting for Davies to kick at goal.

One of my few visits to Headingley. At the end I concluded that the entrance cost would have been better spent in the Cardigan Arms!

First half was abysmal, Hartpury easily the better side but not by much! The highlight was watching two pigeons chasing each other. The second half was not much better with only a couple of memorable moments. The McColl try and Homer last ditch tackle late on that effectively saved the team from an embarrassing loss.

I just wonder what happens on the training field. The efforts involved in turn over ball thrown away by handing the ball back to the opposition. I don't think I saw a single pass where a player was running onto the ball. All very static all very flat. Kicking out of hand was awful. Enough said! Totally frustrated. Surely the players and coaches must look at themselves and say "we are better than this!"

My family have been season ticket holders for around 10 years, but it is not easy to find the time to come and watch when every game I have been to has been like this. I don't think we will be renewing for next season. I feel sad thinking this as we have been quite strong supporters.

I remarked to my lad yesterday that last time JL was in charge our running rugby was amazing. He pointed out that at that time we had Glynn Hughes, some guy called Lozowski etc. We have decent players now, but perhaps not the star quality to occasionally spark some magic or maybe not the ability to coach it in this group.

The offie twitter has confirmed that our first try was actually by Richard Mayhew.

Did anyone notice that the Black Sheep handpump in the Carnegie Cafe Bar had " Greene King IPA" written on it? Did the change of badge have an effect on the real ale drinking experience, I wonder?
As a teetotaller I cannot comment, over to you, Albert, Pudsey Pete etc...

I took it at face value and assumed they had changed beers. Greene King IPA is one of the few that I won't touch so I made do with a Guinness.

Thanks for responding, Albert, but isn't it a pity that Guinness do not sponsor the Championship? The whole point of sponsorship is to get your product sold and as Greene King have been the only brewery to offer help to our "lost" division, do you not think that morally you should drink the stuff?
Or is it that bad?

I spent three years dodging it at university and am not about to start drinking it now. I don't think morality comes into it and the massively acquisitive Greene King can manage very well without any contribution from me!
