Dear me.........

Didn't we have white cards originally for the sinbin, with yellow and red used as in footballball?

How about some consistancy from the irb on how refs are to use red & yellow cards would be nice before we go down this route!

Richie McCaw welcomes new moves re the breakdown. "Get the tackler out of the way". (Sm22)(Sm22)etc

More copping out from refs, brilliant.

Am I reading this right that, for instance, Chris Ashton would have been white carded against us then 5 minutes later the TMO would have told Barnes to send him off?

As with all IRB crazy mandates I can see the logic but really has any of their previous meddling actually improved the game? Why can't they just leave the rules alone?

I read it that 1 week later they would have decided that he should have been sent off, and not during the game.

Yes this is perhaps the most pointless invention of the IRB yet. The white card basically allows a referee to cite a player without awarding a penalty against them, if he is not sure they did it.

Since any missed foul play would be picked up by the citing officer after the game anyway, with all of his access to TV replays from multiple angles, the scheme is entirely a waste of time.

I think the white card is generally good idea; when there is a pile up of bodies where the ref is clear something has gone on, he can give a penalty, but also flag the incident for further investigation to determine if a harsher sanction was warranted and who precisely the offender is.

It might have affected the two Tuilagi/Ashton incidents, in that Tuilagi have been sent off and Ashton placed on report for the first, and the other way round for the second incident, because part of the sequence of events was clearly seen and the rest wasn't.

Assuming that on either occasion the referee and his TJ actually saw what happened and acted on it rather than simply making it up because the didn't, Andrew.

So presuming this is just to cite a player and not the TMO-send-off-later idea, just how is it any different to what happens now? Ref sees a red card incident: He sends player off. Ref doesn't see red card incident: It's dealt with afterwards.

So what's the point?

Nobody can legislate for the myopia of the officials.

Re: A third card for refs to award
SK 88 21 February, 2012 11:43
?

I don't understand the point of this card.

If a ref sees a red card offence he will still send a player off.

If he doesn't he still won't send a player off.

There is no point whatsoever.

It's intended to allow refs to bottle it isn't it? So more citings and summary convictions in the complete absence of actual evidence beyond the opinion of the unaccountable, faceless citing officers.

Perhaps I am mistaken, but I read it as a way of expanding the TMO's remit to include suspected foul play. And that the ref can then be informed during subsequent play.

If so, then there is a legitimate argument in its favour.

Re: A third card for refs to award
SK 88 21 February, 2012 13:09
That is what I thought as well, so a ref would "go up stairs" for who threw a punch whilst play went on then bin/red him 2 minutes or however long later. But some people seem to think its just a citing in real time. One has merit if still another encouragement for referees to bottle it, one is just a waste of trees to make the white cards!

(Sm22) (Sm22) (Sm22) (Sm22) (Sm22)

Go on. Tell me. This is April 1st come early?

How will the ref get this card out of his pocket as he runs around?

As I understand it, the person reviewing the game (citing officer) can look at anything and everything already so how's this change anything?

Apart from letting refs bottle out of giving yellow or red cards during a game!!

Stupid. Next they'll be getting rid of one prop to give a frontrow of just 2!!

No ... see mine and SK 88's posts. If our interpretation is correct then clearly it is a change.

I don't think the citing officers have the time to look at everything that goes on in a match, this allows the ref to bring an incident to their attention.

Within the realms of current practice I go with these two

However, I'd prefer to review the whole ethos:

09.50 Chris's review, my post:

Among the great things about rugby are it's complexity, and how it reflects life [discuss? ], life being multi-faceted and so often unfair yet has to be got on with - arbitration, even were every minutest decision to be referred to the t.m.o., will never be precise, and justice is subjective, so far better to step back from the overly, I.R.B. rule-obsessed attempts [or tongue in cheek panel of judges] to sanitise this pivotal role and return to the days of whatever the ref sees, goes, and if he had a big lunch, well, so what .. whatever goes around comes around, and perhaps with professionalism we put too much weight on winning and too little on performance [yes, I HATE to lose], and if we truly know the game [see that? GAME!] was won but for the extra pint a linesman had, well, that's life, that's rugby

... but, ka ora, ka mate I hear you say, and you'd be right, probably, but what is life if sterilised?*

'Profit Motive' .. the Vaseline of genocides.

'Reality' .. the new cynicism

Fair enough DW.

But the ref will spend all game waving a white card and how can "getting more consistancy" be achieved by putting another set of decision makers in the process?
