Just to let you know that the refurbishment work is not going how I wished. I got some Lithuanians in who were c.r.a.p. Then some British workers who were also c.r.a.p. I 've decided to do it myself as all workers are c.r.a.p. I really need to speak to BOD as he seems to have found some workers who aren't c.r.a.p. But then again it's all a middle class conspiracy to undermine British workers (who are all c.r.a.p. BTW) and replace them with EU nationals or Australians (who are also all c.r.a.p. BTW).

Now for a nice cup of tea.

Now the nights are drawing in again I thought I'd try a nice warming mug of cocoa and check in the loft for any left over Christmas cards .. getting in such a sombre mood frees me to wallow in misery at the thought we still don't know who will be staffing the Empire Tea Rooms when they open up again .. though a shot of brandy could inspire the excitement of being able to speculate on just how good the service will be .. there's nowt quite like the mocking cheer that goes up when a tray of cups goes crashing, and the smug, self-satisfaction that comes from tutting, knowing you would never have been so clumsy

The shortening days begin with my birthday, England are usually out of the roundball World Cup / Euros and / or the Lions / England have usually been humped down under somewhere. In fact on one of my birthdays God appeared in Mexico and helped the ball the ball into the England net. Clearly, He deems I would not do heaven's work well, I think I'm destined to stand in the fiery furnaces of Scunthorpe Steelworks...

Ah! But is such a fatalistic view factual?

... could it be your original allocation of days was extended when you showed great moral fortitude by not betraying the trust shown in you by the Empire Tea Rooms hierarchy regarding confidential information, despite enormous pressure from clamouring pekoe pursuants?

... or the time you actually bought a round of coffees even though your hand clasped your purse shut in an iron-like, instinctive, Yorkshire grip, and your brain fought hard to hide the combination needed to open it from your conciousness?

Ultimately you may be greeted only by the 'Closed' sign, but perhaps the [second hand] tea service you once thought adequate for life might need replacing with a new one .. or at least need gluing?

I think that the existing staff might not be quiet as bad as we all think.
Maybe with a bit of training during the closure, and some new direction, and management next year, the service levels might just improve to new levels, without the need for lots of new staff, who might not really know how the Empire Tea Rooms should really please the customers ?

I'm sure that the existing staff with some redirection and re-motivation will do very well. But, there are still too few staff to cover all shifts that the tea rooms need to be open. And if only a few specialist folk could be added to the staff then this would take some pressure off the existing staff, particularly those who are uncomfortable with certain duties as they know that they aren't as good at them as they should be in a top quality tea rooms.

Just to let you know that the temporary (they're all temporary) Australian barista is testing my patience already. He's managed to upset the Health and Safety officer. Apparently noise at the workplace issues seem to have driven many of the long established staff away and we're awaiting claims as we speak for compensation. Still I'm hopeful that he'll bring in a new lot of employees that are a little less fragile and we certainly have one or two waiters that can only be described as really good waiters. However, they seem to do a bit of moonlighting in the evenings for a coffee room down the road that's got reputation for prawn sandwiches that I just can't compete with so their presence is not always certain.

Since I am currently distant by some considerable mileage from my usual, comfortable source of hot, steaming comfort {oo er Matron!}[awaiting the arrival of yet another grand daughter (Sm50)], I have had to resort to trying Asda's Extra Special Italian Style Instant Coffee measuring 4 on Roast Strength scale of 1 to 5; it is indisputably, for aficionados of instant coffee, surprisingly good - strong without bitterness and fulsome in it's flavour.

I would never have considered buying it myself, partly because you're more likely to find me in Lidl's emporium than Chavda's, partly because I tend to stick with what I know; but it has thus become crystal clear to me that I do not know all there is to know about instant coffee.

It would seem there is knowledge out there that has hitherto not breached the bubble surrounding my little world, so I must consider that sometimes there are people at large whose awareness of alternatives to those which are my rock might just be worth a try, especially if I may benefit from them, directly or otherwise.

If that involves them creatively, positively interpreting the Health and Safety regulations, as long as they don't actually fit flammable cladding [nobody would be that callous, would they] I may be prepared to listen before I shout, Fire!'

Congrats OSV.

I was thinking recently of this guy who used to come into the Empire and complain endlessly that the Peruvian blend wasn't as good as the Ethiopian. I did value his opinion but really couldn't do anything about it in the short term as I'd signed quite a long contract with my beans supplier. Hey ho. Even when I started asking about the muffins and whether they were ok he'd bang on about the Peruvian stuff. I said 'hold on I'm asking about the muffins'. 'I know' he said 'but that Peruvian stuff's carp'. He came in recently and looked about and saw my refurbishment plans (coming along quite nicely but I'm still a bit short of staff especially if one were to drop hot water on themselves)) but all he went on about is the Peruvian stuff again. Well my Aussie mate chucked him out. Strange though I still do miss him. And to be honest the Peruvian stuff was horrible.

Some seem to think it's a slippery slope to start chucking people out. Their mates might not like it and stop coming and enjoying the fair on offer too. Personally though I think your Aussie manager probably got it right on this occasion. Whilst I am quietly reading my newspaper in the corner of the emporium and enjoying a strong drop of Assam I don't want to be disturbed by someone banging on about the carp Peruvian coffee, in which I have no particular interest and prevents me from concentrating on the crossword.

Just bought 1kg of Garraways best Colombian for 9. Decided I might as well buy B grade (but nice) in bulk rather than pay 4-6 for A* from people like Union. At the end of the day, for us cafetiere people, anything other than A* is wonkily variable, although Waitrose Colombian Special is good for 3.50 (or ess if on offer). PS don't buy Orangutan band, it's pants.
