Changes for Northampton?
nickthesarrie 26 February, 2012 10:48
Hi there,

This is my first topic on here but I've been a Saracens fan for about 10 years, so I know my stuff!

I was just wondering what people think we can do to turn around our fortunes for the Sinners game this Sunday? I'm praying that Steve's back as he will both sure up the scrum and leadership which we were missing in those dying moments at Worcester (it was a long journey home). Hopefully Jacques can't be too long way from a return...

So, with a week to go, what do people think? Change in front row? I'd like to see NDK and Spencer as our two SH's, not Stringer personally.

Re: Changes for Northampton?
Convex Hull 26 February, 2012 11:10
Looking at Burger's tweets on the 'fish' yesterday, it looks like he is still some way from being fit.

Joubert is usually just as sharp as Throbwick when it comes to captaincy, but I do hope that we have him back for next week.

Re: Changes for Northampton?
ChrisR 26 February, 2012 11:11
I would start with Gill and Nieto, especially if Steve is back, Smit is just not in the groove at loosehead currently and would rather use him as reserve hooker, with Brits starting.

We need Borth's back, as I still don't think the BUrg is fit, the back row will stay the same.

Behind the scrum hopefully Tagi is fit, I would move Wyles to inside centre and play Short on the other wing.

Saints only 4 points behind us now - think I'll send my substitute (daughter) next week; I might have a heart attack if I'm there.(Sm124)

Re: Changes for Northampton?
FezUnite 26 February, 2012 16:18
I'd go with;

Gill
Brits
Nieto
Borthers (if fit)
Kruis
Melck
Saull
Joubert
NdK
Hodgson (if released)
Short
Powell
Wyles
Tagi
Goode

George
Smit
Stevens (if released, otherwise Petrus)
Smith
Wray
Spencer
Mordt
Tomkins

Re: Changes for Northampton?
ChrisR 26 February, 2012 16:43
Getting really tight at the top, the top 4 might already be decided but Glaws are threatening as they did last season.

Must win game for us.

Re: Changes for Northampton?
McSaracens 26 February, 2012 21:28
If Charlie is released then I would like to see a backline of:

De Kock
Hodgson
Short
Mordt
Wyles
Tagi
Goode

Adam Powell just hasn't impressed me in the past two games and while I doubt he will be dropped I would prefer us to play with a second flyhalf in Mordt. It would fit in line with playing Farrell in the centres and would add a kicking option. Add into that IMO Nils is a better 12 than 10.

As for the pack we desperately need Borthwick back to add some ballast to the pack. Apart from that I would hope to see Gill get a start over the struggling Smit and bring the ever reliable Melck into the backrow. So something like:

Gill
Brits
Nieto
Borthwick (c)
Kruis
Melck
Saull
Joubert

Not sure it'll be enough though and suspect we may well be third by the LV= break!

Re: Changes for Northampton?
Hoggers 27 February, 2012 10:32
Hoep Borths is fit, we need a leader on the pitch desperately. Againsy Wuss 5 mins tro go 5 points behined we get a kickable pen. What do we do go for the corner... bad mistake. Also I would start with Rhys, Carlos and Schalk.Hodgson if released. Not a MUST win but in trouble I think if we lose.

Re: Changes for Northampton?
McSaracens 29 February, 2012 07:44
IIRC England usually announce their released players on Wednesday. Hopefully Charlie will be in the mix for Sunday.

I would like to see their under 11's fly half play as well. Oh and I would like to see Alan "slow hands" Dickins at scrum half....(Sm100)

Re: Changes for Northampton?
Hoggers 29 February, 2012 12:00
Would like a win please .... Borths is needed as we were short of a leader on the pitch last week once Joubert went off. Also a key point brought up by Brian Mooore this week re unnecessary substitutions. One comment I would make is a simple one; If the game plan is working do not change it and DO NOt make substitutions just for the sake of it as they definitely change the games normally for the worst !!!!!

And according to the Offy's Facebook post: "Alex Goode was feeling a little under the weather at the end of training this morning" and had to drop out of the live broadcast this afternoon (replaced by Joe Maddock).

Hope the bug hasn't hit Alex as well.

Seriously, that is bad news indeed. Scrap training for the rest of the week and keep all the players well apart!

Re: Changes for Northampton?
McSaracens 29 February, 2012 18:46
Yep, we have Matt and Charlie released. Northampton have Dowson, Clark, Lawes, Doran-Jones and Foden available.

(OK, I made the Foden bit up)

Not holding out too much hope for Sunday. Think we'll do well to get a bonus point, although I'm hoping that having two quality playmakers in Goode and Hodgson will help us.

Re: Changes for Northampton?
Convex Hull 29 February, 2012 21:26
I thought that Sarries may lose the last two matches, but for some irrational reason expect them to put up a fight on Sunday.

Of course, if they have a lot of key players out sick, on top of the current woes, then it will be hard.

You are Champions, you are at home, you are favourites!! Don't start trying to wriggle out of it. Good to get a few scraps thrown back from the RFU though.

Re: Changes for Northampton?
Convex Hull 29 February, 2012 21:57
Wriggle out of what? Have you seen a single complaint on this board following the last two defeats? The most fervent and compelling reasons for Sarries' losses came from the Worcester coach, Richard Hill, not from Sarries.

The fact of the matter is the team that will be on the pitch on Sunday is a far cry from what will be on the pitch in the HC QF or the AP playoffs.

Re: Changes for Northampton?
Saint Morrissey 29 February, 2012 22:13
I remember the same situation last season when we were trying to compete on all fronts and supplying international players. many told us to get on with it which frustrated the hell out of me. we ran out of steam. Not starting a fight, my original comment was a little leg pull.

Re: Changes for Northampton?
Convex Hull 29 February, 2012 22:29
Oh for the luxury of just four players away on international duty, it is injuries that are hurting Sarries.

(Apparently Farrell is also sick now)

PS I know from your previous posts that you were not entirely serious; many Sarries supporters don't expect a win on Sunday, but the damage was done by poor game management and inexperience against two teams that were less formidable than Northampton imho.

Re: Changes for Northampton?
Saint Morrissey 29 February, 2012 22:39
Hartley, Lawes, Dickson, Dowson, Foden, Ashton, have all been involved and missed games. Doran-Jones as cover and Wood is injured along with Clarke. Obviously we've had a few returned but they may struggle to get in the team! May have a decent bench though (Sm100)

Re: Changes for Northampton?
Convex Hull 29 February, 2012 22:41
Lawes has a potential injury too, right?

Re: Changes for Northampton?
Saint Morrissey 29 February, 2012 23:05
Yeah, shin apparently. The way the pack played last sunday makes it hard to walk straight back in. I think he'll be on the bench and do the final 20-30. Our pack is so much stronger this season which is great. The likes of DJ,Manoa, Waller, Nutley Haywood(injured) have bolstered us very well. Add Pisi who is fast developing into a bit of a hero up here and things are going OK. Still a tough ask to get to the top of the pile. Hope we make the final as I'm taking a coach load to the final whatever happens!!

Re: Changes for Northampton?
Hoggers 01 March, 2012 09:54
Personally really glad to see Charlie released and am sure he will conme straight in at 10. Also if Smit is ill then that could be a bonusfor us as imo he's not playd at his best recently. Front row will be an immense battle. I would like to see Carlos,Schalk and Rhys starting. Jamie and matt on the bench I think.
It will be close and a good game I think, weather is set fair. Also I hope Noah gets a start for Saints as it will be good to see him back at VR.
