My heart sinks whenever I see Tempest's name as the whistler - he seems to have less empathy that most other referees and any chance of a flowing game has gone west.

A genuine question rather than a dig at anyone, is there any ref are actually happy with or feel does a good job?

Feels like every one of these threads is always followed by comments about how the ref is no good or has done us over before.

Personally, although they are all human and make the odd mistake, I think they all do a tremendous job. I'd challenge any of the armchair refs on this or any other board, to do a better job. At the last game I invested in the ref link thingy, and it's a real education hearing the ref explain his decisions to the players, either while play continues or after he has stopped it for an offence - I recommend it to any who doubt the refs' ability.

I think Barnes, Carley, Doyle and Pearce nearly always do a good job and Maxwell-Keys is getting there. They all make mistakes of course, but they all seem to me to share a desire to see the game flow, which makes for a better spectacle.

Some of the others, for example Foley and Tempest seem to me to have a more 'stacatto' style, and don't hesitate to stop the game whenever and wherever they see an offence.

I know there are more factors at play than just the refereeing decisions, but it would be interesting to see referees ranked by 'ball in play minutes'.

Roger... Like you I have a Ref Link... it has certainly helped reduce my criticism of some of the Ref's decisions (Sm100)

The only Ref I have an issue is Tom Foley, he just needs to make a decision and stick to it and not rely totally on his Assistants or TMO, Tempest seems fairly good to me, there is a possibility we can beat Exeter they may be grinding out wins but they are not convincing (barring the Anglo Welsh game v Scarlets)

Isn't Tempest the idiot who, despite watching the replay God know how many times, sent Barrington off in the same game last season when everyone said it should have been Brad....if anyone.

Perhaps he's been to Specsavers in the meantime....but Brad had better be careful that Tempest doesn't try to correct matters this weekend

I'm not such a fan of him as a ref, but he does have an awesome surname

Roy is an excellent AR. He always knew all the laws and still does. His problem as a ref was his inability to command players' respect. Now he only has to speak to the ref, he is a great asset to the game.

In that instance, you could argue it should have been a double red. All the referee was doing was carrying out the instructions he had been given with the new directives. If that makes the law an a s s then so be it, but that doesn't make the referee an idiot.

I personally don't think any of the Prem refs are poor - however, if anyone can tell me why Marius Mitrea continues to get European Cup games then let me know. I think he's poor. Ben Whitehouse is still learning, so maybe his shocker in Clermont was a one-off. Very amusing to watch and listen to, but not great refereeing.
