I couldn't agree more.

I sat in front of Nigel (at least until he moved at half time) at the game and he did not look happy, even before a ball had been kicked or handled.

It amazes me how many professional sports bodies seem to have amateur standards of management. If I were running a club like Sarries or Clermont I'd be fed up with the amateur managing body too.

Saracens had it easy compared to Neath many years ago.

The interesting one for EPCR to answer is what has happened to the Match Commissioner. He is the person responsible for the operation of the fixture, so will have had direct liaison with the governing body.

Or he SHOULD have done. And the clubs SHOULD have gone through him.

If they didn't feel they could, or there wasn't one appointed, then that's a much bigger governance issue for EPCR.

That's a blast from the past, Rupes. It's been a while since I heard of one of them.

Did the match commissioner disappear with the change of governance over the competition?

They still exist! Certainly in football with UEFA (which is the sweetest gig going, if you get the right match), with the RFL, with the PL Football and I suspect EPCR/Prem Rugby as well.

Their roles have changed over the years, for sure, but they still exist.

I must admit, I do wonder if a so-called smaller rugby club such as (insert name of club you want to wind up here) would have behaved in the same way as Saracens and Clermont, in terms of firing off at the competition organisers.

I don't doubt what Nigel says about EPCR mucking things up in this instance, but I'm puzzled by this comment, in which he seems to dismiss the whole principle of having governing bodies:

"My views on organisations like EPCR and the RFU is that they’re all chaotic. I don’t think they work and this is another example of why."

Nigel was a leading voice in getting rid of the previous Heineken Cup organising body (a creature of the Unions) and setting up the new body (EPCR) a creature of the clubs. He got what he wanted, but now he seems to be saying he doesn't want it!

Baffling. He needs to say how he would prefer to see these tournaments organised if he doesn't like the way it's done now (despite him being a leading player in setting it up).

IIRC the set up of EPRC was a bit of a compromise, removing the unions from the equation and replacing them with the league bodies, but largely retaining the internal admin structures, and many of the staff, of the Heineken. I think Nigel would've been in favour of an even more radical shake-up at the time.

I don't think that's what he's saying at all. He's simply saying they're chaotic (hard to argue against) not that he doesn't want them. He's saying he doesn't want them to be chaotic! Which frankly is pretty reasonable. More of a call to buck their performance up.

I could without fear of contradiction say the government is chaotic; doesn't mean I don't want the government smoking smiley

Now there's a topic best left un-discussed on these boards!! (Sm137)

Plainly that is not what he said. What he said (paraphrasing) is that they are necessarily chaotic, that it is in the nature of the beast. They can't be necessarily chaotic and yet not chaotic!

Perfectly happy to agree to disagree but your interpretation doesn't resonate with me.

What we can all agree on is that no one and in particular EPCR, came out of this episode smelling of roses.
