Sarries on Tour & SSA
McSaracens (IP Logged)

Excuse my ignorance but slightly baffled as to why we seemingly have two seperate supporter groups at the club now; as a member of neither group can anyone explain the differences? My understanding is the SSA is the official supporter branch, to my mind surely Sarries On Tour merely weakens this position; although maybe not as they appear to have driven an increase in away support. Certainly Sarries On Tour are very prominent on social media channels.

Could one day we see the two supporter branches merge & therefore surely strengthen their respective positions?

Just curious to everyone’s thoughts? I’m sure we have members of either/both on here so just interested as to how people feel.

Very interesting The Bard, wasn’t aware of that I must say.

FFFFez, hadn’t thought of it like that. My point excluded this as a message board, SOT and the SSA appear to do very similar jobs in my eyes, organising supporter travel and ticketing, I’m sure there are other activities arranged but that would be at their core.

Used to be a member of the SSA and went on the occasional bus trip to away games but it lapsed when they didn't remind me it needed renewing.

As for Sarries on Tour, I know nothing against them but I despise social media, and I'm fed up with people going on about SoT (I instinctively reject hype).

Basically I just don't care how many Sarries supporters are going to an away game, where they are sitting, or whether I will be anywhere near them. Very happy doing my own thing.

As far as i am aware the easiest way to describe the difference would be that SoT purely works on away games where as the SSA also do things things at home and put on other events throughout the season.

Re: Sarries on Tour & SSA

Further to the above.
One has to pay a fee to join the SSA and therefore become a member.
SoT is not something that one joins as such, it is a loose grouping of folk who support Sarries. There is no membership fee. There are some organisers who arrange tickets to away games and some social functions. Anyone can join in with their arrangements.

I have heard it said that there has been some movement of organisers from one group to the other, and perhaps some disagreements on a personal level at some point in the past. (In my experience of volunteer groups in all walks of life this is nothing unusual.)

So, as ever, one pays ones money (or not) and takes ones choice.

As the events coordinator for the SSA I shall try and explain..

The SSA are the official supporters association and recognised as such by the club. We allow anyone to join for a membership fee of £10 seniors £5 juniors. This will allow entry to all our events over the season. These include coaches reviews player evenings guest speakers quiz night and so on. We have authorised merchandise which often is used to raise funds for the foundation of which we are not only patrons but committed fundraisers. Our aim is to increase awareness of saracens and all it does in a positive way to help build the atmosphere and support the team. This includes meeting with the supporter associations of all our opponents. We are insured, covered by the DPA and produce accounts and are fully transparent in our dealings. The AGM is available for anyone to visit. We have also recently started to handle away allocations on behalf of the club and aim for the best seats at a reasonable price. We have monthly newsletters and a digital database which allows us now to better communicate with our 600 members

SoT were set up by Fraz when he left the SSA for personal reasons. Their aim is to get the cheapest tickets to allow those on a budget to travel. They are unofficial and have stated they want no part in the official activities of the club. They are a closed group and can chose who they allow to join. They tend to organise pub based meet ups pre match and yes concentrate on UK away games only.

As mentioned earlier ASM have 13 association's and so I see no harm in us having 2! We have attempted to work with SoT however their desire to remain unaffiliated prevented this from going any further.

I always find Sarries supporters in the bars, many of whom (maybe some of you on here) recognise me and vice versa. The pre- and post-match are the important bits when it comes to socialising. Couldn't care less who I'm sitting with in the stadium (in fact I enjoy rubbing shoulders with oppo fans) and I don't share travel arrangements (been let down and messed around too often).

For clarity the SSA no longer arrange travel. Just events when you get there such as Searsons in Dublin The three sister and Harrys in Edinburgh and the party at cafe pascal in Clermont. We are also working on 3 events for the new year.

As I said we are keen to mingle with fans at away games that's why we meet at the ground not off site. We also host away support and generate revenue such as Warriors last season and the curry for 200 for the home game V and sadly lost to the weather.

And for the record the Fez boys are very active members of the SSA and had our full support for their 21st celebration s at the sale home game this season

Firstly, not an SSA member, but am with SOT. Not a clue in fezboys so won’t cover them

I would certainly back the POV that if you quizzed everyone in the Fb group, we’d take the SSA at home, SOT away as the primary difference.

While the admins (not merely one) could in theory limit who joins I haven’t heard via the other communications/2nd hand of anyone who has been blocked.

I think you’d struggle to say the support has been weakened by the division , though it would be nice if the leadership of each was on good terms (not following this, this is a non targeted desire)

A little concerned by a few surprisingly hostile posts above.

They both do tremendous jobs in my opinion, SoT is a non profit non official group who want to remain that way and they have a group of 200 of us sitting together for Exeter in march, which is great, SSA also I'd say are non profit but as far as I'm aware are definitely official... As stated both do tremendous jobs and makes rugby home and away very enjoyable and for us fans that live too far away now to come to every game (like I used to season ticket holder for the past 8 years) it's a great way to meet like minded fans have a few beers and enjoy a game of rugby together with other Sarries fans and other fans from other teams, long may it continue

Also nothing wrong with making your own arrangements (rustysword) but if you want to be with Sarries fans at away trips then these groups are vital in my opinion,

I enjoy and admire the work of both groups and they are certainly not there to undermine each other

Sarries for Life! happy new year all

I don't believe the Sarries on Tour group is a closed one. In terms of it's Facebook page it may be described as 'Closed', but that is just Facebook terminology - just ask to join the Facebook page and you are in. They also use Twitter and Instagram - again, just follow along. (One also has the option to stop following should that be your wish.)

Not suggesting anyone would be rejected. I am myself in the Sarries on Tour group. I am a member of the SSA, and indeed still have a SSA scarf from the days when Rupert Holt ran it. I have known many of the Fezboys for many years, although never worn a Fez myself.

I am not in the Fezboys 21st nor have I asked to be, nor am I expecting an invitation! I'm just having a joke at Steve Cummins's expense, as he was the one who described SOT as a closed group, and he is, I believe, in Fezboys 21st anniversary group, who are themselves a closed group.

A little joke at Steve's expense, nothing more.

The struggle is very real, after all. Good thing nobody gets, or wants to be seen to get irony on this board....

I have never been a member of SSA but I have used SoT and follow them on facebook and think they have revitalised the club´s away support which was previously fairly small and usually the same faces week in week out.

The main point of SoT that I can see is that they get group bookings so that fans are seated together and can try and coordinate some vocal support. This has certainly not gone un-noticed by the players who have commented numerous times on the away support since SoT has been going. It is not not uncommon to hear Sarries fans on the TV when watching away games which was not the case before. The other point, which is an added bonus, is that they secure significant discounts directly from the other clubs so saving fans money as well.

More people than ever are following Sarries at away games and that can only be a good thing in my opinion.

Right, as long as the Sale Away game doesn't get moved to Friday night, I will join SoT. I have used PayPal once before - I bought a surplus ticket from a Quins fan and we hammered them at the Stoop!

I was surrounded by Quins fans and it became quite uncomfortable. I took two pints to my seat at kick-off, and again for the second half - "I say, don't you have a butler for that sort of thing?"!

I have some questions for SoT.

- Who from the dozens of sponsors of Calum Clark gets the places in the 100 Club which come with player sponsorship? Or do those who run it get them? Are those who put in the money aware and willing? Are they offered in the first place?

- Likewise, some away clubs offer free tickets and/or hospitality places as rewards for purchasing above a certain number of tickets. Who gets those? Are they offered to those who purchase through SoT?

- If SoT is so inclusive and for all Saracens fans, why has SoT admin deemed it necessary to block some Saracens fans on its Twitter and Facebook accounts?

- How does SoT introduce itself to other clubs? Does it claim to be some official Saracens entity?

- Does SoT have any constitution, accounts (auditable by those who use it), or insurance?

Warwick Davis will throw Will Skelton over a 50ft wall before I give any money to them.

Bit busy, but some fast replies as a member of SoT.
The organisers sit with the members. Always.
I knew exactly what I was getting when I popped my sponsorship payment through.
Everything was very transparent and 2 members were picked at random to attend the players lunch.
It was pretty unanimous that the organisers attended the first event that was put on for player sponsors. They work really hard to keep the group moving forward!
The organisers are very visible and approachable. They have no ulterior motive.
I didn't know anyone from SoT before I joined.
They have the club's blessing, but are unconnected.
It is a great thing for Sarries. We make a hell of a racket and we have great fun. I take advantage of cheap tickets that I couldn't access otherwise due to bulk booking.

I'm not sure about the other questions.

They have improved my away experience a huge amount!

They probably like the eds on here block any inappropriate behaviour EG player bashing or being disrespectful to other users,

SoT is completely unofficial! It's run by two season ticket holders who yes have a few connections to the club but they do not make any profit from anything they do, the sponsorship of Calum Clark was entirely chosen by it's members who paid collectively for the honour to sponsor a player,

For me it's a great experience and I cannot wait to go to Exeter and sit with Sarries fans, for once at an away game, also looking forward to meeting new people, and because I now live on the Isle of Wight this group is great to see updates on games and how to source tickets for away matches at a better rate than I did it individually

No idea, none of my business if people get blocked.

TMT, surely the bloke who spends his organising the bulk buy of tickets, then has to stand around handing them out on match days deserves a little something once in a while? Is a free ticket really taking the pee?

I’m clearly not affiliated with either group. But if you’re putting that much effort in and making it as easy as sending an email saying, ‘I’ll have an away ticket, see you next week to pick it up.’ There can’t be many complaints if he gets a jolly in hospitality once in a while.
