Champions Cup Seeding

Does the win mean the automatic top seed as an English Club? Given their pool this season, it didn't help Exeter in terms of any 'easy' games.

Can any student of the game forecast possible opponents, or are there too many possible permutations?

Im not actually sure of the seeding method for the top 5 .

Does it take playoff positions over league? How does it split positions between leagues (2 French, 2 AP, 1 pro)

Obvs if it is one pro 14 team that resolves the two-league difficulty

I believe it is standing in the league pre playoff so Exeter , Montpellier and Lienster get top seed along with two out of Saracens, Scarlets and Racing.

I don't know about this season but previously it has always been playoff winners not league standing that has decided it. Unless they've changed it this season then we are a top seed

Unless its changed for next season, performance in the semi and finals out trumps league position, so we should be top seeds with Leinster and whoever wins in France.

From the EPCR website..........

Have to say it is not explicit about what they mean by 'final position' although I would assume it means after yesterday!

Qualification
Champions Cup
Nineteen clubs will qualify automatically for the 2018/19 Champions Cup in the following ways :.

Guinness PRO14 (7): The three highest ranked clubs from each conference. The fourth-ranked clubs from each conference will play off for the seventh place. (NB South African clubs are not eligible.)

TOP 14 (6): The six highest-ranked clubs based on their final finishing positions.

Aviva Premiership (6): The six highest-ranked clubs based on their final finishing positions.

In accordance with a decision of the EPCR Board comprising the nine unions, federations and league bodies, the 20th place in the Champions Cup will be determined as follows:

i) Champions Cup winner, if not already qualified
ii) Challenge Cup winner, if not already qualified
iii) Challenge Cup losing finalist, if not already qualified
iv) Play-off match between the losing Challenge Cup semi-finalists, if not already qualified
v) Highest ranked non-qualified club by virtue of league position from the same league as the Champions Cup winner

Well last year the champions and finalists got drawn in the same group!! (Of Europe)

So the seedings are bizarre however byou look at it

Ultimately if you are a stand-out team such as Leinster were this season you can beat whatever is put in front of you. That was probably the strongest group ever assembled

That's because for some reason the reigning champs don't get top seeding, which makes absolutely no sense. It's purely based on domestic league position.

I wouldn't mind a Trip to Kingsholm , it would be nice to go down there with a full strength team outside the international window for a change. Anyone know when the draw is taking place ? It usually comes around extremely quickly after the season is done. I've no idea if the seeding will allow but a trip to the new Racing Metro ground would be good too, and either Edinburgh, Glasgow or Cardiff to round off the group would be my choice.

I think, but you can never be sure with EPRC rules that the 5 teams in Group 4 are Bath, Gloucester, Cardiff, Lyon and Ulster

Did I see somewhere that that is just the groups not any fixtures (weekends that is, as we never find out the actual date until about two weeks before!)?

Don't the Barage winners move ahead of the losers? In which case:

G1: Saracens, Leinster, Castres/Montpellier, + 2 from Exeter, Scarlets, Montpellier/Castres
G2: "missing one from above" + Wasps, Glasgow, Racing + "matching missing one from below"
G3: 2 from Newcastle, Lyon, Munster; + Leicester, Edinburgh, Toulouse
G4: Bath, Gloucester, Cardiff, Toulon, Ulster

No you are only allowed to draw teams from same league in the final round so just Bath or Glouc

No Dave. I think each Pool has one from each league when drawing from groups 1-3, with no Pro14 from the same country when drawing from group 4. Just Glaws or Bath.

With a name like that presumably it will be sponsored by the British Milk Council (formerly Milk Marketing Board)?
