Marleybone retires from International rugby

for personal reasons apparently

Being with England you have to spend an incredible amount of time away and I could not do that any more," he said.
"It is an incredible commitment to play rugby for England and I strongly believe that if you are unable to give yourself fully to it then it is time to step away - otherwise it would not be fair on the team, or my family.

I suspect his much publicised on-off relationship with Eddie Jones may have made the decision a little bit easier for him. Very big and brave decision to step away at such a young age, especially for a prop. No doubt Harlequins will benefit from this in spades.

A big call from him but massive respect for his priorities.
He'd struggled before with some issue so hopefully this gives him the time he needs. All the best to him.

Big call to walk away a year from the RWC. I wouldn’t be surprised or unhappy to see him reappear in a couple of years when hopefully things are sorted out in his life.

Also says a lot about England’s current state. He wouldn’t be doing this if he felt England was in a good place ahead of the RWC next year

I can't help thinking there is something very wrong at the moment in the England camp. This much chopping and changing doesn't bode well.

Difficul;t to put a psitive spin on this for England. They lose a proven international at a time when options are needed, and it really says nothing good about Eddie and his camp.

Wish Joe Marler all the best with Quins and his family, and hope it's not too detrimental to the England cause in the long term

Idiotic piece in the Daily Fail - seemed to think it was a shame he was turning down all that money in RWC year.
Some things are more important than money - be happy and healthy Joe Marler.

The gentlemen of the Press seem to be picking up the idea that at a fundamental level all is not well in the England set-up.

I think the gentleman (?)of the press may have it right this time.At the time I was surprised more wasn't made of Gussie's departure.Very odd time to leave, just before the highlight of any players career (or coach),the Rugby World Cup.

Gussie: "Joe, how are you feeling?",

Marler: "Not too good, boss. Got another sodding England training camp coming up."

G: "You don't have to put up with it. I got out and I feel a lot better".

M: "Good idea, coach. Fancy a pint?"

Allegedly winking smiley

Joe on this weeks Rugby Pod... Very open as to why he made this decision.
Said the stresses of upcoming England games led him to almost look for a red/yellow to cop a ban and make it an easy out!

Big Will Skeleton also in it....

Well worth a listen.
