England Team for SA - now up
GazzaFez (IP Logged)
30 October, 2018 16:52
Only George, Kruis, Itoje and Faz retained. All the rest including Loz released.

So, does that mean that as Loz won't be playing for England now and as EPCR in their wisdom have said he doesn't play for us in the PRC either....his ban gets extended by a further week? Watch this space (Sm22)

England squad retained....

Forwards: Tom Curry (Sale Sharks), Charlie Ewels (Bath Rugby), Jamie George (Saracens), Dylan Hartley (Northampton Saints) co-captain, Alec Hepburn (Exeter Chiefs), Maro Itoje (Saracens), George Kruis (Saracens), Zach Mercer (Bath Rugby), Ben Moon (Exeter Chiefs), Brad Shields (Wasps), Kyle Sinckler (Harlequins), Elliott Stooke (Bath Rugby), Harry Williams (Exeter Chiefs), Mark Wilson (Newcastle Falcons)

Backs: Chris Ashton (Sale Sharks), Danny Care (Harlequins), Elliot Daly (Wasps), Owen Farrell (Saracens) co-captain, George Ford (Leicester Tigers), Jonny May (Leicester Tigers), Jack Nowell (Exeter Chiefs), Henry Slade (Exeter Chiefs), Ben Te'o (Worcester Warriors), Manu Tuilagi (Leicester Tigers), Ben Youngs (Leicester Tigers).

P.S in case you didn't spot it....Brown is out and Ashton is in.

I rate Rhodes with the squad... He is the player you don't want to play against and he is a nuisance all over the park to the opposition.

Ewels Kruis
Curry Morgan Itoje

Youngs Faz Slade Tuilagi

May Ashton

Daly

Well OBVIOUSLY wrong with Morgan but a possible team....

pointless having Ashdon on the bench - either he starts or not at all

Nowell however is a much better bench option - covers 13,11,14,15 and would inject some pace and wriggle with 20 to go

I think it probably prudent for Mike Rhodes not to have his England debut against SA.

On a related note. How likely do we think it is that the RFU might approach McCall and how interested do we think he might be? Obviously the re-signings of the majority of our coaching staff and in particular his words about Sanderson suggest there is a progression system in place. Do we think that he would have any interest in a role outside Saracens or Ireland in the near future? (post RWC)

I think its very likely the RFU road crash will approach Mark. However, who in their right mind would get involved with that lot at HQ? Nobody succeeds in that job. It's a destroyer of reputations. Why put everything you have achieved at risk?

They should approach Mr Baxter at Exeter for the poisoned chalice.

I don't think Smally would actively show interest an International role - I think it's possibly too public for him. I don't think he likes the attention too much. Alex Sanderson does much of the "public" face of the squad rather than him .

Never say never though .

You would say that. I would counter by saying that Ashton is as much a fullback as Mike Brown is a winger........hang on a minute. As it happens he spent the majority of last season playing fullback for Toulon and by all acounts was pretty sucessful at it...top try scorer in the Top14 no less. Nevertheless not an option I would pursue for England.

BTW the word is Zach Mercer will start at number 8.

EG has at last had the balls to drop Brown from the squad. Surprised that Shields is in at the expense of Rhodes, though not unduly unhappy as I sure he would be a target for SA!

I think Jones is desperate to get Shields in the team as England are devoid of effective leaders and he sees Shields as a future captain.

I would have Rhodes in at 6 over Shields atm as haven't seen too much from the latter to know what all the fuss is about so far.

I seem to recall a lot of unpleasantness from McCall's time as a coach in Northern Ireland which was, certainly at one time, likely to make him unlikely to go down that route.

England team is up. Faz starts at 10. Manu is on the bench. No place for Ashton. Far too little experience in this team IMHO. Whole thing looks a bit make shift. It would be a big surprise to me if England win this in all honesty.

England: Elliot Daly; Jack Nowell, Henry Slade, Ben Te'o, Jonny May; Owen Farrell (co-captain), Ben Youngs; Alec Hepburn, Dylan Hartley (co-captain), Kyle Sinckler, Maro Itoje, George Kruis, Brad Shields, Tom Curry, Mark Wilson.

Replacements: Jamie George, Ben Moon, Harry Williams, Charlie Ewels, Zach Mercer, Danny Care, George Ford, Manu Tuilagi.

Not sure it's that bad for Tuilagi...he's back training with them on Sunday, sounds like they're being overly cautious and something was a little tight after training so they're not taking the risk.

Boks to boss upfront but depends on the backline which seems a little disjointed.

I think we will want to run them about and negate the forwards. Two opposing game plans..

But if our forwards get into the game, our backs make the difference. If Boks dominate, that might embolden their backs.

I can't see Boks romping away with it, tbh...

Half time score flatters England.

Teo not defending his channel. Ford to 10, Faz to 12, Te'o off. Ashton on for Nowell. Shields had been poor so far. Itoje to 6 and bring on Ewalls. Sorted.

I thought Farrell had given away a penalty until I saw replay!
People will say England were lucky but when all blacks sneaked home V SA it was fantastic!
Owen ripped ball on our 5 metre line & his last kick was superb!
Our wingers need to learn how to tackle,Daly needs to stop impersonating Mike Brownís passing or lack of it,& what the hell was Shields doing!! Phew! smiling smiley

Ironic having Goodey there as stadium summariser before the game and at halftime. He is streets ahead of the guys Jones picks on front of him.
Nowell to me looks too slow to be an effective winger at this level.

Not the prettiest game but very good win for a first international against a SA team who are mid international season.

I too thought Farrell had given away a pen but on replay clear attempt to wrap. Daly isn't a fullback, if he isn't going to play there for Wasps regularly he shouldn't for England. Team looked a lot better when mercer came on for curry, not that curry was playing badly

If Goode (or Brown for that matter) had played as poorly as Daly they'd be crucified. Dropped balls, failure to give May the ball twice (one a certain try), complete brain freeze not putting the ball out of play in his own 22 at half time - and that's just off the top of my head. Or is he in the side fro 50m penalties?

Daly certainly is one of Englandís first XV, but not at full back currently. He has all the skills needed just needs more experience at the position, only one way to get that experience.

For me being there re Sarries players Kruis had a good game, Farrel too, Maroís yellow card not good but he made up for it in the 2nd half and nearly goat a try similar to the one against Lyon. Jamie when he came on was OK but to be honest I hardly noticed the difference. Generally the scrum looked underpowered, the wings clueless in how to score or pass and Daly useless under the high ball. Need desperately a full back specialist like Alex or Brown. Shields was useless. Generally worryingly there were so many poor passes EJ should make them do simple passing practice every day till next Saturday. Defense generally seemed good but attack (old story) poor.nSlow start, poor 1st half, much enter in 2nd but we have to score tries next week!
