New year - what does the squad need?

Happy New Year!

A slightly forward looking post but given that we can now OFFICIALLY start talking to players, where does everyone believe needs strengthening?

Based on reports in the press & contract lengths it sounds as if a lists of potential outs and ins is as follows:

Out:

Strettle - 1 year deal
Bosh - retirement
Burger - back to RSA
Tolofua - Toulon
Day - retirement
Gray - 1 year deal
Vailanu - Wasps rumoured

Others that I wouldn’t be surprised to see leave could be the likes of Hayden Thompson Stringer, Scott Spurling & one of Henry Taylor/Tom Whiteley.

Rumours ins:

Jack Singleton - Worcester
Elliot Daly - Wasps

For me the key areas to strengthen would be a ball carrying 12 to backup Brad. Ryan Mills would be my first choice. Besides that there was a rugby pass article suggesting Kwagga Smith but not sure on how valid that is.

Where would everyone like to see Sarries strengthen?

I don't see enough up close, is Malins good enough back up at ten, if Loz is a13? Can Bill stay fit? Can we afford a better sub than Earl/Wray? Assuming Singleton is in hooker is done, Tolofua hasn't done what I expected. Wiggy can't live forever. Tight head, can always use another. Would imagine Tolofua Burger and Bosch free up a sizeable lump, rather exciting as with the strength of our squad it's likely to be someone rather talented who comes in

Fearns for burger and vialanu seems a good swap to me. Los to replace Bosch with Goode and malins to back up fly half. Perhaps another 10 might be needed. Goode has Williams and Gallagher as options to move up to 10

A clue of props seems to me to be the only missing bit especially if Koch gets in the boss world cup side

All in all I'm pretty happy with the squad with singleton and fearns coming

Don't feel we need daly

The same Fearns Sarries were in negotiations with before who pulled out late on because he was offered more money from Glaws then pulled out from there because he could get more money in France?

12 is the very obvious issue, otherwise backs are well covered IMO.

I'd really like to see a LH who was genuinely trusted to share the load with Mako maybe that person is already at the club and needs more game time maybe they're not? I think Sarries 100% need a physcial presence in the backrow. I still hope that Vailanu can be that player. He's young and has lots of potential.

In all cases I'd hope the club are either looking at Tier 2 Internationals who are available for more of the season but aren't looking at Internationals at all but rather players who are available all season.

Lots of comments about the fact that the important players are the stars and everything is fine asd long as they come good for the close of the season but for me the point is to continue developing the great club players so if those "stars" aren't available the club is still able to field a great squad.

As subs they don't come much better. Both have shown that, although they are not in Billy's class, they are good options as starters.

The most important thing is that we resign Maro. That still isn’t confirmed.

I believe we need to strengthen our ball carrying back row options and our tight head resources (if we can't secure the services of Christian Judge)

I also think we need more carriers, but also need the players we have to step up and do a bit more work and not rely on Mako and Will exclusively.

We need an openside flanker; Burger leaving and Conlon retiring means that we have Callum and perhaps Ben and perhaps Jackson. I don't think that Sean is ready and I didn't notice anybody else in the Storm game ready to pick up the mantle.

We have an abundance of players who can play blindside but where is our depth at openside?

I think that we also need more props! It seems that we have injury-prone tightheads and Richard isn't quite the same quality as Mako. Look at Exeter who swap two internationals for two more; we can do that on the tighthead but not loose.

12 is a troublesome position; or is it that Brad is irreplaceable? We have struggled without his direction and calming influence in the last 2 games and we need to ensure that we have an appropriate replacement. Loz is great but we need a specialist who can provide us with the same go-forward that Brad does.

We need more ball carrying umph in the back row and we need more cover at Loose head.

Joe Gray has extended, so we have enough hookers.

Sonny Bill Williams could do a job at 12. winking smiley

We could also raid the All Blacks for props once the World Cup is out of the way!

Kwagga Smith would be a brilliant signing for the back row - the spirit of Brits rides again!

Very good post.

I'm with you on all of that. In the backrow I'd still prefer that 8 was reinforced but depending on the player and their skillset there's no reason that can't be a player who also covers blind when Billy is fit/available. Don't forget that Rhodes will play at blind too.

It looks like the club is doing a good job on adding options for the front-row. It sounds like Judge might not stay but he's been good and I have also been impressed with Woolstencroft and I am fascinated to see how he goes with his start tomorrow. Perhaps even more-so than Barritt I simply don't think there are that many (any?) LHs out there like Mako but I so think we need to find an option that can rotate with him a bit more freely. Picking an blinside flanker who carries more might also balance Makos absence in the loose.

12 is an interesting one. Can Griffths stay uninjured long enough to be given a run? If he does will he provide the same line-straightening that Barritt does? If not then either the club will rethink how it plays or they will need to go shopping. I can see a combination like Lozo and Tompkins working out but it would mean a change in how the team plays. My preference would be to try and find a Barritt-a-like. Given if Sarries do that a proven player is likely to be expensive I can see even less reason to hire Daly.

It's interesting you raise that point because that's exactly what our group said. We see Tom Griffiths as the 'best fit' long term replacement for Brad and to take some of the burden in the short to medium term. He's the most physical of our centres (after Brad) but is also a good bit quicker. The obvious problem though is that he's some way off being ready yet and it's all the more frustrating that he's missed so much of the season again through injury. Two recent appearances for Storm will hopefully correct that and if he can get into the PRC team in the coming weeks so much the better. Watch this space.

Yep, he was very impressive for the Storm on Sunday

GazzaFez and Duncan96 have to admit to not really being aware of him prior to DG (I think) mentioning him. Then was absolutely blown away by him in the 7s at the start of the season. Ok, it's basically a different game but you could see that for all his physicality he was also quick and had great hands. Does anyone know have his injury issues been reoccurrences of the same issue or unlucky with a couple of different ones?

Resign Maro on a long term deal and sign a replacement for Barritt are definitely the 2 most important things for us in my opinion.
