Scrums
TOKS (IP Logged)

Last night's game was just the latest example, but thought I'd give this one its own thread.

There is now absolutely no point in having a dominant scrum. Referees are so clueless about what's going on that they just try and orchestrate an equal number of penalties for each team. We should have learned this the hard way two years in a row at Quins where we were unlucky enough to be refereed on both occasions by that absolutely doyen of scrum ineptitude, Craig Maxwell-Keyes.

It's a far better idea to do what Sale did last night, namely to slightly de-power the scrum and give yourself more pace in the back five and more breakdown dynamism in the back row. You'll get an equal number of scrum penalties anyway and you'll have an advantage at the breakdown. If, as last night, the referee decides to award himself an evening off from refereeing the breakdown, that advantage becomes a significant one.
