Players Released

A quick tot up from the Daily Telegraph listing (E&OE) suggests that there are 70 players released from contracts (ie in addition to those retiring or going to a named club) across the 13 teams including Irish.

Numbers as follows:

10 Quins and Leicester
9 London Irish
8 Wuss
7 Bath, Bristol and Gloucester
5 Saints
3 Sale and Wasps
1 Sarries (Schalk Burger)
0 Exeter and Newcastle

The overall number of Outs at Leicester makes BV's cull look small beer
There are some famous names in the list (Matt Mullan, Brendan O'Connor.

I know that some of these will be mutual consent pre-retirement moves, but that list looks a lot larger than I can recall happening in previous years.

That Sarries number doesn't look right if you compare with the great piece of work that Barty II has done. He has players leaving as;

- 5 released (McIlroy, Day, Nay, Gliksten and Griffiths)
- 3 retired (Burger, Conlon and Strettle), with Bosch stepping down a level into semi retirement.

Or am I getting the wrong end of the stick? There does appear to be a general reduction in squad sizes both at Sarries and across the board. At the moment we have 18 leaving and 6 joining before academy promotion announcements.

I don't think you are getting hold of the wrong end of the stick. I think there looks to be a general reduction in squad sizes. My recollection is that generally these lists just about balance the Ins and Outs (across all clubs) - maybe slightly more retirements.

This year there seem to be far more Outs than Ins and this seems to be by releasing players to a greater degree than previously the case. Cap biting?

As regards Sarries, the DT lists Dom Day as retiring (which I think is correct). The other 4 are not mentioned and I assume this is because they are slightly off the journos radar as I think all academy players. I assume the DT figures are similarly short in regard to other clubs.

I understand that Leicester have desiststed from treating their academy players like Flashman's fags! They have some ready to graduate to the senior squad winking smiley
