Well, the Telegraph article from yesterday says...

Quote:
It is thought that McGeechan's new role will allow Meehan to concentrate solely on playing matters, with the 63-year-old Scot also acting as a sounding board for the head coach.

So Geech will be concentrating on everything else like recruitment, media & contracts.

Can only be a good thing, as far as I can see.

Re: Ian McGeechan

Bitter? No.
Suspicious - perhaps.
Who is the top dog now at BFC? Who makes the final decision regarding playing matters, player recruitment, coaching and support personel, tactics and game plans?
Whoever has Bruce's ear I guess.
As Bruce's first major senior appointment since taking over I can only conclude that McGeech is in pole position.
As much as this seems a wonderful opportunity on paper for the PLC, I still feel this also has plenty of options to go spectacularly t!ts-up as well.
Hence my scepticism and lack of blind acceptance that this is the main deal it is painted as.
But like I've stated on a few occasions, I'll be happy to recant and be proven wrong.

However being more pragmatic about this, I see this as a positive move as was the appointment of Jack Rowell in our dark days. Regretfully Jack could not spend as much time helping Bath because of his commitments in Eastern Europe and the arrangement was very loose under the old management. Simon Halliday tried to fill in the gap left by Jack but the impression I got was that he didn't get on with AB.

This appointment I would think, knowing Nick B, will be well structured and what better person on the international stage to talk to prospective players to persuade them into the BB&W. Such an appointment last year might have also sorted out the problems at the club after the Matt Stevens fiasco and taken this burden from the coaches shoulders.

Not in doubt great appointment and no doubt other clubs will be looking on with envy!

Can't see how it would be appropriate for the Head Coach, whoever he is, to initiate appointment of a Performance Director. He might suggest it to the board but that's all.

Reading between the lines from the past two seasons, although it is not necessarilty part of his job description, for whatever reason Meehan does not seem to be overtly popular with the players. I certainly detected a rift between him and Lipman after the Tiggers HC loss, and it may be that McGeechan, all round good bloke and rugby genius, has been brought in to take the burden off Meehan in player relations.

As I say, Meehan is by no means required to be liked by anyone, so long as the players respect him and do a good job. Three main coaches, a Performance Director, and a Chief Executive reporting to Bruce Almighty does not seem particularly overcrowded to me.

Having had so many Head Coaches poached over the last 15 years and then been left in the lurch it makes sense to me to have someone in the club with the rugby knowledge and contacts to appoint a successor. McGeechan is also more than capable of holding the fort in the meantime if Meehan was tempted away by Australia or a Super 15 franchise.

Point well made Ralphy.

Maybe having someone in this role would have helped in the dark pre-Xmas days following Stevens and last summer's departures. Not many coaches/managers can manage the contacts/wheeling and dealing with the precision of getting a team to high performance.

Meehan's still got work to do but he can be completely focused and offload the tedium of most of the off field stuff. And yes continuity is essential (cf England for bad example). Hopefully Geech to Squeaky is the equivalent of a good pint too...the squitters. I'm sure someone's got a better analogy ;-)

I agree - its a rugby club not a confessional!

As for Geech, he's clearly got a lot of contacts in the game and a lot of experience so should be good if he's here to take some of the off field burden away from the coaches.

Can't be anything but good for the Club. Assume Bod is playing his usual devil's advocate role!!

Geech knows how to manage players, get the best out of them and has great respect in the English game. No doubt that Craig and Blofeld were the instigators, little input by Meehan. (P.S. Don't ever play Nick Blofed at poker - coz he bluffs well without actually fibbing).

Thus onwards and upwards - have we started a countdown to the kitlaunch and the first Friendly yet?

the man is a legend. agree with bod that its important he has a well defined role and that smee is 100% on board with it. cant imagine bruce and blofeld are naive enough to not ensure this is the case.

amongst other things i would imagine he will have great pulling power in terms of recruitment, and can you imagine how beneficial it will be for the academy guys considering his reputation for enthusing players about the game.

dont see this as anything other than great news personally.

I think that with Bruce Craig and Nick Blofeld (as against AB and Uncle Bob) there will be no risk of ambiguity in peoples roles in the club.

I am sure they will have looked at where the weaknesses are and plugged the gaps and that both SMee and Sir Ian will know exactly what is expected of them, and (I am sure) they will be expected to deliver.

An excellent appointment from all sorts of angles!
