Bry, once the capacity is increased, he will need to have big names to fill it. Despite the fact it's only being increased to 17,000 - O'Connor would help boost that. I can't imagine O'Connor would demand much more that 300,000, so it would probably be worth it.

Delusional!

It'd be nice to think that any player might consider Bath because of the way they are playing rugby, and the ethos they espouse, and not just because Bruce might decide to throw a wedge at the player.
BC2 really needs to think through who will lead the team very, very carefully - and forget anything SIM opines.

We've got a lot of the foundations to be a very good side indeed, I think a new DoR will get that out of this bunch, coupled with a strong pre-season.

As did Banahan, Mears, Louw, Perenise and Moody (Not that the last one had much impact with hindsight) Quinns are a perfect example of the advantages of a good pre-season involving the vast majority of your squad. One of the things Bath have suffered from this season is trying to change their style of play when many key players were absent.

2-3 preseason friendlies are NOT that important, and merely allow the players to blow a few post holiday cobwebs away.

"One of the things Bath have suffered from this season is trying to change their style of play when many key players were absent."
You mean they lack intellect and don't listen during training?

From pre-season training not a few friendlies, Bod. I couldn't really say to any degree of accuracy how much the responsibility for the failure of our change of style this season is down to those explaining it in training or those applying it during matches. I'd sure you have an opinion on the matter, though.

Pre-season , do they run up and down and hit the tackle bags any differently to their sessions during the season?
Are their weights lighters or heavier? Better range of supplements available?
Smoke and mirrors, and the tales of dark arts as perpetuated by the coaches to explain poor preparation?

In comparison to the season before: potentially, depends on the player, depends on whether any new suppliments are available and no although everyone's prone to the odd bit of self-serving bias in attributional reasoning now and then.

I believe that JPP signed a contract back in Oct 10 for 2 years with an option of a 3rd - so I think theoretically we could sign him for next season

There is a good video of Jaque Fourie here

With regards to O'Connor he was offered Aus$1.2 million a season to stay with the Force but moved to the rebels, so I am afraid we would have to stump up a lot of cash.

Dan Carter, Richie McCaw, half a dozen Saafas....what else do we need?

Gareth my dig wasn't addressed at you!

However, on a serious note I believe both you and I agreed some time ago on 'ere that SIM should be confined to the office and do what he is meant to do on academy and the senior structure and finding players etc and the gap left by Meehan's absence be filled ASAP. That IMHO is the biggest mistake made by BC/NB/SIM.

From what I understand Cooch, without overtly saying so, that's very much the managements view and it's clearly blighted the season. ALL management make mistakes, it's not a risk free business, but this was a big one based on personality not pragmatism (did you see what I did there??!!). It needs to be absorbed, addressed and resolved. I'd like it to have been done several months ago and have told NB that I'm afraid! However, it's too late now and we now need a viable coaching team in place for pre-season, the 2012/3 Prem and Amlin level rugby. Sigh.

The Chronicle 22/3 contained this:

Centres Ben Williams and Dan Hipkiss are fit again, while utility back Kyle Eastmond is back in training after recovering from a torn hamstring.

Stuart Hooper is three weeks away from returning from a broken thumb, while fly-half Stephen Donald is expected back in about a fortnight as he recovers from knee ligament damage.

"Stephen will be training next week but he needs to get that training in before he gets the games," explained McGeechan.

"He's running well now, so we are fully anticipating him to be part of the full sessions next week."

Of Hipkiss' and Williams' return to fitness, McGeechan added: "It means we can freshen the side up a bit. We've been reliant on a relatively small group of players.

"It's interesting to talk to a squad where we've got to make some selection decisions. I much prefer to have the problem of who to leave out."

Is this the first confirmation we've had that BigBen was actually injured in the first place?

Cheers, that sounds about right, and I'm not at all surprised it didn't heal properly, rugby players' injuries so rarely do; they're pretty much all pushed back into playing too soon and end up aggravating the original problem IMO.

I know I'm a big fan of Heathcote's, but I think it's worth mentioning that he's had two very severe knee injuries meaning even at the age of 20, he's missed two years of rugby. I think it shows great attitude and belief to come back from two injuries like that at such a young age. I hope his development continues as it is, Austin Healy has him as his 5th choice for the England 10 shirt, and he even put him forward for the England 12 shirt. Could see Heathcote going to 12 when Donald gets to full form and fitness.

In that list he was ahead of Ford, Lamb, Myler and Cipriani. But behind Burns, Flood, Hodgson and Farrell. I think for someone who wasn't expecting to play as much as he has to be talked about as 5th choice is pretty good. I also remember I was completely shot down when I said he'd play for England.

starting 10s? or 10s challenging for an EPS spot? especially considering that TH isn't a "starting 10" at Bath, so would be a tad harsh to compare him that way.

Challenging for the 10 shirt, off the top of my head:

Flood
Farrell
Hodgson
Cipriani
Burns
Ford
Heathcote
Myler
Lamb
Goode
Miller

Flood and Ford are likely to be in a genuine battle for the 10 shirt at Leicester
Farrell and Hodgson both start for Saracens
Miller is currently playing 15 for Sale, but looking to move back to 10 (may end up not doing so though; like Alex Goode, hence I've placed him last on the list).

For me, it's a good example of what "strength in depth" means; and what England's superior player population numbers actually result in; we've got 11 players who all look capable of playing fly half internationally; our 10th XV would be the best (or one of 2 with France) 10th XV in the world; and that hampers the 1st XV by trying to pick one, and sticking with them for a period of time, rather than swapping and changing with every international window, and fluctuation in form - if you only have 2 FHs capable of playing international rugby, then they're playing whenever fit, and can rack up 50 caps in 1 RWC cycle
