This makes as much sense as the Daily Wail's Mike Ford rumour - Hatley was a very good porp and coaches Not-nots' academy. If he came it would be as forwards coach, surely? This is the only rumour I've heard naming him - are you able to name your source, youellj?

I've hear the same Bri, not sure if the Scots have the same catchment rule that we have to use, I hope not as it is a shocking rule.

Why shocking Marshie? Why would the RFU pay for a Scottish player to be trained rather than an English one?

Stuart, I think the catchment rule we use here is a very poor one. It takes away any competition for the best players. It also penalises clubs with good academies to a degree because you are no longer competing for the best young players, you just get what you're given. It also is unfair on the player because they may fall into an area where the club has a poor academy.

The arbitrary nature of talent development via the RFU pathway is a hindrance to the AP clubs.
The T14 teams recruit across a much wider area - and their trainees also qualify for FFR representation. You will see the French parading their own Tongan/Samoan/Fijians quite soon in the same way that Tuilagi plays for England or Toby Falatau plays for Wales. There are plenty of E.European youngsters being fed through the system as well which can be applied below T14 level.

Aren't their Academies paid for by the clubs though Bod? If we wanted to bring in lots of foreign kids and pay for that ourselves there's nothing stopping us, bar immigration laws.

I can't see that squeezing out more and more English players from getting a foothold in rugby is a good idea though. There is a finite number of new rugby playing roles being created each year by virtue of retirements or emigration. If some of those are taken by foreign kids, that's less opportunities for English ones.

I know you believe that we should import foreigners, and damn the English talent and damn the local rugby game where we got them from. I just think you're morally wrong.

I appreciate your sentiment, and there was I time when I'd probably have argued the same BUT, these days we need to follow the cash, collect as many points as possible because you know what points make?????
Bath Rugby needs primarily to win and entertain, not develop talent for the RFU.
If that were a by product of the initial objective then fine and dandy.

He is 18 and can sign for any club he wants, he can also decide which country he can represent. If he is that good Bri can you let your contacts in the club know about him!

Bod, we can sign anybody over 18 provided they meet the immigration criteria. Are you advocating we sign U18?

Why do think the current pathway scheme is a hindrance to AP teams?,

Do you have any links to information about the T14 and their "foreign legion" and how the T 14 are managing the recruitment program?

Falatau came to this country aged 7, Tuilagi arrived in the UK aged 12/13 - both were as a result of family employment in the UK and went through UK junior rugby schemes.

I don't think we can sign U18s to full Pro contracts can we. The point I'm making may seem unsavoury but whilst the system we have seems to restrict the search for development talent to a worthy but limited talent pool when other seemingly more "aggresive" systems work further afield.
Anectdotally, I have a friend and contact who works as a rugby agent in Spain, and even the Spanish Federation are working on establishing scholarship and coaching exchange relationships with Fiji, Tonga and Samoa based on their experiences of sending young players from Spain across to play and be coached. (Real Madrid are evaluating setting up a rugby "division" alongside their other sports interests)
Whether we accept it or not we need to be aware of all the opthers who have a lot more experience of making money out of team sport!

I guess that could be a moral conundrum Stu, those of us of a certain age will acknowledge this as an issue.
However, one mans exploitation of talent is anothers' giving the best talent the greatest stage to execute and display their athletic gifts - hence the number of Plastic-Brits welcomed by the British Olympic team I guess.
It is as it as and will increase.

I remember once reading an interview article of Harry Rednapp when he was questioned about why he signed so many players of African origin and he said he found their desire to succeed equal to his immediate contemporaries in post-war London.
"When you and your family have truly been hungry you make sure you work harder to exploit those talents you have that take you away from that place".

Whether we as older codgers like it or not the smarter operators now will follow the money. Luckily perhaps, we'll enjoy priviledged memories of a different ethos?

Let's revisit this exchange post RWC 2015 and see the dynamics then, especially given the renegotiation of T14 TV rights with Canal+ during 13/14 I believe and S15 come 14/15 when it looks like the study to expand to S18 might be adopted with trial teams for Argentina, USA and Japan.
When is the Sky/ESPN deal renewed anyone along with the England deal for HQ?
Follow the money whether you like it or not. I'm sure BC2 is bright enough to accept that the better the product then the better the price. He should be optimistic given our existing benchmark!

Thought you believed all these deals will be torn up in favour of a mythical European SuperLeague?

Having better players helps you win, but doesn't necessarily create a better TV product - the better player could be a defender who snuffs out tries.

There will be changes initiated by the independant/private/Ltd Cp. clubs in France and England since they'll want a bigger return on the players they develop - that's my thought.
The priority will be the club, not the country.
Unless more cash is available in UK to clubs then there will only be 2 or 3 possibly Euro-competitive clubs that will dominate the RFU league and cup structure a bit like Scottish Football.

Whereas Ireland are adopting a different structure:-

The AB process????
