When do we think the next signing will be announced....

I understand we were originally looking to sign about 4 new players but with Moody out & Carraro probably moving on, I imagine we may be in for 5 or 6 new players now.

I hope we are going to get someone to replace Belly, more competition for Claassy & someone like JP Pietersen for 13/14

If rumour of the new coach & a couple of players coming from S15, I imagine that we won't hear about then before May.(I would guess the club are probably finalising paperwork or have done already & will be taking input from new coach on player signings.)

I believe the 4 figure includes Webber and Day.

Agreed DBF, so the implication is that we have a minimum of 2 more players to be announced , but it could be as many as 4 if we replace Moody & Carraro.

Nothing linking him to us, not heard anything to suggest it, but Adam Ashley-Cooper would be a phenomenal signing as our marquee player. OC, wing and fullback and pure quality in each.

If we were going for Morgan was it because he was available or do we need a 8?

Re: New Signings for 2012
devizes bath fan 20 March, 2012 12:03
We were going for him before we resigned Ovens so it may be that we're sorted in the backrow as Taylor, Skirving and Fearns cover 8 and Fearns, Ovens, Skirving and Louw cover 6.

Re: New Signings for 2012
Bri 20 March, 2012 12:06
Ovens was always going to be retained,so that's not the reason.

Re: New Signings for 2012
devizes bath fan 20 March, 2012 12:08
Okay, well from a squad and cap point of view, we don't need him. Next season, if Fearns doesn't develop into a premiership 8 and with Taylor a year older and out of contract, maybe.

Re: New Signings for 2012
Tall Paul 20 March, 2012 12:11
I think we are fine for a number 8 for next season but could probably do with one the season after. Assuming Morgan is out of the equation, I'd quite like to see us replace our Scottish No 8 with a Scottish No 8! Dave Denton signed a 2 year extension with Edinburgh in October, according to their offy, so not sure if that is for this season (improved terms) and next, or whether it is 2 seasons after this one? I'm sure if we had a seasons overlap he could learn a lot from Taylor.

Brian, I'd prefer it if Fearns was given a chance at 8, Louw moves to 6 and we sign a proper honest-to-goodness open-side.

Bry, not strictly true, from the clubs point of view it's bang on, but Ovens took some persuading, and we had to drop our interest in Morgan to keep Ovens.

DBF, I think Louw is the best in the Premiership at turning ball over, so I'd have him at 7 every game. I think our best back row next year will still be;

6. Fearns/Skirving
7. Louw
8. Taylor

The only thing that lacks slightly is pace to the breakdown, which is why I'd be tempted to include Skirving somewhere, who is the fastest in the squad over 10m!!!

Put him on the wing. He'd probably do a better job than Banahan at the moment.

Marshie, do you mean fastest forward over 10m or the whole squad? Surely Biggs, Bendy and/ or Kyle take that crown?

I see what you mean, but don't really agree.
Webber is a step up on Dixon, and will properly challenge Mears for the shirt.
Day is a massive step up on... nobody; because that's who our 4th choice lock is currently, since Spencer doesn't seem to be trusted anymore (not trusted or injured without news? anyone know?)

I'd also say that our uncertainty on the coaching staff can't be helping our recruitment attempts

Looking at the players the club would have planned to be leaving I wouldn't expect to be enthused.

Now that Moody is gone then perhaps, but I'd rather sign the right person next year than a compromise this year.

Why don't Bath have another team in Regional SW3 for the Academy/Seconds to play regularly - like the Pro Soccer teams have their 2nd teams playing down the league structure?
The Monday night set-up is quite pointless.

I remember Caldwell copping flack when he was signed, why did we sign a guy thats going to get sent off all the time etc (based on his rep at the time) and can't make the Ulster team he's not going to take us forawrd etc etc. He's not turned out to bad has he?

They maynot be big names, but shall we give them a chance in the BB&W and see if tehy do take us forward?

Re: New Signings for 2012

Webber's competition for Mears, Day is competition with Hooper for the bench. They're not meant to be inspirational signings.

Re: New Signings for 2012
OutsideBath 20 March, 2012 12:53
Sale certainly seem to know what they want and it may well succeed with their signings to date, not convinced our management are equally sure on how to progress.

Unless we act soon we're in danger of dropping further behind the top teams.

"Weren't people saying that last year before we signed Donald? Kind of enforces the point."

I thought it was well known last year we were prepared to break boundaries and even the cap going after a good fly half? I've heard nothing to suggest, prior to Moody leaving, that this year we're looking to spend money.

Re: New Signings for 2012
Tricky=Legend 20 March, 2012 13:15
I've said it before and I'll say it again, we need to give this group of players a proper preseason together (hopefully with a bigger and better coaching team) and some time to develop. A few big names are not going to transform this team into Premiership champions over night. We've got some great established players and some really good young talent coming through. Let's just give them a chance!!

Look at Quins. Most of their players in their current team are home grown. They have one big star in Nick Evans (who have been there for ages) and they barely signed anyone this season. I don't think they will necessarily win the Premiership this year, but they're top of the table having been languishing around 6th place for the last few seasons. No reason why we can't see the same results in a year or two.

Re: New Signings for 2012
OutsideBath 20 March, 2012 13:25
I'm not a big fan of "give it time" and just see it as an excuse for poor performances. That said I no longer expect us to be title contenders with the current management/coaching setup so won't be too angry if we don't finish top 4 in the next few seasons.

I'm more concerned about the lack of progress leaving us scrapping with teams at the bottom again next season.

3 locks - yes
0 FHs - Donald (away), Vesty, Barkley, Heathcote
1 Wing - Banahan (away), Biggs, Bendy, Carraro

squad of 35 - how many specialists do you want?

We made our big signings last year, in comparison to Sale, their big name signing in the pack is Gray, ours was Louw - of those I'd take Louw in a heartbeat. There big signings in the backs is Cipriani, ours was Carter but then had to be Donald. Between Donald and Cipriani, I'd probably prefer Cipriani, just.

Re: New Signings for 2012

When I said no fly half and 1 recognised winger, I wasn't counting utility players who could fill in there at a push.

Thank god Heathcote has really come on this year but what does it say when our first choice 10 isn't even in our senior squad?

Re: New Signings for 2012

ballsout has a good point, but we weren't really expecting Donald to get called up/held in NZ. I still maintain that I think Jimmy Gopperth would have been a far better signing.

That our first-choice is injured and Heathcote has proven a better choice at 10 than the other squad/utility players available.

I'm hearing rumours of us courting another (British) no.8. That would be good, since Simon Taylor, although excellent, is not getting younger & is the only out-and-out 8 we have. Skirvs IMHO is better at 6, but then again Ovens & Fearns are pretty good 6s too!

Re: New Signings for 2012
Bri 20 March, 2012 15:06
Spencer is still young but very injury prone so far, this can change of course but it's a little worrying for me as he has potential.
I'm not sure Oven could dictate to the club I'll sign but only if you drop your interest in
Morgan. He would have had clubs after him and I would have thought he was told to wait his turn as it would come but he is a Bath boy who wants to play for us.
On a personal view unless we sign a top loose head and a twelve who is sharper and quicker than we got we and possiblily a huge lock, other team have recruited better than us.
Webber who I rate, is never going to change the game much, nor Day.
Now rumours we had a big offer turned down by Richie Gray and we sign Day,their is a big difference there.

Brian, I think that's exactly what Ovens said.
