Target is to do everything it takes to avoid relegation. If that means getting in the top half of the table by winning more matches than we lose, great, but relegation is a very real possibility, especially with Newcastle's new coaches at the helm.

Roll on the Newcastle game so we can put all this "avoiding relegation is the target" nonsense to be once and for all.

I think they're actually a bit of a threat now. Gold was responsible for drilling the South African pack of the last few years and Ford did an ok job in defence for England. With a pack that will be drilled hard and Gopperth to kick the points I can see them playing limited, aggressive, and probably quite bland rugby; but they can get some wins out of it.

they can easily get 3-4 wins and unless Wasps and us sort ourselves out, we're going to be sucked in.

I'm amazed how little discussion us buying Joe Simpson out his contract after failing to get Genia is getting. Obviously 90% chance its completely made up but still more likely than us getting relegated.

Incidently we are 80/1 to win the AP and 3/1 joint favourites to win the LV.

Where did signing Genia get dreamt up from?
If he were available would he come to Bath, seriously?
In football parlance that'd be like Blackburn trying to sign Messi - nice idea though!

I doubt we'll sign an Australian with the Lions tour coming up in 2013. I think if we're going to sign overseas stars, they should be Saffas, then we don't have the international rule trouble. Becker from the Stormers would be nice, as would Brits. Although I suppose with Carraro being technically English next year, we have space for another "foreigner".

Re: New Signings for 2012
@Hydor18 18 January, 2012 13:37
The Simpson rumours seem unfounded because he's an aspiring international who won't want to play second fiddle to Claassy (such competition could be good though, I guess), and, unless he has an option to leave, he's still under contract with Wasps so a transfer payment would be needed and that seems a bit extravagent if you ask me.

Parisse? Yep, I'd take him! Morgan might be potential, but Sergio is the finished article. Not sure he'd suit English rugby though.

I hope the club think hard about strengthening the academy - it's no wonder we are getting stuffed all the time we don't even have enough academy players to field a full team.

I would have thought it would be in the clubs interest to have a large academy with lots of competition for places.

I thought the salary cap wasn't really an issue at academy level & I don't think academy players are too expensive in any case.

If we want to build a team that bleeds black, white & blue surely it has to start in the academy. Or am I missing something?

Not sure if you mean we are looking at 14-16 more academy players.

I think our current academy is about 17 players - I think we need an academy of about 25-30 players.

Ok thats not going to mean we win games when other teams field a raft of 1st teamers, but it should mean we are at least competitive.

It would be good if we didn't have to loan out our good academy players to get experience & instead could go & watch them develop on a Monday night

The players are identified at 14-16 and then monitored with training,A league games and if they are any good offered a Academy contract,I think that's how it works.
No clubs have many more than us and quality is better than quanity. They usually stay to 20/21 and then if they are not signed they move on

Re: New Signings for 2012
TCM2007 18 January, 2012 19:14
I think all the Acedemies are roughly the same size? As well as the 17 there are also about 12 at the university plus around 60 at various age group / skill levels.

It's SIM's policy to combine loan periods to get game time with training with the senior squad - I gather this is seen as a big improvement over how it used to be.

Not sure how other clubs work, I had a quick look at the tigers site & they seem to have about 40 in their academy, don't know what others have.

I just think it would be sensible to have an elite academy that has 2 or 3 players covering each position.

I fully appreciate that having our players out on loan may be a step up from what we had previously. However I still feel that if we had a competitive academy we wouldn't need to do that.

Most other clubs take pride in the A team games - we certainly don't appear to do that. A winning mentality is something that can be learnt. If the youngsters get used to winning, perhaps that wouldn't be a bad thing to bring into the first team.

Re: New Signings for 2012
Substitute 18 January, 2012 20:12
Tbh, I think Bath is already in a disadvantaged position when it comes to the academy, in that it is in region saturated with other rugby clubs. Sadly this isn't football and big money, so the chance of getting a 16-year-old to move from, say, Newcastle is pretty slim.

Re: New Signings for 2012
Bri 18 January, 2012 20:19
It's because clubs like Leicester name all the Academy players ie gold and silver and we only have our senior academy players up or if you like our contracted players.

Re: New Signings for 2012
@Hydor18 18 January, 2012 21:48
Sub, you could argue we're in no worse position in terms of competition than Leics, Northants, Bedford, Notts, Coventry and Birmingham.

Re: New Signings for 2012
TCM2007 18 January, 2012 21:51
I think the RFU, which funds the Academies, goes out of its way to make sure they are pretty even.

We may have a relatively small catchment and plenty of rivals, but the South West is the rugby heartland so we probably have a higher number of players to draw on per 000 school kids than most.

Re: New Signings for 2012

IIRC the RFU set the number of players, and the wages they're on (or at least, upper and lower wage limits, quite close together, and a separate academy salary cap), across all 14 academies.
They're all basically the same, the only difference is how far down the ladder a team puts names up on the website.

Unsourced and probably random conjecture but I saw this on therugbyforum and thought it would be of interest:

"Apparently Gethin doesn't want to have to learn French, so won't be off over the channel. Still likely to leave the Blues, though."

Who knows where it is from but it looks good for us if there is any truth in this unsourced conjecture.

Re: New Signings for 2012

OK the RFU set the academy sal cap - surely it cannot be set so low that we can only sign 1 lock, 1 hooker & a couple of props.

I understand that we may have some at the Uni but it appears that they are not good enough to be in the academy.

I am unclear why I seem to be the only one on ere who thinks that strengthening the academy- particularly the front 5, should be a high priority for the club.

Re: New Signings for 2012
Which Tyler 19 January, 2012 10:01
You're not the only one; however, if you've only got room for 18 players in the academy, and you can't outspend other clubs, you can't just go recruiting players from elsewhere

It's not that easy to find 18 stone and if you believe some on here that's not big enough,so 18 stone plus athletic guys to play prop at the schools there maybe big lumps but by the time they train they end up 16 stone. Then on top of that they must be trainable, right attitude

Strengthening the Academy is vital. But strengthening doesn't mean increasing is size, it means getting the very best.

Boring old maths suggests that you'll never sign more then four or five a year onto senior contracts.

Anyone care to speculate about players we may be about to sign...

I liked the ones about Morgan & Brits.

Marshie seemed quite confident about Brits... He is out of contract, would be first on Sarries list to re-sign yet no news & Bendy was complementary (in a way that is usually reserved for a team mate.Hopefully Bendy has't signed for Sarries)

Re: New Signings for 2012

Brits is an interesting one, he's one of Sarries' best players but the've also got Jamie George up and coming and Smit. If they were to let someone decent go it'd be Brits and if he was to come to an English club he'd probably go where his old Stormers mate is.

Morgan we probably won't get... Glaws are finally getting out the chequebook big time and it is rumoured that they're offering big money. Unless he's already taken by us I'd expect to go there.

I would be absolutely stunned if Brits left Sarries for another AP club. I imagine if he goes anywhere it'll be back to Western Province/Stormers as contracts between them and Sarries seem pretty interchangeable (i.e. Brits' one game loan, Deon Carstens' playing for whoever needs a prop that weekend).

I to would be amazed if we signed Brits. However if you look at what Bath does have to offer a player coming from a club like Sarries :

Beautiful city to bring up family
Fantastic training environment
Great stadium close to fans, full house
Decent accommodation, out of metropolitan sprawl

So why wouldn't he look at coming to Bath
