Whilst it was pleasing to see the performance on Saturday, I do worry that with Ford on board they will have a tight defence, look to gain penalties and tehn rely on Gopperth's boot.

My concern exactly, we give away so many penalties we could easily find ourselves in trouble with this match. Especially if the players think this will be a walkover like many on ERE.

How do you think they spend their circa E4-6M salaries in Ireland for example, of circa £5M in Cardiff or Neath-Swansea?

Chabal was reported to be on 1 million euros per season at Racing. I'm fairly sure that signing someone like that mid-season and not as a medical joker would draw a great deal of attention from the salary cap wombles.

I've seen those sort of numbers posted here a few times recently, are these facts or unsubstantiated rumours WT?

You'll know that the set-up in Ireland is different to all others, over there the Union (IRFU) are responsible for the Irish Players wages and for development of the game in Ireland (I thought around about E20m all-in so no-where near E5m for each provinces wage bill). For that they have a greater say in player welfare etc, meaning that provinces are not allowed to play an International in more than 9 or 10 (I think) Rabo games each season. While at the same time the Provinces pay for the imports and to keep the provinces "brand" alive.

Internet chat about £m salaries is far from the mark, sponsorship in Swansea may have allowed the O's to support a wage of E0.400m for Bowe but at Ulster he would fall in line with someone like Sexton (circa E0.150m) or O'Driscoll (circa E0.350m), even the imports aren't on those big numbers (I understand Elsom managed E0.300m at Leinster but he was exceptional).

Irish wages are complicated by the fact they they are all employed by the IRFU and so it's hard to say what payment was for provincial rugby and and what for playing in internationals.

They have no cap so they don't need to keep count.

As for new signings, a wise old head is exactly the kind of 4th option at lock I would be after for next season but I would have thought that both Chabal and Thorn would want way to much to make it viable. Plus I'm not sure that Chabal fits the wise part.

No idea why so many seem to want a new #8, or even backrower at that.
Morgan's a slightly different story, but not worth a transfer fee. Maybe we'll be in the market next year with the likely retirement of Moody, and possible of Taylor

correction, only one of those is a specialist 8.
Fearns & Skuse (IMO) are natural 8s who can play across the backrow.
Louw and Mercer are natural flankers, who can play across the backrow.
We've currently got 8 backrows (2 with 50+caps, 2 more with caps, and 4 looking like future internationals) and 3 locks on the books, and look likely to release 1 backrower, quite possibly promoting one from the academy.
I really, really don't want us to waste yet more cap on the backrow, especially as it would be at the expense of the tight 5, where it's needed.

FRANCOIS STEYN - out of contract at Racing, monster boot & can play anywhere in the backs apart from SH
MORGAN or SALVI - believe he's out of contract at Leic as only signed as injury cover for Newby. Sure he'd be keen to link up with best mate Matty C again
DAY - looked good on tele last night, complement Attwood & Ryan well
GETHIN JENKINS

And there you go "only 1 is a SPECIALIST 8".

We need ANOTHER specialist 8. It's that sort of "thinking" that has lead to England not having a decent 7 since Neil Back....

Fearnsand Skuse are not 8's and never will be yes they can "cover" at 8 but that's not what we need....

As stated above - I disagree.
I know I'm in a minority of interweb posters, but I'm happy for people to have different opinions.
I think both Fearns and Skuse are natural 8s, and will be very good specialists there once given the game-time. Of course, if the coaches agree with you it'll be a self-fulfilling prophesy as they'll never get the game time to become specialists.

Is his price likely to go up just yet?
He's currently a full international, with a £100k addition to his wage in the form of transfer fee (which counts in the cap).
This time next year he'll be running out of contract, and will still be a full international, but with no added strings to his bow (lions, 25+caps etc etc).
His wage may well increase in the next year, but unlikely to add the £100k needed to be worth signing now instead.

He's a good player, I just don't think we need him at the moment, I certainly don't think we CAN sign him, and without releasing 1-2 of our 4 promising kids.
Simply not worth it IMO.

Ben Morgan is a good player no doubt but if Carl Fearns is going to be playing 8 next season we have a far better one.
Most people have only just heard of Ben Morgan,I have watched him on and off for the last 3 years and Fearnsy for the last 5 and believe me Fearns will become a British Lion if he can stay injury free.
