As for new signings, a wise old head is exactly the kind of 4th option at lock I would be after for next season but I would have thought that both Chabal and Thorn would want way to much to make it viable. Plus I'm not sure that Chabal fits the wise part.

Looks like Chabal has his sights set on S15 rugby next season, either at Rebels or Ponies.

According to the Chron, no loose head and no outside back will be signed.

Interesting piece from Tom Bradshaw, he is normally pretty accurate contract negotiations. So presumably there is at very least the 250k that was heading to Jenkins available.

LHP sorted
Hooker is sorted
THP???
2nd row with Day may be sorted
Backrow???
Interesting that it says no outside backs not no backs...Simpson or another 9 seems likely

No first team releases?

The pack looks like it's going to get 1 or 2 new first teamers but it looks like the backs are going to be the same for next seasons. They need to start gelling pretty soon so Donald's injury couldn't come at a worse time.

1) Webber
2) Day/A.N. Other 2nd row
3) We will have to bring in a 9 to replace MMM by the sounds of things.
4) ??? TH possibly or number 8 possibly
5) General contract upgrades

With Beattie, Dixon, Bell, MMM all leaving plus 500k extra cap plus c250k marquee those numbers don't add up to me unless numbers 3) and 4) are of a very high quality

Re: New Signings for 2012
Tall Paul 16 February, 2012 16:05
You're right DA, and with Bruce pushing the Marquee thing so hard, it just doesn't add up, unless they have something spectacular up their sleeves!

Regarding your numbers 3 & 4, I'm not convinced these are the areas we need to improve this season. If we can get Morgan then as I have said on other threads, it would be great to get him, but him specifically and not just any old number 8... though Parisse would do nicely if he were surplus to requirements at Stade (Sm151) Claas is no spring chicken but is playing well, and Cook is far from the finished article but will learn from Claas over the next few seasons, and will hopefully be ready at the point where Claas decides to call it a day. The age gap between them is near perfect!

Having said that, I cannot see where they are going to spend big (I know where I would spend big if it were my money, but cannot identify what I think the club will do, as I don't think we have THAT much chance of signing Brian O'Driscoll, James Hook, Vincent Clerc or Maxime Medard!)

What's with all the talk of MMM potentially not coming back from his injury? What has he done? He looked ok at the Q&A session at the Pheasant a couple of weeks ago and I thought they said he would be back in a month? If anyone remembers better I am happy (or not as it would mean he has a bad injury) to be corrected.

Re: New Signings for 2012

Remember these signings of Academy players onto full time contracts will be costing money.

And while the main cap is increasing, there was a WC dispensation which would have been worth £90-150k depending on how its calculated, which we are losing.

They may well be trying to leave some free for opportunist signings next year.

It implies that the coaching team don't have a clue about the kind of players they want (and presumably, the style they want to play?) - opportunist? Let's see what turns up more like.
Do the other top sports teams follow an opportunist pathway when it comes to recruitment?
You couldn't make this up could you?
Is it next season, or the season after when the SIM project gells, clicks, get's it on, consolidates, turns it round, or just gets lucky (that seems to be the "plan")

Just for a bit of fun, here are the Toulon recruits so far for 2011/12

Arrivées certaines : Sheridan (Sale) – Kennedy (London Irish) – Michalak (Sharks)

Arrivées imminentes : Jenkins (Cardiff) – Masoe (Castres) – Delve (Rebels) – D. Armitage (London Irish) – G. Armitage (London Irish) – Wulf (Auckland Blues)

Arrivées possibles : Durand (Racing-Metro)

Salary cap of T14 next season set at €8.75 million.

By the way, Matt Henjak is available (SH) from Toulon, a real bully of a No.9 (similar style to Kelleher).

But, in his defence, who wouldn't punch Gavin Henson given the chance?

The 2004 assault charge in South Africa (which disappeared when he paid $16k to get rid of it) and breaking his teammate's jaw in 2008 are, however, less forgiveable.
