I'm not sure we need a huge re-vamp of the squad, as we've already done that in many ways. I think we need a Head Coach/ DoR who is in touch with the modern game...

Re: Lewis Moody
devizes bath fan 29 February, 2012 13:46
I disagree Brian. It's not as simple as bulk. Tony Buckley is one of the 'bulkiest' props in the premiership but he's also one of the worst scrumagers IMHO. Flatman is one of the best in the scrum I have seen technically. He doesn't seem to be as effective as he was due, possibly, to the toll of many injuries but his knowledge of scrumaging technique and experience will benefit Catt.

Re: Lewis Moody
Bri 29 February, 2012 13:46
It's a revamp for me,if we want to win things.

Re: Lewis Moody
Bri 29 February, 2012 13:49
Catty is a excellent scrummager but a excellent little one will very, very beat a excellent big one, nothing to do with Buckley,he's just a lump.

Re: Lewis Moody
devizes bath fan 29 February, 2012 13:50
Judging by players contracts, it'll either going to be a re-vamp at the end of next season or someone's badly screwed up. Maybe Bod could identify who could be responsible for this?

So props need bulk but need to avoid being a lump? Could you expand?

Mercer is not the only one. Mears, Catt, Attwood, Caldwell, Fearns, Moody, Skirving, Taylor, Claassens, Donald, Vesty, Barkley, Hipkiss, Banahan, Cuthbert and Biggs are all out of contract after next season.

That'd be my call - maybe harsh, but you're looking then into 2013/14 and contracts probably running through to RWC so have they got another 2-3 years and we need to make space for rising Academy players surely?

Agree with that Bod - might even add Barkley to it as well - as soon as Eastmond is up to speed I can't see him getting a look in

Re: Lewis Moody
Bri 29 February, 2012 13:55
For a example, I wouldn't call Catty a lump,he can scrummage well is very good in the loose but I would call Buckley a lump,as he can't scrummage and is rrarely good in the loose and is just a big lump.

Re: Lewis Moody
devizes bath fan 29 February, 2012 14:03
So does Buckley not have bulk?

No, the new owners came in and basically sacked half the squad.

So did Sale last summer after they finished 10th

I thought long and hard - and probably agree privately, but, given that I want to keep my house windows intact I declined to make my theory public.

In 18 months time you will probaly be right or not far wrong.

Re: Lewis Moody

I would hope that Skirving doesn't go, or Claassens. I'd also hope that Taylor will get a one year extension.

Re: Lewis Moody
devizes bath fan 29 February, 2012 14:17
It really all depends on how much the players want, whether they're happy as squad players and who is coming up from the youth setup as to whether older players re-sign. I'd rather we prioritise the likes of Mears and Barkley over Hipkiss and Vesty though for obvious reasons.

That's what I guessed you'd go for. A lot are for age I feel and the only one I'd disagree with really would be Hipkiss.

Although I think the club will probably only release Moody (because his injuries may be too great to continue playing), Donald (because he wants to) and Cuthbert (because he isn't good enough).

We have had a major overhaul of our squad for the last goodness knows how many seasons and it's time to get a setlled squad that we tweak as necessary. I believe that generally we have a squad that can compete with the best and we're bringing on some fantastic prospects.

Re: Lewis Moody
marshie10 29 February, 2012 16:08
Bod, why do you not rate Skirving? Just interested...

Re: Lewis Moody
noidea 29 February, 2012 17:12
Thinking about it I would probably re-sign Skirving - think he could do with putting on a few KGs so he could be considered as proper back up for the back 5, but I think he has made a good fist of things when asked to fit in at lock

Re: Lewis Moody

Skirving as a squad member is certainly worth retaining.

You need to go darker than that - though I agree with the sentiment.

Not sure the colour thing is going to catch on though - not unless you call it the iScheme, or something winking smiley

The notion that they 'sacked' players like Roberts, Bell, Hodgson, Fearns, Koyamaibole, Tait and McIntyre is PR spin even Diamond wouldn't attempt.

Re: Lewis Moody
marshie10 29 February, 2012 17:24
I'm not sure if I've told this story before, but I think if one has a low opinion of Skirving, this may just boost it.

At the beginning of last season, Steve Meehan told Ben Skirving that he didn't want him, he was into the last year of his contract and Meehan wanted to send him out on loan until his contract finished. Skirving said no, that he wanted to stay, train hard, and fight for his place. Skirving did this, and through a couple of injuries got his place in the side, he then was involved in the next 20+ consecutive match day squads.

I think that says a lot about Skirving's desire and will. I think he's a very good player and one that does a lot of unseen work around the park. He's also the quickest player in the squad over 10 meters!

Re: Lewis Moody
paul bath 29 February, 2012 17:26
Back to the subject, Moody is by far the worst investment made, demonstrated by hits two appearances this season in all competitions.

Hipkiss isn't much better.

On the Leicester contract debate, I am led to believe a contract was offered to LM for two years and then withdrawn due to Moody not agreeing to retire from England duty.

I thought his contract with us was 2 years plus an option on a 3rd. Maybe just wishful thinking!

With regards to Mercer having to step up. I believe Mercer wants to step up back can't get an opportunity with Louw and Taylor fit. I also think Mercer is our future and will prove to be an excellent player given the game time.

Good example although wouldn't a boosted low opinion be an extremely low opinion?

I think we'd be in the naughty corner for several threads today. Maybe we should demand that the mods split each of those thread into the initial topic, with separate threads for each side-track taken - surely it couldn't take more than a couple of days to catch up with today's ramblings?
Out of interest - what size of TV do you think you need to really notice a difference between standard definition and HD? is it really worth investing in a 3DTV if holywood are just going to get bored in a couple of years, and TV companies get sued for causing mild headaches in WoW-3D addicts?

Getting slightly back on track, but still possibly worrying, I saw an article about this May's Baa-Baas game suggesting that Tindall and Moody had been signed up for the Baa-Baas! A chance for another pre-season injury, perhaps?
