Magnificent 7?

•Julian Salvi - Leicester
•James Scaysbrook - Exeter

Both former Bath 7's in the shortlist for player of the year and now we don't have a specialist 7 (except Mercer who needs work)
Why do we lose players who then end up being voted 2 of the top 6 in the league?

I think an uninjured Francois Louw is at least the equal of either of those two, and Carl Fearns isn't too shabby either!

Keep the faith!

Lipman kept Scays out of the side so he sought pastures new, we all know what Lippy went on to do next!! Salvi was only staying for a year, wanted to come back. But we'd signed Fearns & Louw, so don't think we let anyone slip through our fingers

mmm, I love Louw and I like what I've seen of Fearns but neither are out and out 7's they are 6.5's. Salvi and Scays are 7's and that's why they are on thre shortlist they ply there trade knowing that a good 7 wins matches and thats why they win the vote.
IMHO.

With apologies to the Original film :-

"[Calvera has just captured the Seven]
Calvera: What I don't understand is why a man like you became a Bath Rugby fan in the frst place, hmm? Why, huh?
Chris: I wonder myself.
Calvera: No, come on, come on, tell me why.
Vin: It's like a fellow I once knew in El Paso. One day, he just took all his clothes off and jumped in a mess of cactus. I asked him that same question, "Why?"
Calvera: And?
Vin: He said, "It seemed to be a good idea at the time."

Agree MO. Neither Salvi or Scays would get anywhere near the Bok 6 shirt. Wouldn't swap both of them for Louw far less one of them.

Fair point but our Aviva &'s are a bit different arn't they owing to the weather conditions and thre type of game played in the NH. Louw's game though very effective (I think he's a top quality player) is different to Salvi and Scays and they are the players who are winning the pladits here...

As Prof Griff pointed out neither of them was 'let go'. They simply had their own reasons for moving on. So the intital premise falls apart.

It's the same thing with Hudson. He''s been winning plaudits at Falcons. Yet to keep him we'd have had to play him instead of Grewcock or Borthwick. We chose not to. He left. That's life.

Louw is a better openside than either of those two. Scaysbrook gets through an enormity of work at the breakdown and he's really had a brilliant season, but he's not a brilliant fetcher. Louw on the other hand may not have the build of a 7, but he's the best fetcher in the league. I actually think that Salvi has grown at Leicester into more of a 6.5, he's not as quick as he was and he seems to have put on some weight.

Michael Hooper has just joined the Waratahs from the Brumbies, he's 20 and he is outstanding. He'd be perfect at Bath, with him at 7, Louw at 6 and Fearns at 8, we'd be unstoppable in the back row. Hooper is behind Pocock in the Austrlia selection and his father is English - he'd walk into the England 7 jersey as well.

Lipman will be back in the Premiership next year, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him competing for the England 7 jersey, despite his age.

Ah, the benefit of hindsight, Joe!

Scays reluctantly at the time, left Bath several years ago, slogged away at Exeter whilst they were building brick by brick from the bottom up, and he has come into his own. He has nearly as many years at Exe as a mature player as he did at Bath. Bet he knows whether regrets moving!

Hudson spent a couple of years playing second fiddle to Casey and Kennedy at Irish before he moved to Falcons.

From what I have seen Fearns will never be a true 7 as he is too slow!

Mercer has a lot of growing up and outwards but has showed promise in the past but has had a very poor season indeed and if he is honest must recognise he has gone backwards. Why I ask?

Louw is a class act but in my opinion is a 6 and Taylor is a very hard working 8.

I do not know about the Aussie Hooper, but Ovens to me is and will become a great player, probably at 6 to begin with and then become an 8. He shows so much courage and guts, covers more of the field than most of the rest of the side put together and tries so vey hard. Just watch him as I did against Wasps, he was phenominal!!

Scays has done well and fits Exeter's pattern of play as with their front five going forward, he can roam and cause mayhem- easy for a fast 7. Salvi has slowed a bit but is still a very effcetive amn at the breakdown and gets through huge amounts of work.

Must look up Hooper!
