Publishing IP information

In a recent thread Coochie Coo published the IP location of a poster.
I considered this personal data but I presume I'm wrong.

I also assumed my IP location would not be published in such a way.

Am I correct in thinking that this site could publish such data at any time about any of the contributors?

If so many may consider if they want to participate in such a place.

I didn't publish the IP address I merely stated that the address location was in Melksham which does not mean that the person lives in Melksham for instance my IP address is located in London although I live in Broughton Gifford. The big IP addresses such as Sky, Plusnet etc are not necessarily in the location of the user.

The IP address does not give any identity of the individual poster and have no idea who he or she is or their exact address so the person's identity has not been compromised.

Whilst I had concerns about information being put into the public domain that I felt shouldn't be, I certainly didn't think it was a resignation matter.

I feel responsible and saddened by the consequences of this thread and wish it hadn't taken the turns it has.

Coochie - if you really have taken off your moderator hat as a consequence of this I am very sorry. I would also like to take the opportunity to thank you for all your work as a mod - you always appeared level headed and sensible to me.

Whilst I don't wish to continue the flounce response, I certainly will try to consider unforeseen consequences of my typing in the future.

Cooch, you've made a mistake, but you've apologised. End of story. If you enjoy being a mod, carry on, you're good at it. If you don't really enjoy it, maybe this is a convenient time for you to step down.

All I know is that if Bod were to become a mod, ERE would hilarious! But nobody would come on here to learn anything about Bath Rugby, because he doesn't know anything about Bath Rugby. It would become a fans forum for girls rugby and news about the boring signings other clubs make.

Coochie,

Being Editor of one of the most vibrant of message boards is a labour of love and one that denies the holder of the post the freedom that others have to abuse both each others and themselves.

But someone has to do it. And whilst you did it Coochie you did it with distinction. So may I for one thank you for having done it.

If you are really stuck, even though I support Bristol I could stand in until the board elects a successor. Finding the right candidate will not be easy.

Can understand why CC wants to step down. This board has become a real bore of late with constant sniping and bickering and negativity.

Yes our rugby club have had a shocking season but why decend into personal attacks just because people don't agree with others thoughts.

As others have recently posted you have to wade through realms of bickering to uncover the rugby related posts.

Fair play CC you've done a great job

Re: Publishing IP information
06 May, 2012 09:32
What an absolute waste of the moderating talent that is CC. I hope he will reconsider.

Perhaps moderation in the wider sense would help a lot on here - self moderation, cutting out the personal insults (which needn't be at the expense of critical comment) and using the private message system first to check specific issues - like this one. Wouldn't that have been more effective, instead of claiming you know how others are thinking and just winding everyone up in the process!!

The structure of human society demands that human beings suppress natural animal instincts.
Otherwise there would only remain total anarchy and breakdown.

Surely it is not beyond the realms of understanding that in order to exist on this site we must all do this too.
Selfish, ego-driven diatribe is anathema to this process which can only be controlled by self-restraint and respect.
Otherwise we may as well all go back to the jungle.

Oh, and thanks to Glen and all the other people who work so hard on our behalf, without whom any of this would not be possible.

I'd just like to add my voice to the "Keep CC as a moderator" campaign. It's hard enough giving up time to write a match report each week, let alone a more or less constant vigil to maintain a sense of reasonableness. We should be grateful to all of the those who work in the background to keep this site going.

As for the personal attacks/criticisms that seem to be all-pervading recently, I believe that is a symptom of the boredom we've all felt with the on-pitch fare. When the team picks up their game, the line of conversation will become more about the team and their performances, than each other.

There are always those that choose to turn it personal, but sadly you get that in every walk of life, and the ERE virtual pub is no different. Let's not let a few rotten ones ruin what Glen, CC, Hasta, Susanne, Stuart (and any others I've missed) have worked so hard to keep going.
