Love your points stats v Bris. Which decade are they from?

(and yes I do realise they are the Irish results from last year)

I know it is too early for this to mean anything but I can't help but be impressed that we are now 4 points ahead of our benchmark 2014/15 season. I suspect this is largely down to Saints having a rather lacklustre start to their season rather than a significantly better Bath performance. The real test will come when we face the likes of Sarries and Tigers. Still we are at the top now and that has got to be good for the teams confidence.

The measure may be thought bold, but I am of the opinion the boldest are the safest.

Dunno, I think we look much more cohesive than last year. Players look like they know their role, who each other is, and trust that they can do their job.
We actually look like a team this year, not just a bunch of individuals

I would have agreed with that up until the first half display against Worcester. If we play like that against a top side we will get a tonking. Leicester have been slow starters so hope they don't start to click against us. Our lack of personnel makes us vulnerable despite the 3 wins.

Looks to me like we are doing better this season than last season with a weaker squad.

That can't be bad.

Updated. We are now +8 on last year, but also +8 on the year before, where we ended up in the final, and +2 on the year before that when we missed the ployoffs by a whisker.

So far so..

All money and travel issues aside, this (very interesting table) shows why it is such a points gamble having the Twickers 'Clash'. 2 points away at Tigers in 4 seasons, 14 points at the Rec in 3.

It is the cumulative against season 2014 / 15 that I am comparing against (i.e. what I hope that we are aspiring to).

Interesting that over the first 8 games, our 2015/6 performance was the same as 2014/5. So are we +8 on 2014/5, i.e. brilliant, or +8 on 2015/6, i.e. just OK? Games 9-11 may tell us.

If we get just 2 bonus points from the next 3 matches we will be 7 points ahead of last year but equal with 2014/15 which is pretty amazing. If we can conjure up a win against Quins we will be well placed whatever happens in the next 2 games.

We didn't so now we have to conjure up a win against Sarries which is even harder. I didn't really anticipate such an easy time for Exeter at Sale.

Sherry and Campari in the same glass......mmmmmmmh not so sure about that!

Seriously I think we will end up with a points score very close to 2014/15 but still might end up in third with an away game against Sarries or Wasps.

I think we'll end up top four, unless a couple of teams really step up, but fall short in the play offs.

So I'm already running about next season a little, kick on or difficult second season? Part of me feels, whatever we did this season, it will always be building to something (or not).

Couple of things to note.

Only one game all season when we didn't get a point.

last six games are on a par with the same matches last year - which is not a good thing.

Given that they are during the 6N period and that Bristol at home are no pushover particularly when we are down lots of Internationals I am not quite so confident. All are winnable (obviously) but I would be pleasantly surprised if we pick up 12 points from the 3 games.

Re: Comparative Performance
09 January, 2017 13:56
In recent years, 67pts would get you a playoff spot in all bar one year (when we tied with quins on 67 and lost out on PD), and some years 60 would be enough. So we need 29 more.

With a few bonus points, that probably means 6 wins from 9 will pretty much guarantee it, and we'd have a fighting chance with 5.

We play Bris, Wuss and Sale which should be three of them on current form. We can probably write off Sarries A.

So we need to win 2 or 3 from

Glaws H
Wasps H
Saints H
Quins H
Leicester H/A

Let's hope giving away home advantage to Leicester doesn't end up being crucial.

Back ahead of where we were in the season we made the final.

And one good thumping of Quins away from matching last seasons total with seven to play!

One point from the next seven game needed to match last year.

To match the year we came second, we just have to win all of our last 7!

Well to be accurate we'd have to get 28pts in 7 games, So 6 wins and a few bonus points would do. Which is possible. Sale away just got to look harder, but by then they most likely won't have much to play for.

I think good news in matching 15/16 may be accentuating the positive in the extreme, Stuart ! Reaching 60 now will be something of a miracle given the recent run of "form" (although I recently managed it LOL)

Leicester 0
Worcester 1
Gloucester 4
Sale 1

Would be my offer of points probability between now and season's end.

So a 59pt season this year, a modest improvement on last season's 48pt but a big difference in league position. It still feels like a season that got away from us, away form v the bottom clubs the reason we are not in the play offs - time to head to Edinburgh and enjoy the EPRC finals...

11 points up on 48 points is a 23% increase - I reckon that is far better than modest improvement

But another 23% improvement will only see us safely into 4th position - shows just how far we have to go to really challenge for the final

Re: Comparative Performance

There are 5 league games (Ex H, Newc, Bris, Worcs, Sale, A) plus the Stade Semi, where 'should've won' is an almost universal reaction. 6 games lost by a combined total of 19pts, As we got an LBP in all those games, that's equivalent to +15 which would have put us on 74pts, still only 4th albeit comfortably.
The optimist in me says we were only a sliver away from a decent season (4th + a Euro final).
The pessimist wonders whether we can really step on from that and challenge the top 3 in England and the top 8 in Europe.

I can't help thinking that, in retrospect, the 2 weeks banned handed out to Kahn and FLouw when we needed them the most was the turning point of the season.

I can't help thinking that with their cooler heads, and quite frankly, being better players than their replacements, we would have won at Bristol; and kept more control against Wasps, not necessarily enough to win, but to keep the loss respectable.

I think that those 2 performances led to a significant drop in confidence and performance which (probably) wouldn't have happened if those 2 harsh bans hadn't been handed out - let alone a probably 3-5 extra points for the table.
